If your iPad has not updated overnight, first check that it supports the iPadOS release and that Automatically Install is enabled. Apple’s automatic installation is conditional: the iPad should be connected to Wi‑Fi and power, locked, and left overnight. An iPadOS update is also different from apps updating through the App Store, which use separate settings.
First, check which updates are not working
iPadOS updates change the iPad’s operating system. Find their controls at Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates. App updates are handled separately in the App Store settings; the exact menu location can vary by iPadOS version. If apps such as games or office tools are not updating, changing the iPadOS setting will not fix that.
Enable automatic downloading and installation
- Open Settings.
- Tap General → Software Update → Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Automatically Install.
- If your iPad shows separate controls for iPadOS updates, enable both automatic downloading and installation if you want the iPad to handle the whole process.
Apple’s interface wording differs across iPadOS releases. On some versions, Automatically Download appears only when Automatically Install is off. Downloading alone does not install the update: it leaves installation for you to start later. Apple describes automatic installation as an overnight process when the iPad is charging, connected to Wi‑Fi, and locked. A notification may appear before installation. Enabling the setting does not promise an immediate update. The iPad may need to download the software first, and it may wait for a suitable overnight period. For more detail, see Apple’s iPad update guide.

If no update appears
Open Settings → General → Software Update. This screen shows the installed version and whether an update is available. If none is offered, check these possibilities:
- Your model does not support that release. Go to Settings → General → About to identify your iPad, then compare it with Apple’s compatibility list for the specific iPadOS release you want. Compatibility changes by release: for example, Apple’s iPadOS 26 list includes iPad 8th generation and later, while its iPadOS 18 list includes iPad 7th generation and later. Do not use one release’s list as a promise of support for another. See Apple’s iPadOS 26 compatibility information and its iPadOS 18 information.
- The iPad is already current for its model. An older iPad can be up to date with the newest software Apple offers for it while being unable to install a newer major release.
- An administrator controls updates. School- and work-owned iPads can have update delays or restrictions. Check Settings → General → VPN & Device Management if that section is present. Do not try to bypass an organization’s policy; ask its administrator whether an update is available and when it can be installed.
Organizations can manage automatic update behavior and defer updates on supervised devices, as described in Apple’s deployment documentation.

If the update does not download
- Check that Wi‑Fi really works. Open Safari and load a few websites. A network may show as connected but still require you to sign in through a captive portal, as on some hotel or school networks.
- Try a different Wi‑Fi network. Workplace, school, or public networks may filter traffic needed to reach Apple’s update servers. Cellular service alone may not meet the update’s Wi‑Fi requirement.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy if you use one and are permitted to do so. These connections might interfere with reaching update servers; they are not a problem in every case.
- Restart the iPad and check again at Settings → General → Software Update. Avoid starting other large downloads while troubleshooting.
- Check available storage using the steps below.
These checks are useful for messages such as “Unable to Check for Update,” “Unable to Download,” or a notice that a Wi‑Fi connection is required. Apple recommends trying again and, if needed, using another network; its update troubleshooting guide covers server and download problems.
If it downloaded but will not install
Confirm that Automatically Install is on—not just automatic downloading—and leave the iPad connected to Wi‑Fi and power, locked overnight. If it still fails, a downloaded installer may be stuck or damaged. Apple recommends removing it and downloading it again:

- Open Settings → General → iPad Storage.
- Find the downloaded iPadOS update in the list and tap it.
- Tap Delete Update. Make sure you selected the update package, not a personal file.
- Restart the iPad.
- Return to Settings → General → Software Update and download the update again.
Deleting the installer package does not delete your personal files, but the iPad will need to download the software again. This is a recovery step for repeated failures, not a guaranteed fix.
Free up storage without guessing a required amount
Apple does not give one free-space figure that applies to every update and iPad. The amount needed can vary. To see what is using space, open Settings → General → iPad Storage. Review large apps, videos, downloads, and message attachments. You can delete items you no longer need or use Offload Unused Apps where appropriate. Offloading removes an app while preserving the option to download it again, but locally stored content or offline downloads may need to be restored. Then return to Software Update and try again. Install the update manually
If you need the update now, or automatic installation has not happened, open Settings → General → Software Update. If an update is offered, tap Download and Install, follow the prompts, and enter your passcode if asked. Keep the iPad connected to power while it downloads and installs. Apple says updating to the latest iPadOS leaves data and settings unchanged, but it is still prudent to back up the iPad before troubleshooting or installing a major update.
Use a computer if wireless updating keeps failing
A computer is a practical alternative if the iPad cannot download or verify an update over Wi‑Fi.

Mac with macOS Catalina or later
- Connect the iPad to the Mac with a cable and unlock it if prompted.
- Open Finder and select the iPad in the sidebar.
- On the General tab, click Check for Update.
- If an update is offered, click Update and follow the prompts.
Windows PC or Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier
- Connect the iPad and open the latest available version of iTunes.
- Select the iPad, then open Summary.
- Click Check for Update, then Update if offered.
For current Macs, Finder—not iTunes—is the normal route. Apple’s computer update instructions cover both options.
If the progress bar appears stuck
Update time depends on the update’s size and how many files are on the iPad, so a slow-moving progress bar is not automatically a failure. Keep the iPad connected to power. If it loses power, reconnect it and turn it on so the update or restore can continue. Do not repeatedly force-restart it during a normal update. If the Apple logo remains on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, follow Apple’s recovery guidance rather than improvising a reset.
What different symptoms usually mean

When to contact Apple
If the update still fails after checking compatibility, network, storage, and the downloaded installer—and especially if a computer cannot recognize the iPad or it remains stuck—use Apple’s recovery instructions or contact Apple Support. A factory reset is not a routine first fix; do not erase the iPad unless you have a verified backup and Apple’s guidance indicates it is appropriate.

iPadOS can install some system-file updates automatically without changing the main iPadOS version shown in Software Update. Security-related updates may also appear as separate controls depending on the version. These can be useful, but they are not a substitute for installing a full iPadOS update when one is available for your model.
