“Chrome not reachable” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can mean Chrome failed to start, exited unexpectedly, or started successfully and then lost its connection to ChromeDriver. To find the cause after a relaunch, capture the full exception and logs, record the exact browser and driver versions and launch arguments, then test one configuration change at a time. The right fix depends on when the failure occurs and how Chrome was launched.
What “ChromeDriver not reachable after relaunch” means
ChromeDriver controls Chrome through a browser session. An error containing “chrome not reachable” tells you that the driver could not communicate with Chrome at that point; it does not tell you why. The surrounding exception may indicate that Chrome failed to start, exited, or became unreachable after it had been running. Similar wording has appeared in reports involving different versions and launch configurations, so the phrase alone cannot identify a universal fix. Selenium issue discussion and an individual version-change report illustrate different contexts.
First establish which event you are debugging: failure while creating a session, failure immediately after Chrome opens, or failure only after a working browser is closed and relaunched. A “session not created” exception during startup is a different diagnostic clue from a disconnect after a successful session.
Capture the evidence before changing settings
Record these details from the failing run. Without them, it is easy to apply a workaround for someone else’s configuration or to mistake a browser crash for a network problem.

- How Chrome and ChromeDriver were installed, the Chrome binary path, and whether the failure began after an update, downgrade or machine change.
- Every Chrome argument, including remote-debugging and profile or data-directory settings.
- ChromeDriver logs and, if available, evidence of whether the Chrome process remained alive when the error appeared.
- Whether this was the first session, a relaunch within the same test, or one of several parallel automation sessions.
Keep logs from both a failing and a successful run if you have them. Redact credentials, cookies and other sensitive values before sharing them.
Work through the likely failure paths
1. Determine whether Chrome failed to start or disconnected later
Check the ChromeDriver log and operating-system process information around the failure. If Chrome exits during session creation, investigate its startup output and launch configuration first. The error text does not, by itself, prove that a WebDriver port, network connection or firewall is the cause. If Chrome remains running but the session becomes unreachable after a relaunch, focus on what the relaunch changes: process lifetime, profile or data directory, debugging arguments, and concurrent sessions.
Record whether Chrome opened visibly, whether a new window appeared, and whether the failure occurs at the same point every time. Those observations narrow the problem without changing the environment.

2. Check browser, driver and Selenium versions together
Compare the exact versions from the failing environment, rather than assuming that “latest” or a remembered version is installed. Check the current official Chrome for Testing and ChromeDriver information and the Selenium documentation for the supported selection and setup guidance that applies to your installation. The available issue reports do not establish a universal compatibility matrix or a single version pair that fixes every case.
If the problem began after a browser or driver update, preserve that timeline. One user described an error after Chrome changed from version 137 to 141 and was then returned to 137; that is an individual report, not evidence that downgrading generally causes the error or that downgrading is a fix. Change only the browser-driver setup you are testing, then compare the logs.
3. If remote debugging is enabled on Chrome 136 or later, test the data directory
A Selenium issue discussion about Chrome 136 describes changed handling of remote-debugging switches when they target Chrome’s default data directory and points to using a non-standard user-data directory. Treat this as a version-specific lead, not as a confirmed explanation for every “not reachable” error. The discussion reproduces wording attributed to a Chrome change, but the available evidence does not expose an official source page to verify that wording independently. If your launch configuration includes remote debugging, run a controlled test with a fresh, dedicated, non-default data directory. Do not point automation at your everyday Chrome data directory or delete it. Remove or alter manual remote-debugging arguments only as a separate test, so you can tell which change affected the outcome.

4. Separate profile problems from profile-path mistakes
Chrome’s user-data directory is the data root; a profile such as “Default” is a subdirectory within it. Confusing the two can lead to testing the wrong path. Avoid having concurrent automation runs share the same Chrome data directory, and test with one session and one fresh temporary directory first.
A profile-related report dates to 2018, so it is useful only as a prompt to inspect how a path is configured—not as current authoritative guidance for Chrome’s profile syntax. Reintroduce any custom profile configuration only after the isolated run works.

5. Reintroduce complexity one setting at a time
Start with one browser session, a dedicated temporary data directory, and a browser-driver setup checked against current official documentation. Establish whether the failure occurs during session creation or after a successful start and relaunch. Then add back custom profile settings, remote-debugging options, parallel sessions and other launch arguments individually. Keep the logs for each run so the change that correlates with the failure is identifiable.

This sequence is diagnostic guidance, not a tested universal remedy. Avoid indiscriminate process-killing, generic collections of Chrome flags, or deleting a real user profile; none is justified by the error phrase alone.

What to include when asking for help
If the checks do not isolate the fault, provide a concise reproducible report rather than only the last error line. Include:
- Operating system and exact Chrome, ChromeDriver and Selenium versions.
- The installation source and Chrome binary path.
- The complete exception plus relevant ChromeDriver log lines.
- All launch arguments, with secrets and private data removed.
- Whether Chrome exits, whether the issue occurs on initial session creation or after a successful relaunch, and whether a fresh dedicated data directory changes the result.
- A minimal sequence of steps that reproduces the failure, noting whether other automation sessions are running.
Do not include authentication tokens, cookies, private URLs or personal profile data in a public issue.

The most useful next step is to identify whether Chrome failed during startup or became unreachable later, then correlate that event with exact versions, logs and launch arguments.
