One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShort answer: Prince is a paged-media renderer, not a browser viewport. overflow: hidden clips painting outside an element’s box, but a fixed-height or oversized in-flow element can still influence pagination, page-fit calculations, and the position of following content. Make the intended behavior explicit: use a deliberate clipping height for a crop window, allow text containers to fragment when text must continue, and take oversized images out of normal flow inside a positioned wrapper when necessary.
First reduce the document to a small reproduction, record the Prince version and target page size, then identify whether the symptom is visible overflow, selectable hidden text, an unexpected page, or content pushed downward. Each symptom can have a different cause.
What Prince does differently from a browser
A browser lays out a continuous, interactive viewport. Prince lays out finite pages and must decide where every box fits. Those jobs make clipping and pagination separate concerns.
Prince’s help documentation states that content in an element with a fixed height or overflow: hidden cannot be split over several pages. That prevents fragmentation of the box; it does not promise that every descendant’s intrinsic size is ignored during page layout. A hidden descendant can therefore remain selectable, contribute to a page-fit calculation, create an apparently blank extra page, or push later normal-flow content even though its pixels are clipped.

Identify the actual failure
- Painted overflow: the child is visible outside the parent’s bounds.
- Hidden but selectable text: the text is clipped visually but remains in the PDF’s text layer.
- Unexpected page break: a card or image causes a new page although only part of it is visible.
- Blank-looking page: a non-fragmentable box or oversized child occupies page space without obvious paint.
- Later content moves down: an in-flow box still has a large used height.
Do not treat these as one bug. Start with a minimal HTML file containing only the parent, the child, the page declaration, and the relevant margins. Record the exact Prince release and page dimensions; forum fixes from older releases are case-specific, not guarantees for every current build.
Use a real clipping window
If the design intentionally shows only a portion of content, define the window’s dimensions rather than relying on an implicit height.
@page {
size: A4;
margin: 18mm;
}
.crop {
width: 160mm;
height: 42mm;
overflow: hidden;
position: relative;
}
.crop__content {
margin: 0;
}
The explicit height establishes the crop boundary. position: relative gives descendants a predictable containing block if you later need to position one. Verify the generated PDF: confirm the crop is the expected size, that nearby content does not overlap, and that the following block begins where you expect.
When positioning helps—and when it hurts
Prince staff have suggested adding absolute positioning to a clipping parent in some fixed-window cases. Positioning can keep a large descendant from determining normal-flow height, but it also removes that descendant from normal flow. The box may overlay neighboring content or anchor to an unexpected containing block. Use it only after checking the containing block, offsets, and overlap in the actual PDF.
.crop {
position: relative;
height: 42mm;
overflow: hidden;
}
.crop__content {
position: absolute;
inset: 0 auto auto 0;
width: 100%;
}
Let long text fragment when it should continue
A fixed-height, hidden container is the wrong model for text that must remain readable across pages. Remove the fixed clipping height and allow the block to take its natural height, or split the content into page-sized sections that can fragment.
.article-text {
/* No fixed height and no overflow clipping. */
overflow: visible;
}
Page-break avoidance cannot make content that is taller than a page fit on that page. If a card must stay together, keep it within a realistic maximum size; if it can be continued, design it as fragmentable content instead of a crop window.

Fix oversized images that still create a page
Images are a common special case. A large image kept in normal flow may be treated as a non-fragmentable box. Prince maintainer guidance describes a situation in which Prince uses the image’s full height for page-fit calculations even when the wrapper clips the excess.
Make the wrapper the positioned clipping window and absolutely position the image inside it:
Recommended Free Tools
.hero-frame {
position: relative;
width: 170mm;
height: 55mm;
overflow: hidden;
}
.hero-frame img {
position: absolute;
top: 0;
left: 0;
width: 170mm;
height: auto;
max-width: none;
}
Set the wrapper’s dimensions deliberately. Test different image aspect ratios, confirm the image is clipped rather than merely scaled, and check that the next block starts immediately after the wrapper. If the image should be fully visible, do the opposite: keep it in flow and constrain its size so its used height can fit.
Prince’s overflow syntax and limitations
Prince supports the single-value overflow property values visible, hidden, clip, scroll, and auto. It does not support separate overflow-x and overflow-y properties, nor the two-value syntax used by browsers. Use one value:
.panel {
overflow: hidden;
}
Do not diagnose a Prince result using a browser rule such as overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: auto;. In Prince, scroll does not create a usable PDF scrollbar; it establishes a new block formatting context and otherwise behaves like visible. Choose the value for the printed result, not for screen interaction.
Choose the layout model that matches the goal
| Goal | Recommended model | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Show only a fixed portion of a card | Explicit width/height, overflow: hidden, usually a positioned wrapper |
Clipped content is not continued onto later pages and may require careful anchoring. |
| Keep all text readable | Natural-height, fragmentable normal-flow block | The block can span pages and will not behave like a fixed crop. |
| Crop an oversized image | Relative wrapper with explicit dimensions; absolutely positioned image | Absolute positioning can overlap nearby content if offsets are wrong. |
| Fit wide content | Design for the target paper; use relative units, rotation, or Prince’s shrink-to-fit facility only when appropriate | Shrink-to-fit can reduce readability and is not a substitute for page-aware design. |
Page size, height limits, and wide content
Design against the actual paper size and margins. Prince documentation recommends relative size units rather than routinely relying on shrink-to-fit. For content that is too tall, limit max-height or redesign the component so it can fragment. For content that is too wide, consider rotating it or using -prince-shrink-to-fit after testing legibility. Prince’s --css-dpi option changes CSS pixel DPI; its default is 96 dpi. A DPI change can alter measured dimensions, so keep it consistent between debugging and production.

A repeatable debugging procedure
- Create a minimal HTML reproduction with one suspect element.
- Record the Prince version, page size, margins, and any
--css-dpisetting. - Remove fixed heights and
overflowtemporarily. If the page break disappears, the clipping model is involved. - Add an explicit parent height and
overflow: hidden. Inspect the PDF for clipping, selectable text, and the next block’s position. - For an image, switch the wrapper to
position: relativeand the image toposition: absolute; verify offsets and overlap. - For text that must continue, restore natural height and test a page boundary inside the content.
- Change one variable at a time and compare PDFs at the same paper size.
Common errors and fixes
“The hidden text still selects”
Clipping controls painting, not necessarily the PDF text layer. If the text must not exist in the output at all, remove it from the generated HTML or conditionally generate a shorter version; do not rely on visual clipping as a redaction method.
“The image is clipped but still creates a new page”
The image is probably still an in-flow, non-fragmentable box. Use the positioned-wrapper pattern above, then check the wrapper’s used height and page placement.
“The next section is pushed down”
An in-flow parent or child still has a large used height. Remove unnecessary fixed dimensions, or take the intentionally cropped child out of flow and reserve only the wrapper’s required height.
“Absolute positioning fixes the break but causes overlap”
The element no longer reserves normal-flow space. Establish the correct containing block with position: relative, set explicit offsets, and add a wrapper whose height reserves the visual space.
“A browser preview works but the PDF does not”
That is expected when browser viewport assumptions are transferred to paged media. Reproduce in Prince at the production page size and test the generated PDF, not only a screen preview.
“Page-break avoidance did not help”
A page-break rule cannot make a box taller than the available page fit. Reduce the box, permit fragmentation, or redesign the component.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does overflow: clip solve Prince pagination problems?
It changes clipping semantics, but it does not turn a too-tall box into fragmentable content. Test the complete layout at the target page size.
Can CSS hide content from PDF extraction?
No. Visual clipping is not a reliable redaction method; omit sensitive content from the generated HTML.
Should I use absolute positioning for every cropped element?
No. Reserve it for cases where normal-flow sizing causes a break, especially oversized images, and verify anchoring and overlap.
The Bottom Line
In Prince, overflow: hidden controls what is painted, while pagination still has to place the element and its non-fragmentable descendants. Use explicit clipping dimensions for intentional crops, natural-height flow for continuing text, and a positioned wrapper for oversized images that distort page-fit calculations. Always validate the reduced example with the exact Prince version and paper size you deploy.
