When CasperJS reports a permission error while saving a screenshot, check the destination path first: the parent directory must exist, the process must be able to traverse every parent directory, and the user running CasperJS must be allowed to write there. Use an absolute path to a known-writable directory to rule out working-directory surprises. If that does not resolve it, check the runtime binary, mounted volumes, and security controls before treating the failure as a CasperJS bug.
What CasperJS needs in order to save a screenshot
CasperJS writes the image to the filepath you pass to capture(); captureSelector() also takes a target filepath, followed by a selector. A failure at this point is often about the local filesystem, not the website being captured. The process needs a destination it can reach and write to, and the path must identify a file within a valid directory.
That distinction matters because “permission denied” does not, by itself, tell you which condition failed. A missing parent directory, a path that resolves somewhere unexpected, a read-only mount, or a process running under a different account can all make a seemingly reasonable filename unwritable. Work through the checks below in order so that each change tests one likely cause.
Fix the destination path first
Print and resolve the exact path
Log the exact string passed to this.capture() or this.captureSelector(). If it is relative, resolve it from the process working directory—not necessarily the directory you expected from the shell or the location of the CasperJS script. A job runner, service, IDE, scheduled task, or container may start the process with a different working directory.

For diagnosis, switch temporarily to an absolute path. This removes ambiguity about where CasperJS is trying to write. On POSIX systems, /tmp is often a convenient temporary location, but it is not guaranteed writable in every sandbox or container; choose a directory that the actual runtime user is permitted to use. On Windows, use a Windows absolute path and account for JavaScript string escaping, for example C:\work\shots\example.png.
Create the parent directory before capture
The screenshot call should not be expected to create missing directories for you. Create the output directory ahead of time, then use a filename inside it. For example, on a POSIX shell:
mkdir -p screenshots
After that, a relative destination such as screenshots/test.png is meaningful only if CasperJS starts in the project directory containing that folder. An absolute destination avoids that dependency. Do not begin by targeting system-owned directories such as application installation paths; use a project-owned output folder or a suitable temporary directory instead.

Make sure the target is actually a file path
Inspect the complete destination, including its final component. A typo may point to a regular file where CasperJS expects a directory in the path, or the parent component may not be a directory at all. Also check whether the destination is on a mounted volume that is unavailable or mounted read-only. A filename that looks valid in source code is not proof that its full path exists or is writable at runtime.

Check the account and every parent directory
The identity that matters is the account running the CasperJS process, not necessarily the account that owns the source code or launched an interactive terminal. This can differ when a script runs through a service, CI job, container, task scheduler, or elevated command.
For a POSIX environment, these shell checks can help reveal the working directory, account, and directory permissions:
pwd
id
ls -ld . screenshots
Run them in the same execution context as CasperJS where possible. The directory should be writable by that account, and every parent directory needs execute/traverse permission so the process can reach the destination. If the output folder is missing, create it as the intended user. If ownership or mode is wrong, correct it narrowly for that output directory rather than broadly weakening permissions on a system path.

A path can exist inside the process namespace but still be read-only, incorrectly mapped, or owned in a way that prevents writes. Resolve the issue at the volume or runtime configuration level; changing an unrelated host directory will not help if CasperJS writes elsewhere.

Instrument the capture so the failure is visible
CasperJS provides a capture.saved event that reports the target file, and general error handling can report an error and backtrace. Add listeners temporarily to make the destination and runtime report explicit:

Replace the example destination with an absolute path that already exists and is writable by the process. A successful capture.saved message confirms the file target CasperJS reports; if no success message appears, retain the error output and use it alongside the filesystem checks. Event logging helps locate the failure but does not grant permissions or create directories.
Rule out security controls and runtime mismatches
Check antivirus, endpoint controls, and sandbox policy
Security software can block filesystem writes even when ordinary directory ownership and mode appear correct. PhantomJS package documentation identifies over-zealous antivirus as one possible permission-denied cause, alongside lack of write access and other filesystem write blockers. If the error occurs only on a managed machine, review the relevant endpoint-control or sandbox logs and policy. Do not disable protection globally as a first diagnostic; ask an administrator to confirm whether the specific process and destination are being blocked.

CasperJS depends on PhantomJS, and multiple installed binaries can make a script behave differently from the version you intended to use. Check the reported version and executable resolution in the same environment that starts CasperJS:

phantomjs --version
command -v phantomjs
command -v is for POSIX shells; use the equivalent executable lookup for your platform. Compare the result with the binary your job or service is configured to launch. If different shells, users, or environments report different executables, resolve that ambiguity before debugging the capture code. A version mismatch may not be the permission cause, but it can make reproduction inconsistent.
Isolate whether CasperJS or the environment is responsible
If an absolute path, existing parent directory, and verified write access still fail, reduce the example to one page and one capture call. Then reproduce the output failure with a minimal native-PhantomJS script, outside CasperJS. CasperJS’s FAQ recommends comparing native PhantomJS behavior when investigating a failure; if the same write problem occurs there, the evidence points toward the PhantomJS runtime or environment rather than CasperJS event handling.
If the native reproduction also fails, preserve the smallest example, exact destination, runtime version, process identity, and any security or mount restrictions when investigating the environment or relevant PhantomJS issue channels. If native PhantomJS succeeds but CasperJS fails, compare the actual executable and launch environment used by each process, then check whether the CasperJS script passes the same target path you tested. This is a way to narrow the fault, not proof that either project is responsible.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes

CasperJS maintenance and when to plan a migration
CasperJS states that it is no longer actively maintained and recommends it mainly for existing production tests that still need PhantomJS 1.9. That is relevant if the filesystem checks are clean but failures persist: an old runtime can have issues that are not fixed by changing the screenshot path. First separate a real permissions problem from a runtime problem using the diagnostic sequence above. If the application still depends on CasperJS, consider migration as a separate maintenance decision rather than treating it as the immediate fix for a bad destination path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot permission error usually mean the website refused the capture?
Not necessarily. When the error occurs at the save step, first investigate the local destination and runtime; a page-loading problem and a filesystem write failure are different failure points.
Should I change the file mode to make the screenshot directory writable by everyone?
No. Grant the specific account running CasperJS the needed access to the output directory, and preserve the restrictions on unrelated system paths.
