If a CAPTCHA is missing, stuck loading, repeatedly asks you to verify, or rejects a completed challenge, start by updating your browser, enabling JavaScript, and temporarily disabling extensions that might interfere. Then retry in another supported browser. If the problem persists only on one website, its CAPTCHA setup or service may be at fault, so contact that website’s support. For an expired challenge, verify again near the end of the form or checkout.
First, identify what is going wrong
“CAPTCHA not working” can describe several different failures. The symptom helps you choose a useful first check instead of changing multiple settings at once.
- CAPTCHA not showing: The page may not have loaded its scripts, JavaScript may be disabled, or an extension may be blocking part of the widget.
- CAPTCHA not loading: A connection problem, browser setting, extension, VPN, or security program may be interrupting the request.
- The checkbox works but a challenge gets stuck: Try another supported browser and check whether the site finishes loading normally.
- Verification failed or the challenge expired: Start a new verification and complete it promptly. Google reCAPTCHA Help displays this expiration message: “Verification challenge expired, check the checkbox again for a new challenge.”
- “Your computer or network may be sending automated queries” or repeated challenges: This can happen to legitimate visitors as well as automated traffic; it does not by itself prove that you did anything wrong.
- The same error appears only on one website: The site may have a CAPTCHA integration or service problem, which usually requires its owner to investigate.
Fix a CAPTCHA that is missing or not showing
Update the browser and check JavaScript
Use a current version of a browser supported by the CAPTCHA provider. Google lists the two latest major versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Chromium-based Microsoft Edge for desktop. Its mobile list includes Chrome, Safari, and the Android native browser. The supported-version window moves as browser releases change, so an old browser may fall outside it.
Check that JavaScript is enabled for the site, then reload the page. Google’s guidance for a missing reCAPTCHA checkbox also recommends updating the browser and disabling conflicting plugins. Do not install an unfamiliar extension or script as a supposed CAPTCHA fix.

Test extensions and content blockers
Privacy, ad-blocking, script-control, and security extensions can affect page resources, but that does not mean any particular extension is necessarily responsible. Temporarily disable extensions for the affected site, reload, and see whether the widget appears. If that works, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the one associated with the change. Restore the others rather than leaving all protection disabled.
Also check whether the browser is blocking site cookies. Google says reCAPTCHA uses a necessary _GRECAPTCHA cookie for risk analysis. This is an implementation detail, not a reason to edit the website’s code as a visitor.
Fix a CAPTCHA that spins or will not load
Compare browsers without changing several things at once
Open the same page in another supported, updated browser. If the CAPTCHA works there, the problem may be associated with the original browser’s configuration or extensions. If it fails in both, that still does not prove the website is at fault, but it makes a single-browser explanation less likely. These comparisons are clues, not conclusive tests.

Check the connection and security settings
General page-loading errors can involve an unstable connection, cookies, extensions, high memory use, a VPN, or security software. Test one suspected cause at a time so you can tell whether the result changes:

- Reload the page once after confirming your internet connection is stable.
- If you use a VPN or security product that filters web traffic, temporarily test without the relevant filtering, if safe and permitted by your organization.
- Try a private browsing window only if it does not disable a setting you need; extensions may behave differently there.
- Try another supported browser, then restore any setting you changed if it did not help.
Do not bypass workplace or school security controls without permission. If you are on a managed network, ask its administrator to check whether the CAPTCHA service is being blocked.
What to do about repeated challenges or unusual-traffic warnings
Google says a legitimate visitor may see an unusual-traffic warning because a shared network is being abused, an IP address was recently assigned and has a suspicious reputation, or the destination site is under attack. The warning is not proof that your own computer sent automated requests.

Wait and try again later if the page allows it. If you are on a shared connection, another person’s activity can affect how the network is assessed. Avoid repeatedly refreshing or submitting the form; repeated attempts may not clear the underlying condition. For a persistent Google warning, consult Google’s official unusual-traffic help. If the warning is on another provider’s CAPTCHA, use that provider’s help or contact the site.
Complete expired challenges at the right time
A verification can expire after inactivity or a timeout. Complete it close to the end of the task: fill in the form first, then verify and submit without a long pause. If the site reports that the challenge expired, select the checkbox again or request a fresh challenge, then complete the next step promptly. Do not assume the earlier verification remains valid after the page has been idle.
When the website owner needs to fix it
If ordinary browser checks do not help, especially when the failure is limited to one site or remains across browsers, contact that site’s support. Google’s developer guidance identifies integration-side causes such as invalid keys, unsupported domain configuration, and client-side network failures or timeouts. A visitor generally cannot correct those settings.

When reporting the issue, include the page address, approximate time, browser and version, device type, the exact error text, and whether another supported browser showed the same failure. Do not send passwords, payment details, or private challenge tokens. A screenshot of the error can help support understand what is visible, but it cannot establish the site’s underlying configuration problem.
For developers who own the site, check the reCAPTCHA integration configuration and browser-side network errors, including whether the configured domain and keys are valid. Google’s implementation guidance notes that www.recaptcha.net can be used where www.google.com is not accessible; this is a site-owner configuration option, not a change an ordinary visitor should make. Review the provider’s current developer documentation and test the integration on the affected domain.

Keep the diagnosis safe and useful
- Change one setting at a time and reverse changes that do not affect the problem.
- Do not disable security software permanently or share credentials to get help with a CAPTCHA.
- Do not repeatedly submit sensitive forms while the challenge is failing; check for duplicate transactions before retrying a payment.
- Distinguish a visitor-side display failure from a site-side integration issue. Browser comparisons can narrow possibilities but cannot reveal a site’s private key or configuration.

Can a CAPTCHA fail because I am using a VPN?
A VPN or security filter can be one factor in a page-loading problem, and a shared or suspiciously rated network can be associated with unusual-traffic warnings. Neither fact proves the VPN caused a particular failure.
Should I clear all browser data to fix a CAPTCHA?
Start with the narrower checks—browser update, JavaScript, extensions, and another browser—before clearing data. Clearing cookies can sign you out of sites and is not a guaranteed fix.
