The quickest fix is usually to turn off Portrait Orientation Lock. Open Control Center, tap the button showing a lock with a circular arrow, close Control Center, and turn the iPhone sideways. If the screen still stays vertical, test another app before assuming the iPhone is faulty.
First, check whether the app supports landscape
iPhone rotation is app-dependent. Some apps are designed to remain in portrait, and individual menus, the Home Screen, Lock Screen, or media interfaces may not behave like a fully rotatable app. Apple explains the feature at its rotation support page.
- Turn Portrait Orientation Lock off.
- Try rotating the app that is giving you trouble.
- Open Safari or Calculator and rotate the phone.
If Safari or Calculator rotates but the original app does not, the iPhone is detecting orientation and the original app may not support landscape or may have an app-specific fault. Apple specifically recommends testing another app that works in landscape.
Turn off Portrait Orientation Lock
The control locks the phone in portrait; it is not a general “landscape lock.” Turning it off allows apps that support rotation to respond when you turn the iPhone.

iPhones without a Home button
- Open the app where you want landscape mode.
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap Portrait Orientation Lock (the lock-and-circular-arrow icon) so it is off.
- Close Control Center and turn the iPhone sideways.

iPhones with a Home button
- Open the app you want to rotate.
- Swipe up from the bottom edge to open Control Center.
- Tap the lock-and-circular-arrow icon to turn Portrait Orientation Lock off.

If the control is not visible
Look through Control Center for the lock-with-circular-arrow icon. Control Center layouts can vary by iOS version, so use the additional-controls or customization interface available on your iPhone to locate or add the control. Do not assume that the feature has been removed.
If only one app will not rotate
Handle an app-specific problem in this order:
- Close and reopen the app. On a Face ID iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the App Switcher, find the app, then swipe up on its preview. On a Home-button iPhone, double-click Home and swipe up on the app preview. Reopen the app from the Home Screen or App Library. - Restart the iPhone.
- Check the App Store for an update.
- Check for an iOS update if no app update is available.
- Delete and redownload the app only after considering your data. Apple warns that deleting an app can remove data stored locally in it.
- Contact the app developer if the app still behaves incorrectly.
Apple’s general sequence for an app that stops working as expected is at https://support.apple.com/en-us/119876. Force-closing is useful for a misbehaving app, but Apple says there is generally no reason to quit apps routinely to save battery.

If no compatible app rotates
Restart normally
For iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, and later:
- Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
- Drag the slider and wait about 30 seconds for the phone to turn off.
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
On iPhone 6, 7, 8, and iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation), hold the side button until the slider appears. On iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 5, and earlier, use the top button. Apple’s model-specific directions are at https://support.apple.com/en-lamr/118259.
Use Measure’s Level as a diagnostic clue
- Open the Measure app.
- Tap Level.
- Hold the iPhone against an object and rotate the phone.
- Watch whether the Level interface responds and turns green when appropriate. Tap the screen to reset the measurement if needed.
Apple recommends restarting if Level appears stuck. A normal Level response does not prove that every app supports landscape, and an abnormal response is a diagnostic clue rather than proof that a particular sensor has failed. See Apple’s rotation guidance.

Force-restart only if the iPhone is frozen
If the iPhone is unresponsive and a normal restart is impossible:

- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the side button.
- Release it when the Apple logo appears.

Use this decision guide

When to contact Apple
Seek help through Apple’s iPhone support and service hub when all of these apply:
- Portrait Orientation Lock is off.
- The problem occurs in more than one app that supports landscape.
- Closing and reopening the app did not help.
- You restarted the iPhone and installed available app or iOS updates.
- Measure > Level also appears abnormal, or the phone was dropped, exposed to liquid, repaired, or otherwise damaged.
These symptoms may indicate a deeper iOS or motion-sensing problem, but they do not establish that the gyroscope or accelerometer has definitely failed. Apple Support can determine whether service is appropriate. Repair cost depends on the model, damage, coverage, and location; no universal price applies.
