Apple Maps problems have different causes: a missing blue dot usually points to Location Services or GPS conditions, while a blank map or failed search more often calls for checking internet access or Apple’s service status. Start with the symptom table, then try the least disruptive relevant fix before resetting settings.

What is failing? Start here
Blue dot is missing or inaccurate Check Location Services, Maps permission, Precise Location, date and time, and GPS visibility.
Blank map, endless loading, or search failure Check Apple System Status, then test Wi-Fi or cellular data and any VPN or filtering.
Route will not calculate Check internet access, destination details, and whether the feature is available in your region.
Maps works on Wi-Fi but not cellular Check cellular data, selected data line, carrier service, and roaming if traveling.
Directions start but there is no voice Check Spoken Directions, audio volume, Bluetooth, and CarPlay audio routing.
Maps works on the iPhone but not in CarPlay Check the CarPlay connection, vehicle audio, and infotainment system separately.
Maps fails where there is no signal Download the relevant Offline Map before traveling, if the feature is available in your region.
A business, address, or road is wrong Report the map issue; resetting the device will not correct Apple’s map data.

Check whether Apple Maps or a related service is down

Before changing settings, check Apple System Status. If a relevant Apple service is reporting a problem, a device-side fix may not restore it; wait for service to recover and check again. Status can change, so the page is the place to confirm a current outage.

Check internet access first for blank maps, searches, and routes

Maps uses an internet connection for online map data, searches, traffic, and many route calculations. A visible Wi-Fi or cellular indicator does not prove that the connection can reach the internet. Apple’s Maps troubleshooting steps include checking Wi-Fi or cellular data.

On cellular

  1. Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data, depending on regional wording) and make sure cellular data is on.
  2. If the iPhone or cellular iPad has more than one SIM, confirm the intended line is selected for cellular data.
  3. If the status bar shows SOS, No Service, or Searching, address the carrier connection before treating the problem as Maps-only. Apple recommends turning Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds, then turning it off, for these cellular states. See Apple’s SOS, No Service, or Searching guidance.
  4. If you are abroad, check whether your plan and carrier settings allow data roaming.

On Wi-Fi

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi and confirm the intended network is selected.
  2. Try opening a website or using another app that needs internet access. If it also fails, the issue is broader than Maps.
  3. Test another Wi-Fi network or cellular data. If only one network fails, restart its router if other devices are affected and contact the network or internet provider if access does not return.

Apple notes that a device may appear connected to Wi-Fi without having internet access. Its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers additional connection checks.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Check VPNs, filters, and managed networks

As a test, temporarily disconnect a VPN or DNS/content filter if you control it, then retry Maps. A school or workplace network may restrict services; do not delete a management profile or configuration you do not understand. Ask the administrator before changing managed network settings.

Fix a missing or inaccurate blue dot

Maps needs permission to use Location Services. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, turn on Location Services, then tap Maps. Set access to While Using the App or Widgets and turn on Precise Location if accurate navigation is needed. Apple documents these controls in its Location Services and GPS guidance and iPadOS 26 location guide.

  • If Location Services is off, Maps cannot use the device’s location service.
  • If Maps is set to Don’t Allow, it cannot access location.
  • If Precise Location is off, Maps may receive an approximate position rather than the precise position needed for reliable turn-by-turn navigation.
  • Buildings, mountains, vehicle roofs, and other obstructions can weaken or delay GPS positioning. Move to a location with a clearer view of the sky and give the device a moment to update.

Maps can determine location using GPS and other signals, including Wi-Fi and cellular networks. A Wi-Fi-only iPad does not have GPS hardware in the same way as a Wi-Fi + Cellular model, so it can depend more on available Wi-Fi for location. The distinction matters when diagnosing a blue dot that is slow or imprecise; it does not mean every iPad lacks location capability.

Set date and time automatically

Incorrect date, time, or time zone can affect location accuracy and network communication. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically, if available. Apple includes this check in its Maps troubleshooting guidance.

If the control is unavailable or the displayed time remains wrong, check that the device is online and whether Screen Time restrictions or a management profile prevents changes. Set the time zone manually only as a diagnostic step.

Close and reopen Maps, then restart the device

Force-close Maps

If Maps is frozen or unresponsive, open the app switcher. On an iPhone or iPad without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause. On a model with a Home button, double-click Home. Find Maps and swipe up on its preview, then open Maps again. Apple describes this process in its force-close guidance. Force-closing is for an app that is stuck; routinely closing apps is unnecessary and can make them reload their data.

Restart iPhone or iPad

If reopening Maps does not help, restart the device normally. The button sequence differs by model, so use Apple’s instructions for your specific iPhone or iPad rather than applying one combination to every device. If the device itself is frozen, follow the model-specific force-restart steps. Apple includes restarting in its Maps guidance and cellular service troubleshooting.

Check for an iOS or iPadOS update

Open Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts if an update is available for your device. Apple recommends keeping software current when troubleshooting Wi-Fi and cellular problems; see its connectivity guidance. An update may address a software issue, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a network, permission, regional availability, or hardware problem.

Fix silent spoken directions

If the route appears but navigation is silent, check audio controls rather than resetting network settings. In iOS 26, open Settings > Apps > Maps > Spoken Directions and review its volume and playback options. You can also start directions and use the volume control in the Maps interface for quick spoken-direction options. Apple documents these controls in its Maps troubleshooting page.

  • Check that spoken directions are not muted or set too low.
  • Test with Bluetooth headphones disconnected. Navigation audio may be routed to headphones, a vehicle, or another connected device rather than the iPhone speaker.
  • Check the vehicle’s navigation-volume control while a direction is being spoken; vehicle audio controls can be separate from phone media volume.
  • If the map and route work but speech does not, treat it as an audio-routing or spoken-direction setting issue, not a location failure.

Reset Location & Privacy only if permission checks did not help

If Maps still cannot obtain location after you have checked its individual permission, reset location and privacy permissions as a later step. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone (or Transfer or Reset iPad) > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. This does not erase personal content, but apps will need permission again before using location data. Apple documents the reset in its Location Services guidance and iPadOS 26 reset guide.

After the reset, reopen Maps, allow location access, choose While Using the App or Widgets, and keep Precise Location on for navigation.

Reset Network Settings only as a later-stage network fix

If Maps fails online across networks after basic checks, resetting network settings may help when incorrect or corrupted network configuration is the cause. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It is not a universal Maps fix. Apple’s network reset instructions explain what is reset.

  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.
  • Saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords are removed, so you will need to reconnect.
  • Cellular, VPN, and APN settings are reset; your carrier, employer, or school may need to provide settings again.
  • Do not use this casually on a managed device; consult its administrator first.
  • This does not erase photos, apps, messages, or other personal content.

Choose Reset Network Settings, not Erase All Content and Settings. If multiple devices on the same network still have no internet afterward, the router or internet provider may be the underlying problem.

Use Offline Maps when connectivity is unavailable

Offline Maps, available in iOS 17 or later including iOS 26, can provide map information, turn-by-turn directions, and estimated arrival times without Wi-Fi or cellular service, subject to regional and feature limits. Apple says availability varies by country or region. See its Offline Maps support page and iOS 26 Offline Maps guide.

Download a map before you lose service

  1. Open Maps and tap your profile picture or initials beside the search field.
  2. Tap Offline Maps, then Add.
  3. Search for a place or choose Current Location, adjust the area, and tap Download.

You can also search for a location, open its place card, and tap Download when the option appears. Offline maps use device storage, do not sync across devices, and do not guarantee current traffic information. The relevant area must be downloaded in advance; coverage and available functions vary by region.

Check offline-map settings

In Maps > profile picture or initials > Offline Maps, manage Automatic Updates, Optimize Storage, download preferences, and Only Use Offline Maps. Apple says Automatic Updates is on by default for downloaded maps. If searches or routes fail despite a download, confirm that the selected offline area covers the destination and that Only Use Offline Maps is not limiting online behavior unexpectedly.

Troubleshoot problems that happen only in CarPlay

First test the same route in Maps on the iPhone. If it works there but not through CarPlay, focus on the connection or vehicle audio. Apple says CarPlay turn-by-turn directions require an internet-connected iPhone and Location Services; see the iOS 26 CarPlay directions guide.

  • Confirm the iPhone has internet access and Location Services is on.
  • Check the wired or wireless CarPlay connection and confirm Maps is available in the CarPlay app list.
  • Check the car’s audio source and navigation-volume control.
  • Restart the iPhone and vehicle infotainment system. Remove and reconnect the CarPlay pairing only if simpler checks fail.

If Maps works on the iPhone and the issue remains confined to one vehicle, the vehicle’s connection or infotainment system is more likely than a general Maps problem.

Report an incorrect address, road, or business

If Maps itself loads and navigates but its map information is wrong, report the place or road issue instead of resetting the iPhone. Apple’s Maps support page directs users to report issues or add missing places. For an eligible business listing, search for the business in Maps, select the correct location, scroll to the bottom, and choose Claim This Place if available. Follow Apple Business Connect’s sign-in and verification process to manage the listing.
