Most Angular unit-test failures in Visual Studio Online—now Azure DevOps—come from Karma running interactively or from the CI agent being unable to launch Chrome, rather than from the test assertions themselves. Configure Karma for ChromeHeadless, force a single non-interactive run, and execute:
ng test --no-watch --no-progress --browsers=ChromeHeadless
Then classify any remaining error as a browser-provisioning, Karma-lifecycle, compilation, or assertion problem. Each class has a different fix.
1. Confirm what your Angular project is using
This procedure applies to projects whose test target uses Karma, commonly with Jasmine. Older Angular workspaces usually expose a karma.conf.js file. Newer CLI workspaces may keep the test options in the Angular workspace configuration.

If the project is already using a different test runner, such as Vitest, changing ChromeHeadless settings will not affect that runner.

2. Use a CI-safe test command
ng test --no-watch --no-progress --browsers=ChromeHeadless
--no-watchprevents Karma from waiting for source-file changes after the initial run.--no-progressremoves interactive progress behavior that can leave a CI job waiting for terminal input or additional work.--browsers=ChromeHeadlessselects Chrome without a graphical desktop.
Angular’s Karma guidance identifies the first two flags as crucial in CI so tests run once and exit cleanly. If your CLI version rejects the --browsers option, set the browser in the test configuration instead of passing it on the command line.
3. Set ChromeHeadless and single-run mode in Karma
Configure karma.conf.js
Merge these properties into the existing config.set object; do not delete project-specific preprocessors, reporters, or plugins.
module.exports = function (config) {
config.set({
browsers: ['ChromeHeadless'],
singleRun: true
});
};
singleRun: true tells Karma to start the browser, execute the suite, report the result, and terminate. Microsoft’s Azure Pipelines guidance pairs ChromeHeadless with this setting for browser-based Angular tests.

Set the browser in newer Angular CLI workspaces
In a workspace that stores test options in angular.json, add or change the browsers option on the relevant test target. The exact surrounding JSON differs by Angular CLI generation, so preserve the existing builder and options:

Angular CLI configurations accept browser names ending in Headless for headless execution. If both workspace configuration and command-line options are present, verify which one your project’s builder gives precedence to and keep one authoritative setting.
4. Add the test to an Azure Pipeline
Visual Studio Online is the former name for the hosted Azure DevOps service. A minimal pipeline checks out dependencies and runs the non-interactive Angular command:
trigger:
- main
pool:
vmImage: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- script: npm ci
displayName: Install dependencies
- script: npx ng test --no-watch --no-progress --browsers=ChromeHeadless
displayName: Run Angular unit tests
Use the Node version required by your project before npm ci. Keep the pipeline’s install and test commands deterministic: a lockfile should be present, and the command should target the same Angular project you run locally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify the agent can provide a browser
A headless flag changes how Chrome displays; it does not install Chrome. A browser-launch error means the selected agent image, browser path, permissions, or Karma launcher needs attention. Check the agent documentation for the image you selected and confirm that a supported Chrome or Chromium executable is available.

If Chrome is installed in a nonstandard location, configure the launcher to use that path through the environment or your Karma configuration. Do not “fix” a missing binary by changing test assertions: the suite has not started yet.
5. Read the failure before changing code
| Log symptom | Likely class | First action |
|---|---|---|
| “Cannot find Chrome,” “no binary,” or process exit 127 | Agent or browser provisioning | Verify the executable exists, is executable by the build user, and is visible to the Karma launcher. |
| “ChromeHeadless has not captured in … ms” or a connection timeout | Browser launch or connection | Check the binary path, launcher flags, agent permissions, and resource availability. |
| Tests pass but the job never finishes | Karma lifecycle | Use singleRun: true, --no-watch, and --no-progress. |
| Angular compilation, TypeScript, or template diagnostics | Build or test source | Reproduce with the same command locally and fix the reported project error. |
| Jasmine expectation failures | Test behavior | Inspect the failing spec and application code; browser settings are not the cause of an assertion mismatch. |
| Browser starts, then disconnects or is killed | Agent resources or sandbox policy | Review memory, process limits, and the agent’s security restrictions before changing timeouts. |
This separation saves time: launch and connection messages occur before meaningful assertions, while assertion and compilation messages indicate that Karma did start the test workload.
6. Troubleshoot common ChromeHeadless launch problems
The binary is missing or has the wrong path
Install or select an agent image that contains a supported Chrome/Chromium executable, then expose its path to Karma if necessary. Print the path and executable permissions in a diagnostic pipeline step. A successful local run does not prove the hosted agent has the same browser installation.

Chrome starts but cannot connect
Check that the launcher is actually ChromeHeadless, not Chrome, and that no custom launcher overrides the browser list. Inspect the complete Karma log for the first launch error rather than the final timeout line.

Some Linux CI environments impose sandbox restrictions. If your organization permits it, a custom launcher can add --no-sandbox, but this reduces browser isolation and should be limited to a controlled build agent. Prefer correcting the agent’s sandbox permissions when possible.
Karma hangs after the suite
Set singleRun: true and invoke the command with --no-watch --no-progress. Also check that a custom Karma configuration or npm script is not starting a second watch process. A pipeline should have one test command whose exit code is returned directly to Azure Pipelines.
The job times out while loading a large application
First reproduce the run with the same Node, Angular, and browser versions. Then inspect whether the browser is being killed by agent resource limits or whether application code waits for an external service. Increase a Karma timeout only after confirming that the browser is connected and the test is genuinely still working; a longer timeout cannot repair a missing executable.

7. Make the pipeline reliable
- Keep
package-lock.jsonunder version control and usenpm cifor repeatable dependency installation. - Pin the Node runtime through your pipeline’s supported task or agent configuration so local and hosted builds do not silently use different runtimes.
- Run the same headless command on pull requests and on the main branch.
- Publish the Karma/JUnit output your project already generates so a failed spec can be inspected without rerunning the job.
- Keep browser provisioning separate from test assertions; failures then identify whether the agent or the application needs work.
There is no universal runtime or failure-rate number for Karma versus another runner. Execution time depends on the suite, Angular build, browser version, and hosted-agent resources.
8. When to consider Vitest instead
Angular documents migration from Karma to Vitest through the @angular/build:unit-test builder. Migration is a separate engineering project, not a first-line response to a missing Chrome binary or a misconfigured Karma launch.
| Decision axis | Repair Karma | Move to Vitest |
|---|---|---|
| Browser requirement | Uses a real ChromeHeadless browser for browser-based tests. | Common defaults run in a Node-style environment; browser-dependent tests may need additional setup. |
| Process lifecycle | Requires explicit single-run settings in CI. | Uses Vitest’s own command and watch controls. |
| Existing compatibility | Preserves current Karma/Jasmine configuration and specs. | May require test, matcher, setup-file, and builder changes. |
| Debugging workflow | Lets you diagnose an actual browser launch and connection. | Can simplify tests that do not need a browser, but browser-specific debugging must be reassessed. |
| Migration effort | Usually limited to configuration and agent fixes when the suite is healthy. | Requires a planned migration, validation, and CI changes. |
Choose migration because the project’s long-term testing model warrants it, not because a CI agent lacks Chrome today.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Visual Studio Online a different test platform from Azure DevOps?
Visual Studio Online was the former name for Microsoft’s hosted Azure DevOps service. The pipeline concepts described here apply to Azure Pipelines.
Does ChromeHeadless test the same DOM as headed Chrome?
It runs Chrome without a visible desktop, but viewport, fonts, graphics, timing, and agent resources can still differ. Keep browser-dependent tests deterministic and specify the viewport when layout matters.
Should I increase the timeout whenever Karma reports a timeout?
No. First determine whether Chrome launched and connected. A missing binary, sandbox denial, or killed process requires environment changes; extending a timeout only helps a connected browser that is legitimately slow.
