If Premiere Pro shows “Cannot Find Valid Editing Modes,” first check whether it happens in one project or in every project. The message indicates Premiere could not load a usable sequence-editing configuration; Adobe does not document one universal cause for this exact error. As a quick workaround, try creating a sequence from a known-good clip. Before troubleshooting an existing project, close Premiere and make a copy of the project file and its autosaves.
First, try creating a sequence from a clip
This can bypass a broken or unavailable preset selection. Open a new or existing project, import a clip you know Premiere can read, then drag the clip onto the New Item button at the bottom of the Project panel. Premiere should create a sequence based on the clip’s properties. In some versions, you can also right-click the clip and choose the command to create a sequence from it.
Check the result before editing: confirm the frame size, frame rate, orientation, and audio settings suit the finished video. A low-resolution proxy, vertical clip, or unusual source file may create a sequence that is not right for your main footage. Adobe’s sequence-setting reference also recommends matching sequence settings to the primary footage.

- Open Premiere and create a blank project in a simple local folder.
- Try to create a sequence in that project.
If it works: Premiere can create sequences, so focus on the original project, one of its sequences, or a dependency it uses. Work from a duplicate and follow the project-recovery steps below.

If it fails in the blank project too: focus first on Premiere’s preferences, media cache, presets, plug-ins, or installation. A blank-project test is diagnostic; it does not repair the original project.
Also note when the error appears: while choosing File > New > Sequence, opening a project, importing a sequence, launching Premiere, or immediately after an update or plug-in installation. If it appears before you select or import media, a particular video file is less likely to be the cause.
Reset preferences and caches
Adobe’s launch reset options are a safer first choice than deleting unfamiliar folders. Exit Premiere completely, then relaunch it while holding a supported modifier key. Adobe documents these mappings for the reset options dialog: Alt on Windows or Option on macOS resets app preferences; Shift resets the plug-in loading cache; and Alt + Shift or Option + Shift resets both. Ctrl + 3 on Windows or Command + 3 on macOS disables third-party video plug-ins. Depending on the action and version, the dialog may let you select reset actions directly. See Adobe’s current launch-reset instructions.
Try Clear media cache files first. If the problem remains, try Reset app preferences, then test again. Resetting preferences can remove custom keyboard shortcuts, workspaces, label colors, and other custom settings. Adobe explains the effects of a reset here. Back up customizations if you can, and restore them selectively rather than copying an entire old profile back, which could restore the problem.
Clear the media cache from Premiere
If Premiere stays open, use the media-cache settings:

- Windows: Edit > Preferences > Media Cache.
- macOS: Premiere > Settings > Media Cache.
Select Delete beside Remove Media Cache Files, then choose whether to remove unused files or all cache files. Close all projects before choosing to delete all files. Premiere rebuilds cache as needed, so opening a project or importing media may take longer the next time. Clearing cache does not delete your original footage or prove that cache corruption caused this particular error. See Adobe’s cache-clearing instructions.
If Premiere cannot stay open
Close Premiere before manually clearing the cache. Adobe lists these default locations:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Windows:
C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingAdobeCommon - macOS:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common
Remove the cache contents, not your source media or project files. The path can differ if you changed the cache location. Premiere will recreate needed files; a large project may take longer to open while that happens. Check Adobe’s manual cache-removal guidance.
If the launch reset does not help
Close Premiere, then back up and rename or move its preferences folder rather than deleting it. Adobe’s documented default locations are:
- Windows:
C:Users<username>DocumentsAdobePremiere Pro<version>Profile-<profilename> - macOS:
/Users/<username>/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/<version>/Profile-<profilename>
Restart Premiere; it should create a fresh preferences folder. Folder locations can vary by version or setup, so consult Adobe’s preference-folder instructions if you do not find the folder. Renaming it preserves a route back to the old settings, but restoring the whole folder may bring back the issue.

Check third-party plug-ins
If the error began after you installed or updated a plug-in, launch with third-party video plug-ins disabled using the reset option above. Test sequence creation in a blank project. If it now works, update or remove the likely incompatible plug-in, then re-enable plug-ins in groups to narrow down the cause.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not delete plug-in files indiscriminately. Existing projects may rely on their effects, and removing a plug-in can leave missing-effect warnings or change how a project behaves.
Repair a project that fails on its own
If a blank project works but the original does not, keep the original project and autosaves untouched while you test a copy. If the project is on a network, removable, or cloud-synchronized drive, copy the working duplicate to a local SSD for troubleshooting.
- Open the duplicate. If a particular sequence triggers the error, avoid opening it repeatedly while testing.
- Create a new blank project and use File > Import to import the original project. Where possible, bring in bins or sequences in smaller groups rather than all at once.
- Test sequences individually. If the error appears only when one sequence is opened, that sequence is a stronger suspect than the application-wide setup.
- If necessary, create a replacement sequence from a source clip and move or import the usable project contents into it.
- If the current project remains unusable, try an autosave copy. Keep all autosaves until you have verified the recovered project.
A damaged project file, sequence metadata, version difference, or missing dependency are possibilities—not confirmed explanations for every occurrence of this message. Importing a project into a new one can help isolate the fault, but it is not guaranteed to repair damaged contents.

An editing mode is part of a sequence’s technical configuration. It relates to how Premiere handles properties such as frame size, frame rate, fields, pixel aspect ratio, and preview format. It is not a video codec or export format, and it is different from the codec used by an imported MP4 or MOV.

If creating a sequence from a clip works but the sequence dialog does not, choose File > New > Sequence and try a standard preset that matches your main footage. Depending on the installed version, settings may appear under a Settings or General tab. If you need a combination the standard presets do not provide, look for the version’s custom sequence option and set the frame size, timebase, pixel aspect ratio, fields, audio sample rate, and preview settings deliberately. Labels differ between releases; older guides may call a custom workflow “Desktop,” so follow the label shown in your installation rather than assuming that name is universal.
Adobe’s sequence reference describes custom sequences and editing-mode settings, but it is an older document; current menus may differ.
Test the media separately
Use a known-good clip—such as an ordinary H.264 MP4 that Premiere normally supports—to test sequence creation. If that succeeds but one source file causes an import, decoding, or playback failure, troubleshoot that file separately. Variable-frame-rate, damaged, or unusual media can cause related problems, but the available Adobe documentation does not establish that unsupported media alone causes this exact editing-modes message.
Transcoding may help when evidence points to a troublesome clip, but “convert everything to MP4” is not a universal fix. The codec, frame rate, audio, and file condition matter, and transcoding takes time and storage. It will not repair broken preferences, presets, plug-ins, or a damaged project.

Update, roll back, or reinstall only after the tests
If a clean project still fails after resetting preferences and cache and testing without third-party video plug-ins, check Creative Cloud for a Premiere update. If the problem began immediately after an update, test an earlier installed version if one is available to you. Reinstall Premiere only after these lower-risk checks; reinstalling may repair damaged application files, but it does not fix a damaged project and may not remove user preferences or third-party components. Preserve your projects, autosaves, presets, and plug-in information first.
Contact Adobe Support if every new project still fails after these steps, if the message accompanies crashes or installation problems, or if you cannot recover the project from a copy or autosave. Provide your Premiere version, operating system, when the error occurs, and which tests you have tried.
