To fix a Gmail connection problem, first find out where it occurs: check whether other websites work, try Gmail on another device or network, and see whether the issue is limited to a browser, the Gmail app, or a mail client such as Outlook. Check Google’s status dashboard before changing account settings. Then follow the steps for the affected device or symptom below.

Identify what is failing before changing settings

“Gmail connection issue” can mean a blank or endlessly loading page, a “No connection” message, an inbox that will not refresh, missing notifications, messages stuck in Outbox, or a desktop client that repeatedly asks for a password. These symptoms have different causes. Use the checks below to locate the problem first.

  1. Open another website. If that also fails, troubleshoot the internet connection before Gmail.
  2. Try Gmail in another browser or a private/incognito window.
  3. Try Gmail on another device and, if possible, another network. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  4. If the app fails, open mail.google.com in a browser. If a desktop client fails, test Gmail in the browser too.
  5. Check whether the problem affects one Google Account or more than one.
What you find Most likely area to investigate
Other websites fail too Internet, router, cellular connection, VPN, proxy, or network sign-in
Gmail fails only in one browser Browser version, extension, site data, or profile setting
Gmail fails only in the app App or account sync, device settings, storage, or authentication
Gmail works in a browser but not a mail client Client authentication, software version, or client settings
Gmail fails on several devices and networks Possible service disruption or account-specific issue
Gmail opens, but sending or receiving fails Storage, sync, delivery, authentication, or recipient-side issue

Check whether Gmail is experiencing a service disruption

Before clearing data or removing an account, check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for Gmail incidents. If Google lists an active incident, wait for its updates; changing local settings is unlikely to help. The dashboard focuses on Workspace services, so no listed incident does not rule out a problem affecting a particular consumer account or local connection. Google recommends checking service status for temporary and internal errors in its guidance on common Gmail error messages.

Fix Gmail when it will not load in a browser

Update the browser and compare

Update your browser, then try Gmail in another current browser. Google recommends using an up-to-date browser and trying another one when Gmail does not work correctly; see its browser-version guidance. If another browser works, focus on the original browser rather than the account.

Use private browsing to isolate extensions and site data

Open Gmail in a private or incognito window. If it works there, an extension, cookie, cached site file, or browser-profile setting may be interfering. Private browsing is a test, not necessarily a permanent fix: extension behavior and saved sessions can differ from a normal window.

Temporarily turn off extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy or tracking tools, script blockers, security add-ons, password managers, and work or school filtering extensions. Reopen Gmail after each change. If that restores access, turn extensions back on one at a time to identify the conflict. Google also recommends testing extensions individually in its Gmail loading troubleshooting.

Clear Gmail site data if other browser checks fail

Clear cookies and cached data for Gmail or Google rather than wiping all browser data as a first step. You may be signed out and need to sign in again, including completing two-step verification. Clearing data can also remove remembered sessions, preferences, or offline web data. Google recommends clearing cache and cookies for errors such as “Oops” and “Bad Request” in its error-message guide.

Check Gmail settings and network filters

If the browser still fails, temporarily turn off Gmail features under Settings → See all settings → Advanced, save, and reload. Also check whether the browser deletes Google site data when it closes. Test without a VPN or proxy, and consider whether a work, school, hotel, or public network filters Google services. Re-enable any security or privacy tools you temporarily disabled once you have identified the cause.

Fix “No connection” and network-specific problems

  1. Confirm that another website loads.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi or mobile data off and back on, then reopen Gmail.
  3. Restart the device. If only Wi-Fi is affected, restart the router too.
  4. Switch networks, such as from Wi-Fi to cellular data, if available.
  5. Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy. Restore it afterward if it is required for work or privacy.
  6. On public Wi-Fi, open a browser and complete the network’s sign-in or terms page.
  7. If other services also fail, contact the internet provider or the network administrator.

Google’s steps for a “No connection” message include checking internet access, restarting, toggling the connection, trying another network, reopening Gmail, and signing in again; see its common error guidance and Gmail loading guidance. A device can show that it is connected to Wi-Fi while a captive portal still blocks internet access. Work or school networks may also restrict Google services or mail-client traffic.

If a secure-connection error appears on a mobile device, check that the device’s date and time are correct. For cellular sync delays, check whether background data or data-saver settings restrict the app. These are possible causes, not universal explanations for Gmail failures.

Fix Gmail app sync problems

Android

  1. Open a website to confirm internet access, then pull down on the Gmail inbox to refresh.
  2. Allow time for sync. Google says it can take up to 15 minutes and may take longer if the device has been unused for some time.
  3. Update Gmail through the device’s app store and restart the device.
  4. In Gmail, open Menu → Settings → select the account → Data usage → Sync Gmail and make sure sync is enabled.
  5. Check Android’s account-sync settings and run Sync now if available.
  6. Check Google Account storage and available device storage. Google Account storage is shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos; when it is full, Gmail may be unable to send or receive messages, and incoming messages can be returned to the sender. Delete unneeded large mail and attachments, then empty Trash and Spam; review Drive and Photos as well.
  7. Force-stop and reopen Gmail. If the problem persists, clearing Gmail storage/data is a last resort, not an early step.

Google’s full Android Gmail sync troubleshooting covers manual sync, updates, account and device sync, storage, and app data. Clearing app data can remove local drafts, signatures, ringtone choices, and other app settings. Save important drafts and make sure you can sign back in before doing it.

iPhone and iPad

Confirm Wi-Fi or cellular access, close and reopen Gmail, update it in the App Store, and restart the device. Test the account at mail.google.com in a browser. If web access works but the app does not, focus on the app or device. Remove and re-add the Google Account only after confirming that you know the sign-in details and can complete any required verification. Menu labels can differ by iOS version and device-management policy; Android paths do not apply to iOS.

Diagnose sending, receiving, and missing notifications

Gmail opens but a message will not send

  • Check Drafts and Outbox for a message that has not left the device.
  • Confirm the connection is stable, especially if an attachment is still uploading.
  • Check account storage if sending and receiving are both affected.
  • If sending from Outlook or Apple Mail fails, try sending from Gmail in a browser or the Gmail app.
  • Read any authentication, delivery, or SMTP error rather than treating it as a general internet failure.

Google advises trying Gmail in a browser or app when a message sent from another client is delayed. A slow connection can also delay sending; see Google’s guidance on delayed or missing sent mail. For SMTP status codes, use Google’s SMTP errors and codes reference.

A recipient says the message never arrived

Check Sent Mail and Drafts, confirm the recipient address, and ask the recipient to check Spam or Junk. Wait for a bounce or delivery-error message; if one arrives, preserve its full text and code. If only one address or domain is affected, recipient-side filtering or provider policy may be involved rather than a Gmail connection failure.

New mail is missing or notifications do not arrive

Refresh the inbox and check Gmail sync, device-wide account sync, and account storage. See whether the messages appear in web Gmail. Review filters and forwarding rules, and consider whether another mail client using POP is downloading messages. A missing notification does not prove that mail is missing: device notification permissions, background data, or battery restrictions can prevent alerts while messages are present in the inbox. If senders receive a bounce, use that error to investigate delivery.

Repair Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, and other clients

Start by updating the client and removing and adding the Gmail account again. When offered, choose Sign in with Google and complete Google’s authentication and two-step verification prompts. Google favors this method over giving a third-party app your Google username and password; older clients may not support current security requirements. Do not enable “less secure apps,” disable two-step verification, or repeatedly enter your normal password into an untrusted or outdated client. Google explains current setup options in Add Gmail to another email client.

App passwords are not a universal fix and are generally unnecessary when Sign in with Google is available. If an external provider’s account is added to Gmail, obtain its incoming and outgoing server settings from that provider rather than guessing server names, ports, or encryption options. Gmail’s Android connection-error guidance also directs users with non-Gmail accounts to check provider settings.

“Too many simultaneous connections”

Google says an account can be added to up to 15 email clients at a time. Close clients you do not use, sign out of old devices, remove duplicate account entries, and reduce how many clients repeatedly check the account. Then reconnect only the clients you need using Google sign-in.

IMAP folders are too large for the client

If a mail client is slow or crashes while downloading mail, open Gmail on a computer and go to Settings → See all settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Under IMAP access, limit folders to a maximum of 10,000 messages, then save. Google documents this folder-size option in its third-party client setup guidance. A Workspace administrator may control whether the relevant setting is available. For personal Gmail, Google says the Enable/Disable IMAP option has not been available since January 2025 because IMAP access is always enabled.

Google’s announced changes to third-party accounts in Gmail web

As of September 24, 2026, Google’s announced timeline says notices and transition activity begin in Q3 2026; existing “Send as,” Gmailify, and POP configurations continue during the Q3–Q4 2026 transition, though Google may restrict new configurations. Google plans to remove “Send as” for third-party accounts, Gmailify, and POP in January 2027. These changes concern Gmail’s web handling of third-party email accounts, not ordinary sign-in to a Gmail account in a separate desktop client. Google points users toward the provider’s own app or website, a desktop client using IMAP/SMTP, or the Gmail mobile app. See Google’s announcement on third-party email account support.

Resolve specific Gmail error messages

“There was a problem securing the connection”

On Android, check the device’s date and time and whether public Wi-Fi requires a browser-based sign-in. If the affected account is from another email provider, verify its incoming and outgoing settings with that provider. In Gmail, open Menu → Settings → select the account → Server settings to review the configuration; do not guess values. Google lists these possible causes in its Android Gmail error guidance.

“Too many refreshes”

Google says this can happen when an account is synchronized more often than its provider allows, particularly for non-Gmail accounts added to the Gmail app. On Android, open Gmail → Menu → Settings → select the account → Data usage → Days of mail to sync, choose a longer period, and tap OK. See Google’s error instructions.

“Temporary Error (502)” or “Internal error”

A 502 can indicate Gmail is temporarily unavailable. Wait a few minutes, check the status dashboard, and try again. For an internal error, confirm internet access, close and reopen Gmail, and force-stop the Android app if needed. Google says messages and personal information remain safe during a temporary 502; see its common error guidance and Android error guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Oops” or “Bad Request”

Try a private window, disable extensions, clear Gmail site data, and temporarily turn off Gmail Advanced features under Settings → See all settings → Advanced. Reload after each change so you can identify which one helped. Google describes these browser-focused steps in its error-message troubleshooting.

Use Gmail Offline only as a browser-based workaround

Gmail Offline can let you read, search, and reply to mail without a live connection, but it does not repair a service outage or an account-authentication problem. It works in a Chrome browser window, not Incognito; Chrome must remain open for synchronization, and offline-sent messages stay in Outbox until a connection returns. Offline access is tied to the account used during setup and uses browser-allocated storage.

If offline mail will not sync, store fewer days of mail, turn off attachment downloads, check available drive and browser storage, avoid Guest or Incognito sessions, and make sure Chrome does not delete Google site data on exit. See Google’s Gmail Offline setup and troubleshooting.

When to treat a connection problem as an account-security issue

If an unfamiliar device or client repeatedly requests authentication, review access rather than assuming the network is at fault. In Gmail on the web, the Details link at the lower right can show recent access information, including browser, device, mail server, IP address, and approximate location. An unfamiliar location alone does not prove compromise: carriers, VPNs, corporate networks, and mail-fetching services can affect it. Google explains the access information in Last account activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you find access you cannot explain, change your Google Account password, review recent security events, remove unfamiliar third-party access, confirm recovery details, and reconnect trusted clients with Sign in with Google. Do not give your password to anyone claiming to be Gmail support.
