Claude MCP failures have two different starting points: a local server or desktop extension running on your computer, or a remote custom connector that Anthropic’s infrastructure must reach over the public internet. Identify which one you configured before changing settings. Local fixes center on Claude Desktop, extension fields, credentials, files, permissions and organization policy; remote fixes center on public reachability, connector setup, OAuth and server-side logs.
First decide: local server or remote connector?
Check how the server was added. A local MCP server or desktop extension runs on your machine and is managed through Claude Desktop’s extension and developer settings. A remote MCP server is configured as a custom connector; Claude’s cloud service connects to it, even if you started setup in the desktop app. A server in claude_desktop_config.json follows the local mechanism and should not be debugged as a remote connector.
| What you configured | Where the connection originates | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop extension or local MCP process | Your computer through Claude Desktop | App version, extension settings, credentials, paths, permissions and policy |
| Custom remote MCP connector | Anthropic’s infrastructure | Public DNS/HTTPS reachability, firewall allowlist, connector URL, OAuth and organization approval |
Laptop access alone proves nothing about a remote connector. A VPN-only, private-network or firewall-protected endpoint can work in your browser while remaining unreachable to Claude.

1. Update and restart Claude Desktop
- Install the latest Claude Desktop release available for your operating system.
- Quit the application completely, not merely the window, and start it again.
- Retry the conversation and inspect whether the extension’s tools now appear.
An extension can appear installed while its tools remain unavailable until the app is updated and restarted. This is the first step in Anthropic’s local-server guidance.

2. Recheck extension settings and credentials
Open Settings > Extensions, select the affected extension and review every required field. Confirm endpoint values, account identifiers, API keys and other credentials character-for-character. Remove accidental quotation marks or whitespace introduced by copying. If the service rotated a key, create or paste the current credential and save the settings before reconnecting.
3. Verify local paths and operating-system permissions
If the extension reads a file, launches a local executable or uses a configured directory, verify that the path still exists and points to the intended location. Then confirm both your user account and Claude Desktop can access it. Anthropic specifically calls out macOS security settings and directory permissions on Windows and Linux. A moved project folder, an external drive that is not mounted, or a permission change can therefore look like an MCP protocol failure.
- Use an absolute path rather than a relative one when the extension requires a filesystem location.
- Check that the executable is still installed and has permission to run.
- On macOS, review the relevant privacy/security permission when access to a protected folder is denied.
- On Windows or Linux, inspect directory ownership and read/execute permissions.
4. Check organization and machine controls
An administrator may disable desktop extensions or local developer MCP. Machine-level enterprise controls can override an in-app setting, so a toggle that appears enabled does not guarantee permission to run a server. If you use a managed device or Team/Enterprise workspace, ask the owner or IT administrator whether local MCP and the specific extension are allowed.
5. Confirm the connection and read logs
Click the + button beside the chat box in Claude Desktop and choose Connectors. Anthropic says this view shows connected MCP servers and their tools. You can also open Developer settings under Desktop app to see connection status and server logs.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
When the basic view is not enough, enable debug logging in Claude Desktop settings and inspect the extension logs under Settings > Extensions. Record the timestamp, server name, exact error text and the operation that failed. That information distinguishes a process that never launched from one that launched but rejected authentication or a tool call.
6. Recover from an installation failure
Redownload the extension if its installation package may be corrupted. Confirm that the system has adequate disk space, then reinstall and restart Claude Desktop. Re-enter credentials rather than assuming a damaged installation preserved them correctly.
Fix a remote custom MCP connector
1. Prove public reachability from Anthropic’s side
Your remote MCP server must be reachable over the public internet from Anthropic’s IP ranges. A private corporate address, VPN-only host or firewall rule that permits only your office network will prevent connection. If the endpoint is intentionally restricted, allowlist Anthropic’s current IP addresses using the ranges in Anthropic’s operational documentation, then retest. Do not treat a successful request from your laptop as proof that Claude can reach the service.
2. Check connector setup and authentication
Open Claude’s connector settings and verify the complete remote connector URL. For Team and Enterprise workspaces, an Owner or Primary Owner may need to add the connector at organization level before members can connect. After it is approved, enable it for the conversation in which you need it.

If the connector uses OAuth, complete the Connect or authentication flow and approve only the scopes you expect. Recheck redirect and authorization settings on the server when the flow returns to Claude without a usable connection. The official setup guidance does not define one universal OAuth error-to-fix mapping; use the provider’s logs and documentation for the exact response.
3. Check plan and workspace availability
Anthropic’s August 11, 2026 help article lists custom-connector availability for Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and states that Free permits one custom connector. Plan rules can change, so verify the current account limits in Claude before treating an unavailable connector as a server defect.
4. Inspect server-side and protocol logs
When network access and connector configuration are correct, inspect the MCP server’s request logs. Look for TLS failures, rejected tokens, malformed MCP messages, unexpected HTTP methods and requests arriving from an unrecognized source address. Follow the Model Context Protocol documentation and its debugging guidance rather than guessing from a generic “connection failed” message. The protocol overview is available at modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/2026-07-28/getting-started/intro.
Use Claude’s status views as a decision tree
- No server listed in Connectors: treat this as installation, workspace policy or connector-registration work. For a local extension, return to Settings > Extensions; for a remote service, ask the workspace owner whether it was added.
- Server listed but no tools: update/restart a local app, validate extension fields and inspect logs. For remote servers, verify authentication and server responses.
- Tools listed but calls fail: distinguish permission or credential rejection from a server-side tool error by matching the time with client and server logs.
- Only one conversation fails: check whether the connector is enabled for that conversation.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely boundary | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Extension appears installed, tools absent | Local app or extension | Update, fully restart, review extension settings and debug logs. |
| Path or file access error | Local operating system | Confirm the path exists and grant Claude/user access. |
| Remote URL works only on VPN | Network reachability | Expose it securely on the public internet or configure the required Anthropic IP allowlist. |
| OAuth completes but connector is unusable | Remote authentication | Verify URL, OAuth configuration, scopes and provider logs. |
| Managed device blocks local MCP | Enterprise policy | Ask the administrator to review organization and machine-level controls. |
Security checks before reconnecting
MCP servers can read external data and, depending on their tools and granted permissions, modify it. Connect only to servers you trust, review OAuth scopes carefully and watch what each tool does. Do not weaken firewall, operating-system or organization controls unless you understand the specific access they provide and have an approved reason.

When to escalate
Escalate with a compact evidence bundle: local or remote classification, Claude Desktop version, operating system, connector or extension name, exact URL or configured path, timestamp, connection status, client log excerpt, server log excerpt and whether the endpoint is reachable without a VPN. Official guidance does not establish one universal cause or failure-rate statistic, so a reliable diagnosis depends on these incident-specific details.
