“Capture error” can describe two different failures: the map never renders (often a blank or gray surface), or GoogleMap.snapshot() fails to deliver an image. Diagnose those paths separately. First preserve the exact log output, Maps SDK dependency version, device or emulator model, signing configuration, and the code path that fails; without them, no single root cause can be asserted.
1. Identify which capture problem you have
| Symptom | Likely path | First evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Map area is blank, gray, or never loads | Rendering, credentials, project configuration, or device setup | Filtered Google Maps Android API log lines while reproducing |
Map appears, but no image arrives from snapshot() |
Callback, thread, lifecycle, or bitmap handling | Snapshot call site, callback code, and foreground state of the map view |
Google now refers to the product as Maps SDK for Android. “Android API v2” is legacy package terminology; it does not identify the dependency version in your app. Check the actual Gradle dependency before comparing behavior.
2. Diagnose a blank or gray map
Capture the SDK’s own diagnostic output
Reproduce the failure with the affected build connected, then run:
adb logcat -e "Google Maps Android API"
Keep the complete output around the failure, including the first error and any lines immediately before it. Do not replace the log with a screenshot of the gray map: the log usually distinguishes a key, project, signing, or device problem.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Verify the manifest key
Confirm that the running application references the intended key, not a different flavor or an old generated resource. A typical manifest entry is:
<application
android:hardwareAccelerated="true">
<meta-data
android:name="com.google.android.geo.API_KEY"
android:value="@string/google_maps_key" />
</application>
Inspect the merged manifest for the build variant you actually installed. A correct key in src/main can still be overridden by a debug or release manifest.
Confirm project and API enablement
- Billing is enabled on the Google Cloud project that owns the key.
- Maps SDK for Android is enabled for that same project.
- The key is valid for the project and has not been deleted or replaced.
Maps usage requires billing and a valid API key or OAuth token. Usage and charges are organized by SKU, so check the current Cloud console configuration and terms rather than relying on an old price or free-use article.
Check Android application restrictions
If the key is restricted to Android apps, its restriction must contain the signing-certificate SHA-1 fingerprint for the installed build’s application ID. Debug, release, locally signed, and store-signed artifacts can have different fingerprints. Compare the fingerprint for the exact APK or app bundle variant you are running, then compare its package name with the key restriction.

Do not temporarily remove restrictions as a first response in production. If you use a short diagnostic change, restore the restriction after confirming the correct package and fingerprint.
Check Google Play services and hardware acceleration
Ensure the Google Play services Maps dependency is present in Gradle and resolves successfully. A missing, excluded, or incompatible dependency can prevent the map surface from initializing. Also keep hardware acceleration enabled for the application or affected activity; disabling it can cause map-loading problems.
dependencies {
implementation("com.google.android.gms:play-services-maps:<your-version>")
}
Use the version already selected by your project’s dependency management and verify it against the current Maps SDK documentation. The placeholder above is intentional: the evidence available for this diagnosis does not establish a universal version number.

3. Fix GoogleMap.snapshot() failures
Call it on the main thread while the map is visible
The snapshot operation runs on the main thread and should be invoked only while the underlying map view or fragment is in the foreground. Wait until the map is ready and the owning UI is resumed; do not call it after the fragment view has been destroyed or while the activity is stopped.

class MapActivity : AppCompatActivity(), OnMapReadyCallback {
private var map: GoogleMap? = null
override fun onMapReady(googleMap: GoogleMap) {
map = googleMap
}
fun captureMap() {
val currentMap = map ?: return
runOnUiThread {
currentMap.snapshot { bitmap ->
if (bitmap == null) {
// Record a diagnostic event and show a retry state.
return@snapshot
}
imageView.setImageBitmap(bitmap)
}
}
}
}
In a fragment, use the view lifecycle: make sure the map fragment and its view are still attached, and avoid retaining a callback that outlives the view. If the user leaves the screen before the callback returns, discard the result safely.
Use the bitmap delivered by the callback
snapshot() delivers the image through SnapshotReadyCallback. When you supply a preallocated bitmap, map dimensions can change before capture completes. Consume the bitmap passed to the callback instead of assuming that the original allocation is the returned image.
currentMap.snapshot(object : GoogleMap.SnapshotReadyCallback {
override fun onSnapshotReady(bitmap: Bitmap?) {
if (bitmap == null) {
logCaptureFailure("null snapshot")
return
}
// Use this callback bitmap; do not assume a preallocated bitmap was returned.
saveForInAppUse(bitmap)
}
})
Do not confuse a callback failure with a rendering failure
A map can render correctly while a snapshot call is made at the wrong lifecycle point. Conversely, a callback can be wired correctly while the map itself is blank. Log both states: whether onMapReady ran, whether tiles became visible, when snapshot() was called, and whether the callback received null or a bitmap.

4. Snapshot-use restrictions
The Maps SDK API reference limits captured map images: they must not be transmitted to your servers or otherwise used outside the app. If another app or person needs the map, send data that lets the recipient reconstruct the map instead of sending the snapshot image. Treat an image upload, remote cache, analytics attachment, or server-side PDF conversion as outside the documented use.

5. A repeatable troubleshooting workflow
- Record the exact symptom: blank surface, callback never invoked, null bitmap, exception, or wrong dimensions.
- Record the installed build variant, application ID, Maps SDK dependency version, Android version, device or emulator, and whether Google Play services is available.
- Run
adb logcat -e "Google Maps Android API"during reproduction and save the output. - For a blank map, verify manifest key, billing, Maps SDK enablement, SHA-1 restriction, dependency resolution, and hardware acceleration.
- For a snapshot issue, verify foreground lifecycle, main-thread execution, callback registration, and use of the callback bitmap.
- Retest with the same artifact after each single configuration change so that a successful result identifies the changed condition.
6. Common errors and fixes
| Observed result | Probable cause to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Blank or gray tiles | Wrong key, disabled SDK, billing, or key restriction mismatch | Read filtered logcat, then compare project, package, and SHA-1 for the installed build. |
| Map works in debug but not release | Different signing certificate or manifest value | Inspect the release merged manifest and add the release certificate fingerprint to the key restriction. |
| No snapshot callback | Call made off the main thread or after the UI left foreground | Invoke while the map UI is resumed and marshal the call to the main thread. |
| Null snapshot bitmap | Capture completed without an image, often during an invalid lifecycle or map state | Log the state, wait for a visible ready map, and offer a retry. |
| Wrong size or stale preallocated image | Map dimensions changed before completion | Use the bitmap received by SnapshotReadyCallback. |
| Works on one emulator only | Device image, Play services, acceleration, or network differences | Compare Play services availability, hardware acceleration, and log output on both devices. |
7. Reliability, performance, and privacy considerations
A snapshot is asynchronous: keep the UI responsive, avoid starting overlapping captures from repeated taps, and cancel or ignore results after the screen is destroyed. Hold only the bitmap you need, because full map images can consume significant memory on high-density displays. If a capture is for an in-app preview, display or process it locally and release it when the screen no longer needs it.
For recurring captures, record timing around the request and callback, but do not upload the map image to measure it remotely. Test cold start, rotation, background/foreground transitions, slow networks, and devices without usable Google Play services. These cases expose lifecycle and initialization races that a single emulator run can hide.
