HTTP status 0 is a symptom, not a diagnosis. In CasperJS, it usually means the browser engine (PhantomJS or SlimerJS) did not provide a usable HTTP response to CasperJS. The cause could be a DNS or TLS failure, an unreachable server, a timeout, a script that aborted or rewrote the request, or another client-side failure. Capture both the normal resource events and explicit error data before changing settings; the evidence tells you which branch to investigate.

What “status 0” actually means

Zero is not an official HTTP response code. It does not prove that the remote server returned 0, and it does not identify the failure. Browser and client APIs may expose zero when no usable response was completed. Treat it as a label for an incomplete request, then inspect the event that produced it.

CasperJS sits on PhantomJS or SlimerJS. Its resource events let you separate two fundamentally different situations:

Evidence What it tells you Next check
resource.received with a URL and status The engine received response information. The status may be a normal HTTP status, including an HTTP error such as 404 or 500. Inspect the URL, redirects, response status and server logs.
resource.error with errorCode and errorString The resource failed at the client/network layer or was terminated before a usable response. Correlate the error text with DNS, TLS, connectivity, timeout and script actions.
resource.timeout CasperJS stopped waiting after the configured interval and continued page work. Compare elapsed time with settings.resourceTimeout; raise it only for a demonstrably slow resource.

A status printed by your own logging code can therefore hide whether a response existed at all. Always preserve the complete event payload and the exact resource URL.

Step 1: capture the resource evidence before navigation

Install listeners before casper.start(). This diagnostic pattern uses fields documented by CasperJS; verify event names and payloads against the exact CasperJS and PhantomJS/SlimerJS versions installed on your machine.

var casper = require('casper').create({
    verbose: true,
    logLevel: 'debug'
});

casper.on('resource.requested', function (requestData) {
    this.echo('REQUEST ' + requestData.id + ' ' +
        requestData.method + ' ' + requestData.url);
});

casper.on('resource.received', function (resource) {
    this.echo('RECEIVED ' + resource.id + ' ' +
        resource.status + ' ' + resource.url);
});

casper.on('resource.error', function (error) {
    this.echo('RESOURCE ERROR ' + error.id + ' ' +
        error.errorCode + ' ' + error.errorString +
        ' ' + error.url, 'ERROR');
});

casper.on('resource.timeout', function (request) {
    this.echo('RESOURCE TIMEOUT ' + request.id + ' ' + request.url, 'WARNING');
});

casper.start('https://example.invalid/');
casper.run();

resource.requested includes request metadata and a network request object. resource.received exposes response information such as URL and status. resource.error exposes an error code, error string, URL and resource ID. Log those values together, but redact passwords, authorization values and sensitive query parameters before sharing logs.

If your installed release does not expose resource.timeout with the same payload shape, keep the listener but consult that release’s API reference and rely on the fields it actually supplies.

Step 2: rule out a request your script changed

Search for explicit aborts

Search the script and included modules for networkRequest.abort(), calls to a request object’s abort(), and handlers assigned through casper.page.onResourceRequested. PhantomJS documents that aborting a request invokes the resource-error callback. A resulting status 0 is therefore self-inflicted, not a remote HTTP response.

Search for URL rewrites

Also search for networkRequest.changeUrl() and code that mutates request URLs. Compare the URL printed by resource.requested with the URL you intended to load. A rewrite can send the engine to an invalid host, an unsupported scheme or a URL that the server rejects.

Check filtering logic

Ad, tracker or resource-type filters can unintentionally block a stylesheet, script, API call or navigation dependency. Temporarily disable custom filtering and reproduce once. If the error disappears, narrow the filter to the unwanted resource instead of suppressing every request.

Step 3: investigate timeout evidence

CasperJS’s resource.timeout event indicates that the request stopped trying after the configured interval; page execution then proceeds. This is different from receiving an HTTP error response. Record the request start time, timeout value and URL.

When increasing the timeout is justified

  • The same URL eventually responds when fetched from the same machine.
  • The timeout event occurs consistently near your configured limit.
  • Server or proxy logs show the request was still processing.

Raise settings.resourceTimeout only after those observations. A larger value cannot repair a wrong URL, an unreachable host, a certificate negotiation failure, an intentional abort or a server-side rejection. Change the setting narrowly, reproduce, and compare event timing again.

When it is not a timeout

If resource.error appears immediately, or its error string identifies name resolution, connection refusal or TLS negotiation, changing the timeout only delays the same failure. Keep the original timeout while you investigate the underlying condition.

Step 4: correlate the URL with independent network evidence

Use the exact URL from the event log and test it from the machine running CasperJS. Check each layer separately:

  1. Name resolution: confirm the hostname resolves using the machine’s configured DNS.
  2. Connectivity: verify that the destination port is reachable through firewalls and security groups.
  3. TLS: check certificate validity, protocol compatibility and any intercepting proxy.
  4. Redirects: record every redirect and confirm the final host is reachable and permitted.
  5. Server behavior: inspect application, reverse-proxy and web-server logs at the same timestamp.

Record the CasperJS version, PhantomJS or SlimerJS version, operating system, proxy settings and whether a direct command-line fetch from that host succeeds. A URL that works on a developer laptop may fail in a CI container with different DNS, certificates, egress rules or proxy variables.

How to read common outcomes

Observed pattern Most useful interpretation Action
REQUEST, then RECEIVED with 200–599 A response completed; this is not a status-0 transport failure. Handle the HTTP status, body, redirect or application behavior.
REQUEST, then RESOURCE ERROR with a DNS-like message Name resolution or host selection failed. Check DNS configuration, hostname spelling and split-horizon DNS.
RESOURCE ERROR with a TLS/certificate message Secure-channel negotiation failed. Inspect the certificate chain, clock, proxy interception and engine TLS support.
RESOURCE TIMEOUT at a repeatable interval The configured wait elapsed. Measure server latency; adjust timeout only when the resource is legitimately slow.
RESOURCE ERROR immediately after a request handler runs Your code may have aborted or rewritten the request. Remove the intervention temporarily, then refine it.

These are investigation branches, not a ranking of causes. Status 0 alone cannot establish which one applies.

Common fixes and their limits

Fix the URL or redirect target

Correct malformed schemes, missing ports and stale hosts. Follow redirects in the log; the failing URL may be different from the URL passed to casper.start().

Repair the runtime’s trust and network path

Install the required CA certificates, correct the system clock, configure the proxy explicitly and allow outbound traffic from the execution host. Do not disable certificate verification as a permanent fix; that hides the evidence and weakens transport security.

Remove accidental aborts

Comment out abort or URL-change code for one reproduction. If the response then arrives, restore the handler with a precise condition and log every request it changes.

Handle a genuinely slow endpoint

Increase settings.resourceTimeout in a controlled test, and keep a page-level deadline so a single third-party asset cannot stall the whole job indefinitely. Prefer fixing the slow server or removing a nonessential dependency.

Or skip the browser setup

If your actual goal is to obtain a clean image or PDF rather than debug a legacy CasperJS flow, ScreenshotNeo makes one HTTP request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

CasperJS’s maintenance status and migration planning

The CasperJS project repository states: “CasperJS is no longer actively maintained.” That status affects compatibility, browser-engine support and the effort required to resolve future TLS or web-platform changes. It does not prove that an individual status-0 event was caused by CasperJS’s age.

Preserve the event logs, environment versions and network evidence first. Then decide whether to repair the existing script for a fixed legacy environment or plan migration to a currently maintained browser automation stack. Migration is a separate engineering decision; do not use it as a substitute for identifying the immediate failing resource.

Operational checklist

  • Register listeners before navigation.
  • Log request, received, error and timeout events with IDs and URLs.
  • Redact credentials and sensitive query values before sharing logs.
  • Search for abort(), changeUrl() and resource-request handlers.
  • Compare timeout timing with settings.resourceTimeout.
  • Test DNS, connectivity, TLS, redirects and server logs from the execution host.
  • Record CasperJS, PhantomJS/SlimerJS, OS and proxy versions.
  • Only then change timeout, filtering or runtime configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does HTTP status 0 mean the server returned HTTP 0?

No. HTTP has no status-0 response code. In this context it means the client did not expose a usable response; inspect CasperJS resource events and error fields.

Should I always increase resourceTimeout?

No. Increase it only when a timeout event and independent timing show that the target is reachable but legitimately slow. It cannot fix DNS, TLS, bad URLs or deliberate aborts.

Can CasperJS status-0 failures be fixed permanently?

The fix depends on the captured evidence. Some are configuration or script bugs; others are environmental or server conditions. Because CasperJS is no longer actively maintained, also evaluate migration separately.
