If holding Backspace removes one character and then stops, first turn off Filter Keys. In Windows 11, press Windows + U, open Keyboard, and switch Filter keys off. In Windows 10, go to Settings → Ease of Access → Keyboard and turn off Use Filter Keys. Then test in Notepad. A single tap deleting one character is normal; the problem is when a held key or rapid repeated presses do not repeat as expected.
If Filter Keys is already off, check Windows’ repeat delay and repeat rate, then compare behavior across apps and with the On-Screen Keyboard. These checks help distinguish an accessibility setting from an app, connection, driver, or physical keyboard problem.
First, identify what is happening
Backspace normally removes the character immediately before the text cursor. So if one tap removes one character, that is expected behavior. Troubleshooting applies when holding Backspace does not continue deleting after the initial character, or when rapid repeated presses are ignored.
Try the same action in Notepad and in a second simple text field, such as a browser address bar. If Backspace repeats in Notepad but not in one particular app or web page, Windows’ global keyboard settings are less likely to be the cause. If letters, arrow keys, or Delete also fail to repeat, suspect a broader keyboard input or filtering setting rather than Backspace alone.

1. Turn off Filter Keys
Filter Keys is an accessibility feature that can ignore brief or repeated keystrokes. That can make a held Backspace appear to work only once. Microsoft documents the feature and its Windows 10 and Windows 11 settings paths in its Windows keyboard accessibility guidance.
- Press Windows + U to open Accessibility settings.
- In Windows 11, select Keyboard and switch Filter keys off.
- In Windows 10, open Ease of Access → Keyboard and switch Use Filter Keys off.
- If the Filter Keys section offers additional controls, check that options for ignoring brief or repeated keystrokes are not active.
- Open Notepad, type a short line, and hold Backspace. After the repeat delay, it should remove multiple characters.
Windows can toggle Filter Keys when you hold Right Shift for eight seconds. If the problem started after holding that key, check the setting rather than relying on the shortcut alone. If Filter Keys keeps turning on accidentally, turn off its shortcut activation option in the Filter Keys settings, if available. Microsoft lists both Windows + U and the Right Shift shortcut in its accessibility keyboard shortcuts.
Filter Keys is not the same as the separate Keyboard Filter feature used in certain managed Windows editions. Microsoft’s Keyboard Filter documentation covers its edition scope and notes that it is not supported in a Remote Desktop session; that feature is not the ordinary first setting to change on a typical Windows PC (Microsoft Learn: Keyboard Filter).

2. Adjust the repeat delay and repeat rate
If Filter Keys is off, Windows may simply be waiting too long before it starts repeating a held key, or repeating too slowly to seem responsive. Repeat delay controls how long you must hold a key before repetition begins. Repeat rate controls how quickly characters or actions repeat after that delay.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
control keyboardand press Enter. - In Keyboard Properties, select the Speed tab.
- Move Repeat delay toward Short and Repeat rate toward Fast.
- If a test box is shown, hold a letter key to check the result. Select Apply, then OK.
These classic controls are also recommended in a Microsoft Q&A response to this type of repeat problem (Microsoft Q&A). Adjust them moderately: a very short delay and fast repeat rate can erase text or repeat letters faster than intended. Windows normally waits for the repeat delay; repetition is not necessarily immediate.
3. Compare Notepad, another app, and the On-Screen Keyboard
A quick comparison can show whether the problem is system-wide or limited to a keyboard, app, or session.

- Test holding Backspace in Notepad.
- Test in a second field, such as a browser address bar.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard, then use its Backspace key in Notepad. Microsoft lists this shortcut in its keyboard accessibility shortcuts.
- On-Screen Keyboard repeats, physical keyboard does not: Focus on the physical keyboard, its connection, firmware, driver, or vendor software.
- Both fail in Notepad: Recheck Filter Keys and repeat settings, then consider Windows configuration or software that affects input.
- Both work in Notepad but fail in one app: Investigate that app, its extensions, document mode, input method, or session rather than changing system-wide settings.
If the issue occurs only in a browser, refresh the page, try a private or incognito window, temporarily disable keyboard-related extensions, and test another browser. A web editor can handle key events differently from a plain text field. If the issue happens only in a remote desktop, virtual machine, cloud PC, or remote-support session, compare with typing locally on the same PC; remote software can handle keyboard events differently.
4. Check for remapping tools and special cases
Utilities and scripts can intercept keyboard input. If the problem began after a configuration change, temporarily disable relevant tools such as PowerToys Keyboard Manager, AutoHotkey scripts, gaming or macro software, laptop hotkey utilities, accessibility software, or remote-access and virtual-machine tools. If disabling one restores normal behavior, check its Backspace mapping or repeat-related settings.
A remap changes what Backspace does; a repeat problem changes whether holding or rapidly pressing it produces repeated actions. If Backspace deletes a whole word rather than one character, that is a different symptom: check whether Ctrl is held or stuck, compare with the On-Screen Keyboard, and test in Notepad.

If rapid separate presses are ignored but holding the key works, look for a keystroke-filtering setting such as Bounce Keys. Microsoft describes Bounce Keys as filtering unintended repeated keystrokes; exact labels and options vary by Windows version and accessibility configuration (Microsoft Support: Filter Keys terminology).

If another keyboard works normally on the same PC, or the problem follows the original keyboard to another computer, the original keyboard is a stronger suspect.

6. Check the keyboard device only if simpler checks fail
If the issue affects more than one app and remains after the settings and connection checks, inspect the keyboard device in Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and identify the relevant device.
- Open its driver options to check for an update, or uninstall that keyboard device if appropriate.
- Restart Windows so it can detect the keyboard again.
Device names and menu labels can vary by Windows build and hardware. Do not remove unrelated devices. Manufacturer-specific keyboard software can reinstall a custom driver or remapping layer; for a laptop, use the computer maker’s support information for firmware and hotkey packages. Driver work is a later diagnostic step, not the first or most likely fix for this symptom.
When hardware is the likely cause
Hardware becomes more likely if the On-Screen Keyboard works, another physical keyboard works on the same PC, and the fault follows one keyboard. A sticky, loose, cracked, or inconsistent key, liquid exposure, debris, or other keys misbehaving nearby adds to the suspicion. Microsoft’s Surface keyboard troubleshooting guidance treats damaged keys and persistent dropped or repeated keystrokes as possible hardware problems.
Do not spray liquid into the keyboard or force a laptop keycap off. Key mechanisms differ, and removing a cap incorrectly can cause further damage. Consider repair or replacement only after cross-testing points to the physical keyboard.
What a successful fix looks like
In Notepad, a single Backspace tap should remove one character. Holding Backspace should begin repeating after the configured delay and then remove multiple characters. If that works in Notepad but not in one particular application or remote session, keep troubleshooting that app or session rather than treating it as a Windows-wide keyboard failure.
