A blank Playwright screenshot can mean an all-white image, a transparent image, an unintended crop, or missing content in one part of the page. Start by identifying which one you have, then verify the page state and screenshot settings before changing browser flags. Those checks usually narrow the problem more reliably than guessing at a single cause.
Identify what “blank” means in your screenshot
First open the saved file in an image viewer and note its pixel dimensions. Confirm that it is a valid image of the expected format, then distinguish among these symptoms:
- All white: The image has the expected dimensions but appears to contain only a white page. Check whether the intended page actually loaded, whether the relevant content was ready, and whether the browser rendered it.
- Transparent: The image may look white against a white viewer background. Check its alpha channel and whether
omitBackgroundwas enabled. - Cropped or tiny: The output dimensions or visible area may indicate that a
cliprectangle, element bounds, or viewport differs from what you intended. - One region is missing: The rest of the page may have rendered while an iframe, canvas, lazy-loaded image, or below-the-fold section did not.
- Empty or nearly empty: The screenshot may have been taken before navigation, redirection, or client-side rendering completed.
Keep the exact screenshot call and file type with your notes. PNG supports transparency; JPEG does not. Knowing whether the output is white, transparent, cropped, or region-specific determines which checks to run next.
Confirm navigation and page state before capture
A screenshot records the browser state at capture time; it does not prove that navigation succeeded or that the page reached its intended state. Check the final URL and inspect a meaningful element before taking the image. A visible-element check is useful evidence, but it does not guarantee that every image, embedded frame, or other visual component has finished rendering.

});Replace the example URL and selector with the page and content that should appear in your capture. Inspect the navigation response and final URL when the page is blank or unexpectedly redirected. If navigation failed, diagnose that separately instead of treating the resulting image as proof of a screenshot-engine defect.
For dynamic applications, wait for a page-specific signal that means the content you need is present. A fixed delay can help diagnose a race, but it is not a reliable substitute for checking the intended page state: network activity may continue after useful content appears, or stop before a client-side component finishes rendering.
Check screenshot mode, bounds, and background options
Playwright’s Page API captures the visible viewport by default. fullPage requests the full scrollable page; clip limits capture to a rectangle. Confirm the exact options passed to page.screenshot() or locator.screenshot(), including any shared helper or wrapper that might add defaults. The Page API documentation describes these options; check the documentation for the Playwright version installed in your project when behavior is version-sensitive.

Check itsx,y,width, andheight; an unintended or zero-size region can produce a crop that looks blank.omitBackground: Hides the default white background and enables transparency. Do not use it when writing JPEG, which does not support transparency.animations: Defaults toallow. Thedisabledsetting stops CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations, but finite and infinite animations are handled differently. It can help make animated content more predictable, but it is not a general remedy for missing content.style: Applies a stylesheet for the capture. Review injected rules for selectors that hide content or alter its visibility, dimensions, or position.
Compare a plain viewport screenshot with the configured capture. If the plain image has content but the configured one does not, add options back one at a time until the change that introduces the problem is clear.
Compare viewport, full-page, and element captures
Use the smallest capture that can isolate the problem. Playwright’s screenshot guide documents viewport, full-page, buffer, and element screenshot patterns.
- Capture the visible viewport with no

locator.screenshot(). - Try
fullPage: trueonly when you need the entire scrollable document, and compare it with the viewport image.

If an element screenshot contains content but the full-page image does not, the comparison points toward a capture-mode or page-layout difference rather than a wholly blank page.

Investigate iframes, canvas, and lazy content separately
Embedded and deferred content can behave differently from ordinary DOM text. A full-page capture is not, by itself, proof that every iframe or lazy-loaded image was rendered as it would be after scrolling. When only one region is absent:
- Check whether the missing region is an iframe, canvas, or content loaded on scroll.
- Scroll the relevant region into view and compare a viewport capture with a full-page capture.
- When the frame or element can be targeted, capture it separately. A focused capture helps distinguish an issue with the content itself from one associated with the full-page image.
- Record the frame or element type and the browser/runtime details alongside the result.
A Playwright issue opened in May 2026 for version 1.59.1 reports a blank YouTube iframe area in a full-page image even though viewport-after-scroll and iframe-element captures showed content. That individual report does not establish a universal iframe workaround; it supports testing the relevant region separately and preserving the environment details. See the issue report.
Check whether the problem depends on the runtime
If the same page and capture settings work intermittently or only in one environment, change one variable at a time. Record the Playwright version, browser engine and channel, operating system or container, headed versus headless mode, navigation result, and content type. Then compare the same URL and page state while changing one of these dimensions.

- Operating system or container environment
A historical report describes a blank white Chromium image after failed navigation in a particular headless Windows setup using Playwright 1.35.0. It is evidence about that specific setup, not a general diagnosis for current blank screenshots. See the report and its stated conditions.
Playwright’s project discussion about the Chromium headless transition associated with version 1.49 notes changes in screenshot output and variation in GPU/WebGL availability, features, and performance. That is a reason to reproduce across environments when symptoms track a runtime change—not proof that a GPU flag caused your blank capture. See the project issue thread. Avoid adding browser flags until you can reproduce the difference and identify which runtime change matters.

For screenshot-based visual tests, Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot assertion waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing the last result with the expectation. This can help when visuals are unstable, but a stable blank image is still blank. Assert that the expected content is present separately—for example, that a page heading or target element is visible—so a visual assertion cannot make a missing-page problem look like a mere timing issue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does `fullPage: true` capture content that appears only after scrolling?
Not necessarily. Compare a full-page capture with a viewport capture after scrolling to the relevant content; embedded or lazy content can differ.
Can `toHaveScreenshot()` fix a blank screenshot?
No. It waits for consecutive page screenshots to match in Playwright Test, but it cannot make missing page content appear.
Should I add GPU or Chromium flags when a screenshot is blank?
Not without a reproducible comparison showing that a specific flag addresses your setup. First isolate the page state, capture options, browser/runtime, and operating system.
