Start by checking the capture scale, then the image format and compression, the page state, and finally the browser and host environment. These are separate causes: increasing pixel dimensions can help if an image is being enlarged, but it will not undo lossy compression or make inconsistent font rendering match.
1. Check the capture scale and pixel dimensions
Playwright’s screenshot scale determines how CSS pixels map to output-image pixels. The Page screenshot API defaults to device scale; screenshot assertions use a different default. Check which API created the image before changing settings.
| Capture method | Documented default | What the scale means |
|---|---|---|
page.screenshot() |
device (Playwright Page screenshot API documentation) |
One output pixel per device pixel. A high-DPI context can produce more output pixels than CSS pixels. |
toHaveScreenshot() |
css (Playwright screenshot assertion documentation) |
One output pixel per CSS pixel. |
For a standalone capture, set scale explicitly so the output is intentional rather than dependent on a default. Device scale can provide more pixels where the context has a higher device pixel ratio. CSS scale gives a direct one-to-one CSS-pixel image. Neither setting changes the page’s CSS layout; it changes the screenshot’s pixel mapping.

Compare the file’s pixel dimensions with the size at which it is displayed. If a 900-pixel-wide capture is shown at 1,800 pixels wide, the viewer or page has to enlarge it, which can make edges look soft. Capture at a scale that suits the intended display, or avoid enlarging the resulting file. Do not assume that choosing device scale guarantees a sharper result: later resizing, lossy encoding, or different rendering can still make it look blurred.

Run a controlled PNG comparison
This Node.js example captures the same page at both scales. It uses PNG to keep compression out of the first comparison. Install Playwright and its browser before running it; replace the URL with the page you need to inspect.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-css.png', type: 'png', scale: 'css' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-device.png', type: 'png', scale: 'device' });
await browser.close();
})();
Open both files at the same displayed size and compare them. If the device-scale file has more pixels but looks identical at its native size, your original issue may have been display enlargement rather than an incorrectly rendered page. If both look soft, continue with encoding and rendering checks.
2. Rule out lossy image encoding
For diagnosis, first capture PNG or lossless WebP. Playwright’s quality option applies to JPEG and WebP, not PNG. The Page screenshot API documents JPEG quality as 80 by default; WebP quality 100 is lossless, while lower WebP quality is lossy. A quality setting will not sharpen an already blurred capture.
- PNG: useful for a clean visual comparison; changing
qualitydoes not affect it. - JPEG: lossy. Lower quality can introduce softness or compression artifacts, especially around text and fine edges.
- WebP: quality 100 is documented as lossless; lower values use lossy compression.
Once you know the capture itself is sharp, choose a format and quality appropriate to the use. If the PNG is clear but a JPEG or lower-quality WebP looks soft, the scale is probably not the main issue. Recreate the image from the page at the desired format and quality rather than trying to repair the compressed file.

3. Capture a stable page state
A screenshot taken while content is moving or changing can appear smeared, incomplete, or inconsistent even when the output dimensions are adequate. The Page screenshot API allows animations by default; set animations to disabled when you need a still capture. This affects page state, not pixel resolution.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'stable-page.png',
type: 'png',
scale: 'device',
animations: 'disabled'
});
For a visual regression test, toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match and its documented default disables animations. That wait-and-compare behavior makes the assertion more repeatable; it is not a higher-resolution mode.
const { test, expect } = require('@playwright/test');
test('page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('page.png');
});
When an assertion is unexpectedly different, distinguish a true visual change from a capture taken at a different point in a changing page. Use the same test flow and state when producing and comparing the baseline. Avoid treating repeated captures of moving content as evidence that the screenshot format itself is blurry.
4. Keep the rendering environment consistent
Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Fonts and browser/platform differences can change how text and other page elements are rendered. A capture that looks sharp in one environment can differ from a baseline produced in another, even if the screenshot options appear identical.

For visual comparisons, produce the baseline and the current screenshot in the same environment: keep the operating system, browser version, settings, and headless configuration consistent where possible. If a difference appears only after a machine, browser, or execution-mode change, compare those conditions before changing the page’s CSS or increasing screenshot scale. A different font rasterization or layout is not fixed by adding output pixels.
Playwright’s Visual comparisons guide describes this variability as dependent on host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Its documentation also notes that browsers and platforms can differ in rendering and fonts. There is no single scale setting that makes captures identical across environments.
5. Isolate the area that looks unclear
If the whole page looks correct but a chart, card, or text region does not, narrow the capture to that area before diagnosing the entire page. The Page screenshot API supports locator masks, clipping, and full-page capture. A clip or element-focused inspection can make a small defect easier to see, but it does not increase the source resolution by itself.

- Use clipping to inspect a specific part of the viewport.
- Use full-page capture when the element of interest is outside the visible viewport or the page extends below it.
Keep the region and capture conditions the same between comparisons. Otherwise, changes in the crop can be mistaken for changes in sharpness.

6. A practical diagnostic order
- Inspect dimensions and scale. Record whether the image came from
page.screenshot()ortoHaveScreenshot(), then explicitly setscaleand compare the output dimensions with the intended display size. - Use a clean format. Capture PNG or lossless WebP first. Do not tune
qualityfor PNG; it has no effect there. - Stabilize the capture. Disable animations for a standalone still, or use the screenshot assertion’s wait-for-matching-images behavior for a visual test.
- Match environments. Compare captures from the same browser and host setup, including headless mode and fonts where possible.
- Inspect only the failing region. Use a mask, clip, or full-page capture as appropriate, remembering that cropping is an inspection aid, not a resolution boost.
Change one factor at a time and keep the URL, viewport, page state, and environment fixed during the comparison. Otherwise, it is hard to tell which change actually addressed the blur.

The file has fewer pixels than expected
Check whether the capture used CSS scale and whether you expected device-pixel output. Set scale: 'device' explicitly for a device-pixel capture, then inspect the resulting dimensions. A larger file only helps if the display or downstream workflow uses those extra pixels rather than resizing the image down or enlarging it again.
PNG is sharp, but JPEG or WebP is soft
The difference points toward encoding. Recreate the capture using PNG as a reference, then adjust the JPEG or WebP quality as needed. Remember that quality does not apply to PNG, and lower WebP quality is lossy.
Text or edges differ from one run to another
Check whether animations or changing page content are affecting the capture. Disable animations for a still screenshot or use toHaveScreenshot() for an assertion that waits for two consecutive matching images. If the difference persists, check browser and host consistency rather than assuming scale is the cause.

The screenshot differs on another machine or in headless mode
Rendering environment differences are a known source of visual variation. Compare like with like: use the same browser version, operating system, settings, and headless configuration that produced the baseline. A new environment can alter fonts or rendering without changing the screenshot API options.
Only one section looks blurry
Capture or inspect that area with clipping or a locator mask. If the element’s original content is low resolution or being enlarged in the page itself, a crop will expose the issue but cannot manufacture detail that was not present in the rendered content.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting JPEG quality to 100 make a JPEG lossless?
No. JPEG remains a lossy format; use PNG or lossless WebP when you need an uncompressed reference for diagnosing sharpness.
Can changing screenshot scale fix a blurry image after it has been uploaded?
No. Scale affects the pixels created in a new capture. It cannot restore detail lost through compression or enlargement of an existing image.
