If Cypress is installed in your project but will not launch, the most useful first step is to identify which part is missing: the npm package, the Cypress binary, a cached binary, or an operating-system dependency. These are separate layers, so reinstalling the package alone may not fix a binary-download or Linux-library problem. Use the checks below to isolate the failure before clearing caches or changing permissions.

The commands and version-specific guidance below reflect Cypress documentation accessed September 29, 2026. Check the linked live documentation before changing a package-manager or operating-system configuration, since defaults and supported versions can change.

How Cypress installation is split up

A working Cypress setup has more than one component:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Project package: The JavaScript cypress package installed through npm, Yarn, pnpm, or Bun.
  • Platform binary: The Cypress application downloaded by the package’s install lifecycle script and stored in a global cache.
  • Application data: Cypress state stored separately from the project package and binary cache.
  • Host prerequisites: Operating-system libraries and other requirements needed to launch the binary.

A package-manager command can succeed while the install script is blocked, leaving the package present but the binary absent. Likewise, a present binary may still fail to launch if the cache is damaged or the host lacks a required library. Cypress’s installation guide and troubleshooting guide describe these distinct layers.

Why is Cypress not installing? Check compatibility first

Before changing your install, compare the operating system and release, CPU architecture, Node.js version, and package-manager version with Cypress’s current system requirements and installation instructions. The live page accessed September 29, 2026 lists macOS 13.5 or later, Windows 10/11 x64, and specific supported Linux distributions and releases; it also gives package-manager minimums. Do not infer that every Linux distribution, Windows architecture, or older system is supported.

Package-manager lifecycle defaults are version-sensitive. On the same checked date, Cypress’s guide says npm 11.16.0 warns about lifecycle scripts and npm 12.0.0 blocks them by default; Yarn Modern 4.14.0 sets enableScripts to false by default. Use the current Cypress instructions for your exact manager and version instead of copying a setting intended for another tool.

Why does Cypress say the binary could not be found?

This usually means the project package is available but its binary was not downloaded or cannot be found in the expected cache. Cypress documents this distinction in its error messages. First check whether lifecycle scripts were allowed during installation. Then explicitly run the binary installer using your package manager’s command.

npm

Follow Cypress’s current npm guidance to approve Cypress in allowScripts, then rebuild it with npm rebuild cypress, or run the documented explicit install command:

npx cypress install

If your npm version blocks or prompts about lifecycle scripts, resolve that policy using Cypress’s current npm setup instructions; simply rerunning npm install may repeat the same blocked hook.

Yarn Modern

Use Cypress’s current instructions to enable and preapprove the package’s install script. If you use Yarn Plug’n’Play with the default nodeLinker: pnp, note that Cypress Component Testing is not currently compatible with that default configuration. Where appropriate, use the documented node-modules setup. Do not assume the remedy for Yarn Classic applies to Yarn Modern.

pnpm

Follow the current Cypress allow-build instructions for your pnpm version and review Cypress’s warning about pnpm’s side-effects cache. Avoid applying an old global configuration without checking the current install guide.

Bun

If scripts were ignored during installation, use Cypress’s current Bun instructions to trust the package for lifecycle scripts or explicitly install the binary:

bunx cypress install

The npm, Yarn, pnpm, and Bun steps above are not interchangeable. Cypress keeps the manager-specific setup in its installation guide.

Why does cypress install fail behind my firewall or proxy?

A package manager may hide the output from Cypress’s postinstall script. To expose a download, extraction, or network error, Cypress recommends separating package installation from binary installation and enabling CLI debug output. With npm, run:

CYPRESS_INSTALL_BINARY=0 npm install cypress --save-dev
DEBUG=cypress:cli* npx cypress install

Use the equivalent package-manager commands if you do not use npm. Read the debug output to distinguish a blocked download from an unzip failure or another cause. If the machine cannot reach the download endpoint, Cypress’s advanced installation guide covers allowlisting required URLs and configuring an approved binary URL, mirror, proxy, or certificate setup. Network policies vary: do not assume one firewall allowlist or proxy environment-variable recipe fits every organization.

How do I check or repair the Cypress binary cache?

The binary cache is separate from both the project package and Cypress application data. Use the CLI to inspect the cache location and installed versions:

npx cypress cache path
npx cypress cache list

Substitute the appropriate package-manager invocation if needed. If evidence points to a damaged cache, npx cypress cache clear removes all cached Cypress binary versions. You must install the binary again afterward. If you only intend to remove older cached versions, Cypress documents npx cypress cache prune as a narrower option. See the troubleshooting guide and advanced installation guide.

Do not clear application data as a substitute for fixing a missing binary. Application data is stored separately; resetting it is relevant only when the symptoms point to corrupted Cypress app state. Choose the cleanup target that matches the failing layer.

How do I fix Cypress missing dependencies on Linux?

Linux library requirements differ by distribution and release. Check the current Cypress prerequisites for the exact host rather than copying a package list from a different Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, or other release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run the Cypress binary smoke test as described in the current troubleshooting instructions.
  2. Use ldd on the Cypress executable to inspect its shared-library dependencies.
  3. Look for entries marked not found; install the missing library through the operating system’s package manager using the package name for your distribution and release.
  4. Run Cypress again and check whether the launch error has changed.

Cypress’s troubleshooting documentation also describes a sandbox case specific to Ubuntu 24.04. Treat that as an environment-specific issue, not as a general Linux workaround. Cypress Docker images are another option when you need an environment with Cypress prerequisites included; use the official documentation to choose an image appropriate to your workflow.

Why does Cypress work locally but fail in CI?

CI needs both the JavaScript package and the matching Cypress binary. A successful dependency install does not prove that the CI job has restored or downloaded the binary cache. Cypress’s CI documentation recommends caching the Cypress binary cache and your package manager’s own cache intentionally. It cautions that caching node_modules directly can result in the Cypress binary not being downloaded.

  • Confirm the CI package-manager configuration permits Cypress’s install lifecycle script, or explicitly run Cypress’s binary install command.
  • Check that the cache restore step includes the Cypress binary cache and that the cache key is appropriate for the Cypress version and environment.
  • Do not treat a restored node_modules directory as proof that the binary exists.
  • If CI reports missing shared libraries, verify that the runner’s operating system and release meet the current prerequisites.

For cache configuration examples, use the current Cypress CI guide rather than assuming one cache path or key works across all providers.

What if Cypress reports a permissions error?

Check that Node.js is installed and that the user running the package manager has permission to install packages and write to the relevant cache location. Cypress’s FAQ mentions elevated permissions as one possible CI remedy, but using sudo npm install is not a universal fix. Prefer correcting ownership or permissions according to the host’s package-manager setup; mixing elevated and non-elevated installs can create further ownership problems.

A diagnostic order that avoids unnecessary reinstalls

  1. Record the context: OS and release, architecture, Node.js and package-manager versions, local or CI, and the full error text.
  2. Verify support: Compare that context with Cypress’s current requirements page.
  3. Identify the layer: Determine whether the project package is missing, the binary is missing, the cache is damaged, or the binary fails because of host dependencies.
  4. Check lifecycle scripts: Apply the instructions for the exact package manager and version.
  5. Expose hidden install failures: Run the Cypress binary installation separately with DEBUG=cypress:cli*.
  6. Inspect before cleaning: Check cache path and contents; clear or prune only if the evidence indicates a cache issue.
  7. Validate launch prerequisites: On Linux, check distribution-specific dependencies and use ldd when libraries are missing.
  8. For CI, verify both install and cache behavior: Ensure the binary is installed or restored independently of the project package.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a website rather than run Cypress browser tests, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does installing the Cypress npm package also install the Cypress app?

Usually its lifecycle script downloads the app binary, but package-manager script policies can block that step. Check the binary separately with Cypress’s cache commands or explicitly run the install command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I delete the Cypress cache whenever installation fails?

No. Inspect the cache first. Clearing it removes every cached binary version and requires another binary installation; pruning is narrower when only older versions need removal.

Is a missing Cypress binary in CI necessarily a Cypress package-version problem?

No. CI can have the JavaScript package while lacking the binary because the install hook did not run or the binary cache was not restored.
