First identify which direction is failing: you cannot hear other people, they cannot hear you, or both. Check mute controls and connections, then choose the right microphone and speaker in Discord’s User Settings → Voice & Video (desktop/browser) or avatar → gear → Voice (mobile). Use Discord’s mic test where available, then check operating-system or browser permissions. The steps below help isolate whether the cause is Discord, your device, or the connection.
Identify the audio problem
Before changing settings, note which of these describes what is happening:
- You cannot hear other people.
- Other people cannot hear you.
- Your microphone or headphones do not appear as an available device.
- You hear Discord notifications but not voices.
- Discord is silent, or sound cuts out, crackles, or becomes robotic.
- The problem happens only with Bluetooth, in a browser, in the desktop app, or during screen sharing.
- The problem occurs only in one server, channel, call, or with one participant.
This distinction matters: a microphone permission cannot fix a playback-device problem, and reinstalling Discord will not fix a server mute.

Try these checks first
- Check Discord mute and deafen. Make sure you are not muted or deafened. If you cannot hear one person, check whether their individual volume is turned down or they are muted for you.
- Check physical controls. Verify the headset’s mute switch, speaker power, and system volume. Unplug and reconnect USB or 3.5-mm equipment; try another USB port if available.
- Check Bluetooth. Confirm the headset is paired, connected, and selected for playback. If it is also connected to another device, disconnect it there as a test.
- Test the devices elsewhere. Try the microphone and headphones in another app. If the operating system cannot detect or use the microphone, fix that before troubleshooting Discord.
- Select devices explicitly in Discord. Open User Settings → Voice & Video and choose the intended microphone under Input Device and headphones or speakers under Output Device. Explicit selection is useful when several devices or virtual audio tools are present.
- Check input mode. Temporarily switch to Voice Activity to rule out Push to Talk being active without its key being pressed.
- Run the mic test. Use Mic Test or Let’s Check if shown. Discord’s voice and video guide describes the test and settings; controls may vary by platform and app version.
If the test fails, Discord is not receiving usable microphone audio. Check device selection, mute, permission, and operating-system detection. If it succeeds but people still cannot hear you, investigate input mode, call or channel state, and connection instead.

If you cannot hear anyone
- In User Settings → Voice & Video, select the intended Output Device and raise Discord’s output volume.
- Check the operating system’s active playback device and master volume. A monitor, USB headset, laptop speakers, and Bluetooth headphones can all compete as outputs.
- Check the system’s app-specific volume mixer to make sure Discord is not muted or turned down.
- Try another output device. If sound works there, the first device’s connection, selection, or settings are implicated.
- If you hear some participants but one is very quiet, check that person’s individual volume in the voice-channel participant list. If only one channel or server is affected, compare with another call before changing system-wide settings.
Discord’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the operating system, audio drivers, and Discord output selection when voices cannot be heard.
If nobody can hear you
- Check the headset’s hardware mute and Discord’s mute state.
- Select the correct microphone under Input Device; do not rely on Default when multiple microphones are connected.
- Run Discord’s mic test. If it receives no signal, check whether the operating system detects the microphone and whether Discord has microphone access.
- Switch temporarily from Push to Talk to Voice Activity, then test again.
- Raise the system input level if the microphone signal is too low, and try the microphone in another app.
- If possible, test a different microphone. This helps distinguish a Discord setting from a device or connection fault.
Discord’s guidance for audio input and voice issues also calls out device selection, hardware mute, input mode, computer access, and drivers.
Windows: check microphone access, detection, and output
Allow microphone access
On Windows, open Start → Settings → Privacy → Microphone (the label or layout can vary by Windows version). Enable microphone access for the device, access for apps, and access for desktop apps. Discord may be treated as a desktop app rather than appearing as a separately named Store app. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide explains these permissions.

Open Start → Settings → System → Sound → Input, select the microphone, and choose Start test. Speak normally, stop the test, and play the recording. If Windows cannot record a sample, focus on the connection, device, permissions, or driver before changing Discord settings.

Select the playback device and check detection
Use the taskbar speaker control to select the intended output. If Windows does not detect a microphone or headset, reconnect it, try another port, check whether it is disabled, and look for an audio-driver update from your computer or device manufacturer. Microsoft recommends driver reinstallation when Windows does not detect the microphone; avoid relying on generic third-party driver-updater utilities. See Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That date does not mean every Windows 10 audio fault has the same cause, but it does mean Microsoft no longer provides routine support updates for that operating system.
macOS: allow microphone access and verify output
On macOS Ventura or later, open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and allow Discord or the browser you use. On macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, or Mojave, use Apple menu → System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Microphone. Reopen the app after changing access. Apple documents these steps in its microphone permission guide.
Microphone access controls input only. If you can speak but cannot hear others, select the right output in Discord and in macOS sound settings. External microphones and audio interfaces may also need compatible manufacturer software.

Discord in a browser: check site permission
When using Discord in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, allow microphone access for the Discord website in that browser’s site permissions, then reload the page. Confirm that the operating system’s selected microphone is the one you intend to use. Keep the browser current and test the desktop app, or another supported browser, to see whether the fault follows one client. Discord’s voice troubleshooting guide links to browser-specific permission instructions; browser menus differ.
iPhone, iPad, and Android: check permissions, settings, and connection
In the Discord app, open avatar → gear → Voice. Review the available input mode, device, volume, and voice-processing controls; the options depend on the phone, operating system, Discord build, and connected audio device. Make sure Discord has microphone permission in the phone’s system settings, and check the phone’s volume and any headset mute.
Update Discord and the phone’s operating system. As diagnostic tests, temporarily disable battery saver and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. A successful switch can point toward a connection difference, but does not by itself establish a Discord service problem.
If audio sounds gated, clipped, robotic, or intermittently silent, change one processing control at a time—such as Auto Sensitivity, Noise Suppression, Echo Cancellation, Noise Reduction, or Automatic Gain Control—and test after each change. Discord recommends trying these controls both on and off where available. On iOS, a cache option may be available at Voice → Developer Settings → Cache Actions → Clear Caches.

Advanced fixes for the desktop app
Reset voice settings
Before resetting, note your current choices or take a screenshot. In User Settings → Voice & Video → Debugging, choose Reset Voice and Video Settings, then reselect your input and output devices and test again. This clears Discord voice configuration, so you may need to restore preferred settings.
Test the audio subsystem
If ordinary device and permission checks do not help, open User Settings → Voice & Video and find Audio Subsystem, if available. Try Standard and Legacy one at a time; restart Discord if prompted or if the change has no effect, and revert if sound worsens. Discord recommends this compatibility test in its troubleshooting guide. The option is not present on every client.
Restart, clear cache, then update or reinstall
- Quit Discord completely rather than only closing its window, then reopen it.
- Restart the computer or phone.
- Clear Discord’s cache only through an option or platform-specific procedure that applies to your device.
- Update Discord, then test again.
- If the desktop app alone still fails, reinstall it using Discord’s official download or the official mobile app store. Reinstalling can repair local client files, but cannot resolve denied permissions, a device the operating system cannot detect, or a server mute.
Discord’s general troubleshooting guide covers restarts, cache clearing, and clean installation. Compare the browser and desktop app before reinstalling: if one works and the other does not, that narrows the fault to the failing client or its local configuration, but does not prove a particular cause.

Confirm the headset is connected to the device you are using and selected as Discord’s output. Some computers show separate Bluetooth playback and hands-free choices, and activating a headset microphone can change the audio mode or quality. The behavior depends on the headset and operating system, so compare with wired or USB audio if possible rather than assuming one Bluetooth setting will fix every model.

If voice chat works but screen-share audio does not
Treat stream audio separately from microphone and call audio. Restart Discord and the device, confirm the intended app or window is being shared, and check screen-recording or screen-sharing permissions. On desktop, test turning off Hardware Acceleration if stream performance or audio is affected. On Windows, try running Discord as administrator only when a permissions issue is suspected. Some source apps may restrict capture, particularly for protected content. Discord’s voice, video, and streaming guide covers these streaming checks.
Use the result to narrow down the cause

When the issue may be outside your device
If the problem is limited to one server, channel, or participant, check server or channel permissions, server mute, and individual mute before changing drivers or reinstalling. Compare another channel or call. If everyone in a call is affected, a call or service-side issue is possible; local audio tests alone cannot establish a Discord outage.
If you contact Discord support, include your device model, operating system and version, Discord version, whether you use the desktop app, browser, or mobile app, and browser name and version if relevant. Add the names of your input and output devices, screenshots of Voice & Video settings, whether the operating system detects and tests the microphone, and whether another app can use it.
