The reliable sequence is: reproduce the problem with a minimal HTML file, verify the @font-face family and URL, confirm local-file permissions, install and configure the expected fonts with fontconfig and freetype2, then compare the exact binary and host between environments.
How wkhtmltoimage chooses a font
wkhtmltoimage renders HTML through Qt WebKit. The project describes wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage as open-source LGPLv3 command-line tools that use the Qt WebKit rendering engine (project overview). WebKit first matches the CSS family name, then attempts to load the declared font resource, and finally asks the operating system’s font stack for a usable face and glyph coverage. A failure at any stage can look like a CSS problem.
The official download guidance specifically calls out fontconfig and freetype2 as runtime dependencies. A copied binary therefore does not guarantee identical output on every host. Packaged deployment examples also use FONTCONFIG_PATH to point the process at its font configuration directory.
Use a minimal reproduction before changing production HTML
- Create a small test page. Include one
@font-face, a heading, regular and bold samples, punctuation, and the non-ASCII characters that fail in production. - Keep inputs constant. Use the same HTML file, output format, viewport, DPI, and wkhtmltoimage binary for every comparison.
- Render a baseline. For a local file, run:
wkhtmltoimage --enable-local-file-access --format png font-test.html font-test.png - Record the environment. Save the operating system, architecture, exact binary/build, installed font files, fontconfig directories, and relevant environment variables.
A minimal page separates font loading from unrelated JavaScript, layout, lazy content, and application styles. Once it works, add production features back one at a time.

Verify the CSS family and font resource
Match the family name, not the filename
The value in font-family must match the family declared inside the font. A file named AcmeSans-Regular.woff2 may declare a family such as Acme Sans; use the internal family name in both @font-face and the element style.
@font-face {
font-family: "Acme Sans";
src: url("fonts/acme-sans-regular.woff") format("woff");
font-weight: 400;
font-style: normal;
}
body {
font-family: "Acme Sans", sans-serif;
}
Declare each weight and style you actually use. If only a regular face is declared while CSS requests 700, WebKit may synthesize bold or select a fallback.
Check that the URL resolves from the renderer
Open the font URL from the same machine, user account, container, and working directory that runs wkhtmltoimage. Relative URLs are resolved from the HTML document’s location, not necessarily from your shell’s current directory. For a file:// document, permit local resources explicitly:
wkhtmltoimage --enable-local-file-access --format png /absolute/path/font-test.html /absolute/path/font-test.png
Use an absolute URL for a hosted font only when the renderer can reach that host and its certificate, redirects, authentication, and response headers work in that environment. A browser session on your laptop is not proof that a headless process in a container can fetch the same resource.

Test formats and character coverage
The available support varies by build and operating system; there is no complete cross-version matrix. Test the exact font files you plan to deploy. A font can load successfully yet lack a particular script, symbol, emoji, or mathematical character, causing per-glyph fallback. Include representative characters in the minimal page and inspect the result rather than assuming one family covers every string.
Install and configure the runtime fonts
Make the files visible to the process
Install the font files in a directory available inside the runtime (for example, a container image), then refresh the host’s fontconfig cache using the operating system’s normal font installation procedure. Confirm that the same user running wkhtmltoimage can read the files and configuration. Do not rely on fonts installed only in an interactive desktop session when the capture runs as a service account.
Set FONTCONFIG_PATH deliberately
If your deployment keeps a private fontconfig directory, export its path before invoking the renderer:
export FONTCONFIG_PATH=/opt/app/fonts/fontconfig
wkhtmltoimage --enable-local-file-access font-test.html font-test.png
The directory must contain a valid fontconfig setup and be present in the process’s filesystem namespace. Log the variable and directory listing at startup so a container or worker cannot silently fall back to a different host configuration.

Check freetype2 and native libraries
Because the official project names freetype2 as a runtime dependency, verify that the library is installed for the architecture of the wkhtmltoimage binary. A missing or incompatible native library can produce startup errors, blank output, or fallback behavior before CSS is relevant. Compare library versions between a working machine and a failing deployment rather than copying only the executable.
Compare two environments systematically
| Diagnostic axis | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Binary | Exact wkhtmltoimage version, build, and architecture | Nominally identical versions can be packaged with different patches or libraries. |
| Operating system | Distribution, release, architecture, and service user | Font discovery and native dependencies are host-dependent. |
| Font files | Names, checksums, permissions, weights, styles, and coverage | A missing or unreadable face triggers fallback. |
| Fontconfig | Configuration directories, cache state, and FONTCONFIG_PATH |
Discovery order and aliases can differ. |
| CSS and URLs | Family spelling, @font-face declarations, URL scheme, and redirects |
The renderer may never receive the intended resource. |
| Capture inputs | Identical HTML, encoding, options, and output format | Changing inputs can disguise the actual cause. |
Run the same minimal file with the same binary in local and deployment environments. If the outputs differ, compare these axes before rewriting the page.
Use wkhtmltoimage settings to isolate input problems
Encoding
Set the default encoding when the source does not declare one correctly:
wkhtmltoimage --encoding utf-8 --enable-local-file-access font-test.html font-test.png
The documented setting is named web.defaultEncoding. Encoding errors can turn text into replacement characters, which may be mistaken for missing font glyphs.

User stylesheet
Supply a controlled stylesheet with the documented web.userStyleSheet setting (the command-line option is commonly exposed as --user-style-sheet) to force a known family, size, or fallback while diagnosing. Keep this stylesheet minimal and remove it after identifying the cause.
Loading controls
Use the documented load controls to test whether external CSS or fonts arrive before capture. A deterministic local reproduction is preferable; once it succeeds, test network loading, redirects, and timing separately.
Do not use intelligent shrinking as a font fix
The reference states that web.enableIntelligentShrinking has no effect for wkhtmltoimage. Changing it will not repair font selection or loading. Focus on encoding, stylesheet, resource access, and the runtime font stack instead.
Fallback, platform differences, and an anecdotal workaround
Issue reports include “Font-face not render correctly with different platform” and “Fallback fonts don’t seem to work correctly.” These reports establish that cross-platform and fallback problems occur, but they do not identify one universal root cause. Treat them as prompts to compare binaries, hosts, fonts, and configuration.

One issue commenter reported that adding a dummy element using the fallback font appeared to trigger correct rendering in that person’s setup. The mechanism is unexplained and the technique is not an official fix. If you test it, do so only in the minimal reproduction and keep it out of production unless you can prove it is stable across your supported environments.
Version and support expectations
The official downloads page describes 0.12.6 as the stable series released June 11, 2020. That is the page’s dated statement, not confirmation of the current 2026 release status. Record the exact build you deploy and verify behavior with that binary. The project’s status discussion describes maintenance challenges around Qt and WebKit, so persistent compatibility issues may require evaluating whether the aging rendering stack fits your support requirements.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Everything falls back: confirm the family spelling, font URL, local-file access, readable files, fontconfig path, and freetype2 libraries.
- Only bold or italic falls back: declare the requested weight/style explicitly and verify those specific font files exist.
- Latin works but other characters do not: test glyph coverage and add an intentional fallback family for the missing script.
- Local works, container fails: compare the exact binary, service user, mounted font directory, fontconfig configuration, native libraries, and environment variables.
- Hosted fonts fail: test DNS, TLS, redirects, authentication, response content, and capture timing from the renderer’s network context.
- Text is garbled rather than substituted: set the correct encoding and ensure the HTML declares it.
- Output changes between runs: freeze HTML, CSS, fonts, options, viewport, and binary; then investigate external resources and timing.
- Need a suspected font workaround: reproduce it in a tiny page first; anecdotal issue comments are not validation.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a dependable website image rather than maintaining a Qt WebKit font environment, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF:

Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing a newer font file guarantee identical output?
No. The wkhtmltoimage build, operating system, fontconfig configuration, native libraries, CSS URL resolution, and character coverage can all change the result.
Should I switch to web fonts or local fonts for reliability?
Neither is universally reliable. Use the source that your exact runtime can access consistently, then verify it with a minimal page in every deployment environment.
Is wkhtmltoimage’s intelligent shrinking related to font fallback?
No. The documented reference says that setting has no effect for wkhtmltoimage.
