If your Apple Watch is tapping, swiping, opening apps, or entering a passcode without you touching it, first take it off the charger and your wrist, then clean and dry it. Remove any case or screen protector, restart the watch and paired iPhone, and test again. If the behavior keeps returning after an update and re-pair, or the display is cracked, lifting, or damaged, arrange service: a reset cannot repair a failing screen or touch sensor.
What Apple Watch ghost touch looks like
“Ghost touch” is an informal description, not an official Apple diagnosis. It means the display appears to register taps, swipes, or other touch input you did not make. The watch might open apps, change faces, scroll, activate controls, or enter the wrong passcode. Sometimes the Digital Crown or side button still works even when the touchscreen is difficult to control.
These symptoms do not prove the display is defective. Moisture, lotion, sunscreen, debris, an accessory pressing on the screen, a stuck physical control, or a temporary software problem can all make the watch behave unpredictably. If the problem occurs only while charging, after exercise, or after water exposure, note that pattern—it helps narrow down the cause.
Before troubleshooting, stop unintended input
- Take the watch off your wrist and disconnect it from the charger.
- Move it away from water, steam, sweat, and damp or contaminated surfaces.
- If it is entering passcodes by itself, do not keep trying to use the touchscreen. Repeated incorrect entries can trigger a lockout. If Erase Data is enabled, ten failed passcode attempts can erase the watch’s data.
- Check for cracks, screen separation, unusual heat, or signs of impact or liquid damage. If the screen is lifting or the case seems swollen, stop using and charging the watch. Do not press the screen down, heat, puncture, or open it; seek service.
1. Clean and dry the watch
Sweat, water, lotion, sunscreen, soap, and debris can interfere with reliable touch input. Apple advises turning off the watch, removing it from its charger, and wiping the display and exterior with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth. If needed, lightly dampen the cloth with fresh water, then dry the watch thoroughly. Do not spray liquid into openings.

Avoid compressed air, external heat, abrasives, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, soaps, and other cleaning products. Apple’s cleaning instructions include model-specific details; do not interpret them as permission to submerge a damaged watch or deliberately expose it to water. Water resistance is not permanent, and a wet watch may not behave normally while its display is being touched.
If the Digital Crown seems stuck or intermittent, debris around it may be a separate issue from touchscreen ghost touch. Apple gives specific Digital Crown cleaning guidance, including when rinsing the crown is appropriate. Follow that guidance for your model rather than rinsing the whole watch as a general fix.
2. Remove accessories and test the bare watch
Take off any case, bumper, full-cover shell, screen protector, or adhesive film. An edge that has lifted, trapped moisture or debris, or is under pressure may affect how the screen responds. A case and protector can also fit poorly together. The accessory is not necessarily defective, but removing it is an easy way to rule it out.

If the ghost touches stop, reintroduce accessories one at a time to identify a possible trigger. Do not assume the watch itself is damaged based only on a problem that disappears when an accessory is removed.
3. Restart the Apple Watch and iPhone
A normal restart can clear a temporary software or app problem. The watch must be off its charger to restart:

- Press and hold the watch’s side button until the sliders appear.
- Tap the power button, then drag the Power Off slider.
- After the watch shuts down, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
Restart the paired iPhone too. The iPhone is involved in the watch’s pairing, app, and software-update processes. Apple’s restart guidance explains the normal and force-restart procedures.
4. Force-restart only if needed
If the watch is unresponsive or you cannot use the normal restart, hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds. Release them when the Apple logo appears, then let the watch finish starting before testing it. This is a recovery step, not something to repeat indefinitely or use routinely. Do not force-restart while a watchOS update is visibly in progress unless Apple Support directs you to do so.
5. Update watchOS
An update may resolve a software-related responsiveness problem if it addresses the underlying issue, but Apple does not promise that an update fixes ghost touch. To check for one, open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone, tap My Watch > General > Software Update, and follow the prompts.
Keep the iPhone and watch near each other, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi, and put the watch on its charger. Make sure the iPhone has sufficient battery and do not interrupt the update once it starts. Apple’s update instructions cover the process.
6. Test for a trigger
After restarting or updating, test the watch in a consistent way:

- 5.Press for more than 10 seconds when starting the machine for the first time
- Leave it clean, completely dry, and without a case or screen protector.
- Open several apps, swipe through the watch face and Control Center, scroll a list, and tap a single control.
- Leave it idle for several minutes, then repeat the test.
- Compare behavior on and off the charger. If the issue occurs only while charging, dry the watch and charger, check that both sit securely, and try another appropriate power adapter and outlet if available. This comparison can help isolate a trigger; it does not prove the charger is at fault.
- Note whether the problem follows water exposure, exercise, a particular accessory, or one app—or whether it also happens on the lock screen and in system menus.
If the fault is intermittent, record a short video of it. A service technician may not see a problem that comes and goes.
7. Unpair and re-pair as a last software step
If cleaning, restarting, and updating have not helped, unpairing and re-pairing can test whether a pairing or software configuration problem is involved. It takes more time and will not repair physical damage, so do it only after the simpler steps. Keep the iPhone and watch close together and make sure you know your Apple Account password.
- On the iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and tap My Watch > All Watches.
- Tap the info button next to the affected watch, then tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Follow the prompts and enter your Apple Account password if asked.
- Pair the watch again and choose to restore from its backup when offered.
Unpairing through the paired iPhone erases the watch and removes Activation Lock. If you have a cellular model and plan to pair this same watch again, choose to keep the mobile plan when asked. Apple explains the process and plan choices in its unpairing instructions.
Unpairing is different from erasing directly on the watch. The direct erase path is Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings; erasing this way may leave Activation Lock enabled. A reset can remove a software or pairing problem, but it cannot repair a damaged touch layer, display, battery, or enclosure. Check that you have a backup before proceeding.
When to arrange service
Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if ghost touches keep returning after the steps above, particularly if the behavior affects the lock screen and multiple apps while the watch is clean, dry, bare, and off the charger. Service is also the right next step if the issue began after a drop or liquid exposure, the display flickers or shows lines or discoloration, a screen is cracked or separating, the watch becomes unusually hot, a physical button is unreliable, or the watch cannot accept a passcode because of phantom input.

These clues can make a hardware fault more likely, but they do not identify which part has failed. Only an inspection can determine whether the display, touch sensor, battery, enclosure, or another component needs service. Repeated force-restarts or factory resets are not a substitute for diagnosis when the symptoms persist.

In the United States, Apple’s standard limited warranty generally covers manufacturing issues for one year from purchase, subject to its terms, applicable law, and exclusions. Accidental damage is handled differently from an eligible manufacturing issue. If you have AppleCare, check your plan’s coverage and service fee; the U.S. fee page lists accidental-damage service fees of $69 for Apple Watch and $79 for Apple Watch Ultra and Hermès models, but plan terms and eligibility matter. Do not assume a newly purchased plan will cover a fault that already exists.
Apple does not publish one universal out-of-warranty price for ghost touch. The final service option and fee depend on inspection, model, coverage, region, and other factors. Apple’s repair page provides service options and says the device must be inspected for a final estimate; authorized providers may set their own out-of-warranty fees. Apple says service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer.
An independent repair shop may be worth considering for an older watch outside coverage, but ask about parts, repair guarantees, and water resistance before authorizing work. Opening a watch can affect its seals and may create other damage; parts quality and outcomes vary. A DIY screen replacement is generally a poor fit for this problem because the watch is difficult to open without specialized tools and can be damaged further.

Can water cause Apple Watch ghost touch?

Will a force restart fix ghost touch permanently?
It may clear a temporary unresponsive state, but it does not prove the problem is fixed. If ghost touches return, continue with troubleshooting and arrange service if they persist.
Should I factory-reset my Apple Watch?
Not as a first step. Try cleaning, removing accessories, restarting, and updating first. Unpair and re-pair only after those steps fail, and remember that erasing cannot repair a physically damaged display.
What if ghost touch happens only while charging?
Take the watch off the charger, dry the watch and charging surface, and test with another appropriate adapter and outlet if available. Treat this as an isolation test, not proof the charger is defective.

What if I cannot enter my passcode?
Stop tapping while the screen is registering phantom input to avoid repeated incorrect attempts and a possible lockout. Arrange Apple or authorized service if the watch remains uncontrollable.
Is Apple Watch ghost touch covered by AppleCare?
Coverage depends on the plan, cause, and inspection. Accidental damage may involve a service fee; check your plan and Apple’s current fee schedule rather than assuming every touch fault is covered.
