Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a background image appears on screen but disappears in print preview, the browser is usually applying its ink-saving default—not failing to load the image. Turn on Background graphics (Chrome or Edge) or Print backgrounds (Firefox), then check your print stylesheet. If you control the page, request exact color adjustment with print-color-adjust: exact, while remembering that the user’s print-dialog choice always wins.
Why background images disappear when printing
Browsers commonly use an economy print mode that omits background colors and images to improve readability and reduce ink. That is why a page can look correct on screen and lose its design in print preview. The omission alone does not prove that the image URL is broken.
There are four separate controls to check:
- The browser’s print-preview setting for background graphics.
- Author CSS, especially
@media printrules. - The element’s
print-color-adjustvalue. - Enterprise policy that hides or locks the background-graphics control.
Fix them in that order. A CSS request cannot override a user’s print-dialog preference.
Turn on backgrounds in print preview
Chrome
- Open the page and press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+P (macOS).
- In the print-preview panel, expand More settings.
- Enable Background graphics.
- Check the preview again, then print or choose Save to PDF.
If Background graphics is missing, disabled, or reverts after you change it, an administrator policy may be setting the allowed mode or default. On a managed computer, ask the administrator to review Chrome’s background-graphics printing policies.

Microsoft Edge
- Press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+P (macOS).
- Open More settings.
- Turn on Background graphics.
- Preview and print again.
Edge has equivalent enterprise policies. If the option is unavailable or locked, the policy—not your page—may be enforcing a background-graphics mode.
Firefox
- Open the print dialog with Ctrl+P or Command+P.
- Expand More settings.
- Enable Print backgrounds.
- Set the format to Original, not Simplified.
Firefox’s Simplified format does not allow background printing. If you need the page’s authored layout and backgrounds, Original format is required.
Fix the page with print CSS
Add the rule to the element whose background must remain visible, rather than only to body if the image belongs to a card, hero, or other nested element:
.print-card {
print-color-adjust: exact;
-webkit-print-color-adjust: exact;
}
The default value, economy, permits the browser to remove backgrounds. exact asks it to preserve the crafted appearance. The prefixed declaration improves compatibility with WebKit/Blink versions that still use it.

This is a request, not a command. The person printing can still disable background graphics, and that user preference has priority over CSS. Therefore use both the authored rule and the browser setting when you need a reliable result.
Inspect your @media print rules
Search your print stylesheet for rules that intentionally or accidentally remove the image:
@media print {
.hero { background-image: none; }
.promo { display: none; }
.card { height: 0; overflow: hidden; }
}
Also check for a changed background-position, background-size, z-index, opacity, or clipping dimensions. A print rule can leave the request intact while placing the image outside the printed box or behind another layer.
Keep the print declaration on the same selector that supplies the background:

- WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: Print from almost anywhere in your workspace using your compatible mobile device.

.hero {
background: url("/images/hero.webp") center / cover no-repeat;
print-color-adjust: exact;
-webkit-print-color-adjust: exact;
}
@media print {
.hero {
min-height: 320px;
}
}
Do not use background-image: none in a broad print rule unless removing that image is intentional.
Diagnose the failure in DevTools
- Open Chrome DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I.
- Open the command menu or the Rendering panel.
- Under Emulate CSS media type, select print.
- Inspect the target element’s computed
background-image, dimensions, visibility, stacking order, andprint-color-adjust. - In the Network panel, reload while emulation is active and verify that the image request succeeds before preview generation.
This separates a print-CSS problem from a print-dialog problem. If the image is present in print emulation but absent in the actual preview, return to the browser’s background-graphics checkbox or an administrator policy. If it is absent in emulation too, investigate CSS, loading, or the image request.
Interpret the result
| What you see | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Image appears on screen and in print emulation, but not preview | Background graphics disabled or policy-controlled | Enable the print setting; contact the administrator if locked |
| Image disappears in print emulation only | @media print rule, dimensions, stacking, or color adjustment |
Inspect computed styles and remove the conflicting rule |
| Image fails on screen and in print | URL, authentication, CORS, or load timing | Fix the request and ensure the asset loads before printing |
| PDF has the background but paper does not | Printer driver or device setting | Check the printer’s color/background options separately |
Check image loading, CORS, and timing
- Open the image URL directly and confirm it returns the expected file rather than a login page, redirect, or error document.
- In Network tools, look for 4xx/5xx responses, blocked requests, or authentication headers that are not available to the print process.
- For images inserted or replaced by JavaScript, wait until the image’s
loadevent (or an equivalent application-ready signal) before opening print preview. - For lazy-loaded backgrounds, scroll or otherwise trigger loading before printing, or use a print-specific rule that makes the content available.
- Check that the element has non-zero width and height in print media and is not clipped by an ancestor’s
overflow: hidden.
An image that never loaded cannot be restored by print-color-adjust; fix the request first.
Use a PDF to isolate the printer
With background graphics enabled, choose Save to PDF. If the saved PDF contains the image, the browser and page are working; a paper-only omission points to the printer driver, device settings, or a printer-specific economy mode. If the PDF also omits it, continue debugging browser settings and print CSS.

Enterprise and managed-device policies
Chrome and Edge can be configured by administrators to set a default background-graphics mode or restrict which modes users may choose. This explains a control that is hidden, disabled, or consistently reset. Test the same page in an unmanaged browser profile or personal device if permitted. For a managed workstation, provide the administrator with the browser version, the policy state, and a PDF showing the behavior; changing page CSS will not defeat a policy restriction.

“I added print-color-adjust: exact, but nothing changed.”
Enable Background graphics/Print backgrounds first. The property cannot override the user’s print-dialog choice. Then verify that the declaration is on the element carrying the background and that no later print rule resets it.
“The colors print, but the image does not.”
Inspect the computed background-image and Network response. A print rule may remove only the image, or the image may require credentials that are unavailable during capture.
“Firefox ignores Print backgrounds.”
Switch from Simplified to Original format. Simplified format does not permit background printing.

Quick verification checklist
- Background graphics or Print backgrounds is enabled.
- Firefox is using Original format.
- The target element still has a background in print media.
print-color-adjust: exactand its WebKit-prefixed form are applied.- The image request succeeds without missing credentials or CORS access.
- The element has printable dimensions and is not clipped or hidden.
- A PDF test distinguishes browser problems from printer-driver problems.
- No enterprise policy is overriding the selected mode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does printing a background image require changing the image file format?
No. PNG, JPEG, WebP, and other supported formats can print; the deciding factors are loading, print CSS, and the browser’s background setting.
Can JavaScript force a user’s browser to print backgrounds?
No. A page can request exact color adjustment, but the user’s print-dialog preference and any administrator policy take priority.
Why does a background image look different on paper even after it appears in preview?
Paper output can be altered by printer-driver settings, color management, or device economy modes. Compare with a PDF to determine whether the browser or printer is responsible.
