If AutoFill stopped suggesting passwords, passkeys, credit cards, addresses, or verification codes, first identify which type is failing. On iPhone, password and passkey AutoFill is controlled in Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords. On Mac, Safari’s form settings are under Safari → Settings → AutoFill, while system password providers are under System Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords.
Use the diagnostic steps below in order. They check the credential and reversible settings before any risky action involving iCloud Keychain.
First identify what is not filling

Password AutoFill being enabled does not automatically enable credit-card or contact AutoFill. Passkeys also share some AutoFill controls with passwords but remain a different credential type.
Fix AutoFill on an iPhone running iOS 26
1. Confirm that the credential exists
- Open the Passwords app.
- Tap All and search for the website or app.
- Open the result and check the username, password, passkey, or verification-code details.
- Check whether the item is in a shared password group or Recently Deleted.
If the entry is not present, AutoFill has nothing to insert. Check alternate domains such as login.example.com and accounts.example.com, and confirm the credential is not stored in a third-party manager. Do not delete entries and recreate them as a first step; a deletion can synchronize to your other devices.

2. Enable the correct password provider
- Open Settings.
- Tap General → AutoFill & Passwords.
- Turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys.
- Make sure Passwords is selected, or enable the third-party provider that actually contains the credential.
iPhone can use Apple Passwords and supported third-party password providers. Apple says up to three password apps can be used for AutoFill, but multiple providers can make the expected suggestion harder to find. Temporarily disable competing providers while testing.
3. Check iCloud Passwords synchronization
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud → Passwords.
- Turn on Sync this iPhone.
Confirm that the iPhone uses the same Apple Account as your Mac and other devices. iCloud Keychain requires current software and two-factor authentication for setup. Its credentials synchronize separately from ordinary iCloud backup, so restoring an iPhone from a backup does not by itself restore Keychain items when synchronization is disabled or incomplete.

4. Check Safari settings for cards and contact information
For credit cards, go to Settings → Apps → Safari → AutoFill and enable Credit Cards. On a recognized payment field, tap the field and look for AutoFill Credit Card above the keyboard.
For addresses and contact details, go to Settings → Apps → Safari → AutoFill, turn on Use Contact Info, and select My Info. Open your contact card and make sure it contains the required email address, phone number, street address, or ZIP code. Missing contact data cannot be filled automatically.

5. Leave Private Browsing and authenticate
Switch Safari to a normal tab group. Apple specifically says Safari does not save account names and passwords while Private Browsing is active. A dark or black Safari interface on iPhone can indicate that Private Browsing is selected.
When you tap a login field, look for the Password AutoFill suggestion or key icon. If it is not immediately shown, tap Other Passwords and select the account. Face ID may be required; if biometric authentication fails or is canceled, use the device passcode.
6. Test another website
Try a second site with a conventional username-and-password form. If AutoFill works there, the original website may block password saving, use unusual field labels, split its login across pages, embed the form in an iframe, or use a different sign-in domain. That is not necessarily an iPhone-wide failure.
Fix AutoFill on a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26
1. Check the Passwords app
Open Passwords, unlock it with Touch ID or your Mac login password, and search for the website or app. Check the exact domain, shared groups, Recently Deleted, and entries marked as never saved. If a credential is present only in a third-party manager, enable that manager instead of looking for it in Apple Passwords.

- Open Safari.
- Choose Safari → Settings.
- Click AutoFill.
- Enable the categories you need: Using information from my contacts, Usernames and passwords, Credit cards, and Other forms.
Usernames and passwords controls password filling in Safari. It is separate from the Credit cards setting.

3. Check the system provider
Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords. Confirm that the intended provider—Apple Passwords or a third-party manager—is enabled.
This system setting is not the same as Safari’s AutoFill panel. A third-party provider can be enabled or disabled at the system level even when Safari’s own settings look correct.

4. Turn on iCloud Passwords synchronization
- Open Apple menu → System Settings.
- Click your name → iCloud → Passwords.
- Turn on Sync this Mac.
Leave the Mac connected to the internet and powered on while synchronization completes. Verify the same Apple Account and pending system updates on both devices.
5. Check Touch ID and Private Browsing
If Touch ID is available, open System Settings → Touch ID & Password and enable Use Touch ID for autofilling passwords. Touch ID is optional: the Mac login password can be used. A MacBook with its built-in display closed and an external display connected may require the account password instead of Touch ID.
Close Private Browsing windows and test in a regular Safari window. Then try a second website to separate a Mac setting problem from a site-specific form problem.

When passwords appear on one device but not the other
- Confirm both devices use the same Apple Account.
- Enable Sync this iPhone and Sync this Mac in their respective iCloud Passwords settings.
- Install pending iOS, macOS, Safari, and password-manager updates.
- Connect both devices to the internet and leave them powered on.
- Check Apple’s System Status for an iCloud-related outage.
- Restart both devices and test again.
Do not turn off iCloud Keychain on every device casually. Apple warns that doing so can remove the Keychain from the cloud, particularly if local items are also deleted. Signing out of iCloud, resetting Keychain, or deleting entries belongs only in an advanced recovery process after credentials have been verified and protected elsewhere.

Check the Passwords entry for a different login domain or a never saved status. The website may have changed its authentication system, use a third-party identity provider, deliberately prohibit saving, or expose fields Safari cannot identify.
Compare the same account in:
- A normal Safari window.
- A second conventional website.
- Another browser, if installed.
- The site’s native app, if available.
If AutoFill works elsewhere, do not reset iCloud Keychain to fix that one site. Use the Passwords app to copy the username or password manually, or contact the website owner about its login form.
Apple notes that Safari may not recognize poorly marked or unusual username, password, card, or form fields. Its Safari AutoFill documentation explains these limitations.

The app may use custom login fields or lack a correct association with its website. An app-specific failure does not prove that Apple Passwords or iCloud Keychain is broken.

- Update the app.
- Open the service in Safari and sign in there.
- Use the Passwords app for manual copying if necessary.
- Reinstall the app only after confirming the credential is safely stored.
- Contact the app developer if AutoFill fails only inside that app.

Fix a third-party password manager
- Update the manager’s app.
- Unlock its vault and confirm the entry exists there.
- Enable it under iPhone Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords or Mac System Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords.
- Enable its Safari or other-browser extension where the manager requires one.
- Temporarily disable competing providers.
- Test the manager’s own app, then Safari.
Credential-provider extensions supply credentials only after you authorize the fill. A provider may show the matching website and username without exposing the password until authentication is completed. See Apple’s credential-provider extension documentation.
Consider switching managers only if you need Windows or Android support, multiple-browser coverage, family or business administration, or a separate vault. If Apple Passwords meets your needs, repairing its settings is safer and simpler than adding another provider.
What to do when the normal fixes fail
At this point, recheck the scope of the failure:
- Every site and app fails: investigate AutoFill provider settings, authentication, and iCloud synchronization.
- Only Safari fails: inspect Safari AutoFill categories, Private Browsing, and extensions.
- Only one device fails: compare its Apple Account, sync setting, updates, and provider.
- Only one category fails: check the separate card, contact, or verification-code setting.
- Only one app or site fails: treat it as a compatibility or implementation problem first.
Contact Apple Support for system-wide AutoFill or iCloud synchronization failures, the password-manager vendor for provider failures, the app developer for app-only failures, and the website owner for a broken or deliberately blocked login form.
Verification-code AutoFill is separate from password filling. When a code arrives by SMS or email, check the keyboard suggestion bar. If codes disappear unexpectedly, review the Delete After Use option under AutoFill & Passwords.
