If you can’t remove a device from Google Home, first select the right Home and Google Account, then open Home → All devices, touch and hold the device tile, and choose Settings → Remove device → Remove. If the option is missing or removal fails, the cause may be stale app data, Home permissions, a third-party account, or a product managed in the Nest app. A factory reset is a separate, more destructive step—not the first thing to try.

Remove a device from Google Home normally

In the Google Home app on Android or iPhone/iPad:

  1. Select the Home that contains the device.
  2. Tap All devices and find the device tile.
  3. Touch and hold the tile, then tap Settings.
  4. Tap Remove device, then confirm with Remove.

Check All devices again to confirm the tile is gone. Google’s current device and Home organization instructions describe this general route. For some cameras and doorbells, select the device and tap More before opening Settings; labels can vary with product and app version. Google Wifi has a different workflow that uses a factory reset rather than the ordinary removal command.

Removing a device from a Home disconnects it from that Home’s members and, for supported device types, unlinks it from the Google Account. It does not universally erase the device’s local configuration. If you are selling, returning, giving away, or transferring hardware, remove it in the app and then follow the product’s reset instructions unless Google documents an exception. See Google’s guidance on Seamless Setup devices and moving or leaving devices.

If “Remove device” is missing

Check the Home, account, and app

  • Switch Homes. The app can contain more than one Home. Choose the one where the device was set up.
  • Search All devices. A device may not appear in Favorites or the room you expect, and duplicate tiles can have similar names.
  • Check the signed-in Google Account. Use the account that manages the Home or originally added the device. If you are not a member, ask a Home manager to check the device and permissions; controls may depend on the product and role.
  • Check the Nest app too. Some Nest products and older setups are managed there rather than entirely in Google Home. Google lists products and management details in its Nest app guide.
  • Update Google Home. Then force-close and reopen it, wait for the list to refresh, and try again. If the account or Home recently changed, force-close and reopen both Home and Nest apps; Google recommends this after some account changes.

If the account state still looks wrong, signing out and back in may help. Reinstalling the app is a later option, not a device reset: it may require signing in again and does not itself erase the hardware or clear every cloud association. Google’s Nest account FAQs cover app-list refreshes after account changes.

If Google Home says “Something went wrong”

There is no single fix for this message. Check whether you are a member of the Home where the device was configured and signed into the account with the necessary access. A temporary Wi‑Fi or synchronization issue can also interrupt the action. Close and reopen the app, check the device’s power and network connection, and retry. Google discusses Home membership and wireless troubleshooting in its Seamless Setup troubleshooting guide.

If the tile belongs to a third-party light, plug, lock, or camera service, Google Home may only be showing the linked service’s device. You may need to unlink that service in Google Home and remove the product or account in the manufacturer’s app. The exact controls depend on the vendor; removing one integration can also affect other devices or automations tied to it.

If the device is offline, missing, or already reset

First make sure it has power. If it is a powered device, restart it or briefly unplug it; check the expected Wi‑Fi network and restart the router if several devices are affected. Then refresh Google Home and try removal again. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking power, restarting unresponsive devices, and checking connectivity before escalating.

Keep the app listing and the physical device separate in your diagnosis:

  • You reset the hardware, but its tile remains: remove the stale tile manually in Google Home. For Seamless Setup devices, a factory reset does not automatically remove the app entry.
  • You removed the tile, but the hardware is still configured: removal may not have erased local settings. Reset it using the instructions for that exact model before transferring it or setting it up again.
  • The tile is missing, but the device still has its old setup: if it cannot be found in the correct Home or app, use the product’s physical reset procedure only if you are ready to erase its configuration.

Google explains the distinction between resetting and removing Seamless Setup devices in its troubleshooting instructions.

When a factory reset is appropriate

Consider a factory reset when you are transferring or returning the device, it remains bound to a previous setup, or it is persistently unresponsive and normal removal has failed. Do not reset merely because the app is slow or a tile is temporarily stale. A reset clears device data and configuration and cannot be undone; setup will be required again. For cameras and doorbells, it may also delete video history.

Reset procedures are model-specific. For Google speakers and displays, Google says a voice command or the Home app cannot perform the physical reset; use the hardware controls described for the exact model in its speaker and display reset guide. Examples there include turning off the microphone and holding the top center on a Google Home Speaker, holding the rear microphone-mute button on a Google Home, or holding both rear volume buttons on a Nest Hub. Treat those as examples, not universal button instructions.

For camera and doorbell data consequences, check Google’s camera and doorbell Wi‑Fi guidance before resetting. In a specific camera workflow, Google notes that manually resetting and setting up a camera as a new device may preserve an older historical version in the app; do not assume that applies to every model or setup.

Special cases that use a different removal path

Nest cameras, doorbells, and other Nest-app products

Some Nest products are still managed through the Nest app. Remove them there as well when applicable, especially if the product is absent from Google Home or its account association persists. Google’s Nest product management guide covers cameras, thermostats, Protect, and Nest × Yale Lock. Camera removal and reset can affect video history, so review the product-specific steps before proceeding.

Matter devices

Remove a Matter device from its Google Home tile’s settings. If you are adding it to another Home, Google says to factory-reset it first. Removal can also affect associated settings, automations, or routines. Follow Google’s Matter setup and management instructions.

Google Wifi and Nest Wifi

Wifi devices have a separate reset workflow. Resetting erases network settings and data, and you may need to set up the network again. Google notes that an in-app reset removes the device and associated network data immediately, while a hardware reset can leave app or cloud data visible temporarily. Use the current Google Wifi reset instructions for your model.

Third-party devices

For products connected through a manufacturer service, remove or unlink the device or service in Google Home, then check the manufacturer’s app for any remaining account link. Reset the hardware using the manufacturer’s instructions if you are transferring it. Google Home’s tile, the vendor account, and the physical device can each retain different parts of the relationship; no single Google-side action applies to every brand.

Moving a device to another Home

If the app does not offer a direct move, remove the device from the old Home, factory-reset it if required, and add it to the destination Home as a new device. Google notes that some devices that cannot be moved must be reset and set up again. Avoid deleting the entire Home to solve a single-device problem: that affects the Home and its other devices and members.

Second-hand device tied to another account

A factory reset does not necessarily clear a previous owner’s cloud-side association or camera history. Ask the previous owner to remove the product from their account if possible. For some pre-owned Nest products—particularly cameras with video history—Google says the device may remain unavailable until the old history expires, potentially up to 60 days, though it can be sooner. The timing depends on product and account state; a reset is not a guaranteed bypass. See Google’s Nest product guidance.

Quick checklist before you try again

  • Select the correct Home and Google Account.
  • Look under All devices, not just Favorites or a room.
  • Update Google Home, force-close it, reopen it, and allow the list to refresh.
  • Check device power and Wi‑Fi if it is offline.
  • Check the Nest app or manufacturer app if the product is managed there.
  • Use a factory reset only when needed, after considering lost settings and camera history.
  • If transferring a device, confirm its old Home, account, and vendor associations are cleared before adding it elsewhere.

Contact Google for Home membership, Google/Nest account, migration, or Google device association problems. Contact the manufacturer for vendor-account ownership, product-specific reset steps, or a third-party integration that remains linked.
