First find out whether the problem is the iPhone or the network: test another device on the same Wi‑Fi, then try the iPhone on a different Wi‑Fi network. If every device is offline, focus on the router, modem, or internet provider. If only this iPhone fails, work through its saved network, settings, and software before considering a reset.
A Wi‑Fi checkmark means the iPhone joined the wireless network; it does not guarantee that the network has internet access. The steps below start with low-risk checks and save the more disruptive reset for last.
Start with two tests
- Try another device on the same Wi‑Fi. If a laptop or another phone also cannot get online, the problem is probably with the router, modem, internet service, or network sign-in—not just your iPhone.
- Try your iPhone on another Wi‑Fi network. If it connects elsewhere, the issue is more likely specific to the original network. If it cannot connect anywhere, investigate the iPhone or get Apple’s help.

Apple recommends testing both another device on the network and the iPhone on another network to narrow down the cause. Apple’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guide has additional device and router checks.

- Open Settings > Wi‑Fi and make sure Wi‑Fi is on. Tap the intended network and look for a blue checkmark.
- Open Settings > Airplane Mode and confirm Airplane Mode is off.
- For a clearer test, check Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions) and turn Wi‑Fi Assist off temporarily. Wi‑Fi Assist lets cellular data help when Wi‑Fi is poor; it does not repair Wi‑Fi.
- Restart the iPhone, then return to Settings > Wi‑Fi and try again. Button combinations vary by model, so use the restart method for your iPhone.
If the Wi‑Fi control is greyed out, restart first and install any available iOS update. If it remains greyed out, or the iPhone cannot join any network, contact Apple rather than repeatedly changing router settings.

If the network is missing or the signal is weak
Move closer to the router and check whether other devices can see the network. Confirm that the router is powered on and broadcasting its network name (SSID). A hidden SSID will not appear in the ordinary Wi‑Fi list. The router may also use an allowlist or MAC filtering that prevents an unapproved device from joining.
If the router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band if it is available. Range and compatibility vary; neither band is always the better choice. If several devices cannot see or join the network, check the router’s status and contact its manufacturer or network administrator about firmware, access controls, device limits, and compatibility. Apple also identifies hidden network names and MAC filtering as possible causes of a network not appearing.
Correct a password or saved-network problem
Wi‑Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Check that you selected the intended network, entered uppercase and lowercase letters correctly, and did not include an accidental space. If the router password changed, the iPhone may still be trying its old saved credentials.
To remove that saved entry and join again:
- Open Settings > Wi‑Fi.
- Tap the More Info button next to the network.
- Tap Forget This Network and confirm.
- Return to the Wi‑Fi list, tap the network, and enter the current password.
Forgetting a network removes its saved credentials, so have the current password ready. If you do not know it, ask the network owner or administrator, check the router’s label or documentation, or use the router provider’s app or admin page. Connected, but no internet? Check for a sign-in page
A blue checkmark shows that the iPhone joined Wi‑Fi, not that it can reach the internet. Hotels, airports, cafés, schools, and other public networks often require a separate captive-portal step: entering credentials, providing an email address, or accepting terms.
Wait for the sign-in page and complete only the information the network reasonably requires. If it does not appear, open Settings > Wi‑Fi, tap the network’s More Info button, and check its login or auto-login options. Disconnecting and reconnecting may prompt the page again. Some networks impose device limits or require staff or an administrator to authorize your device.
Do not enter sensitive account credentials into a suspicious sign-in page or install an unfamiliar “Wi‑Fi login” app. Apple explains how captive Wi‑Fi networks and login screens work.

If other devices are affected, or the iPhone joins but the network has no internet, restart the network equipment. Unplug the modem and router, wait briefly, then reconnect them according to the provider or manufacturer’s instructions. Allow time for the equipment to come fully back online before testing again.

A restart is not the same as a factory reset. Do not factory-reset the router as an early troubleshooting step: it can erase the network name and password, provider configuration, parental controls, and other settings. Check for an ISP outage or warning light, and contact the ISP if multiple devices remain offline.
Temporarily test VPN or security software
A VPN or security app can interfere with internet traffic even while the iPhone remains joined to Wi‑Fi. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends temporarily uninstalling VPN or security software, restarting the iPhone, and testing again—not simply toggling a VPN switch.
Before removing anything, make sure you can restore its configuration. Reinstall software only from its official provider. If the iPhone belongs to a workplace or school, or is managed by one, do not remove profiles or required security apps without IT approval. If the connection works after removal, ask the VPN or security-software provider or your organization’s IT team how to configure it safely.

On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest version offered for that device. Router firmware may also need an update; use the router maker’s instructions or contact its support rather than guessing at settings.

If the iPhone cannot use Wi‑Fi, an update may be possible over cellular or through a computer, depending on the device, carrier, update, and available connection. Do not assume cellular downloading will be offered; use another trusted connection if needed.

Apple normally gives an iPhone a private Wi‑Fi address for each network to reduce tracking. Keep this privacy feature enabled for ordinary home and public Wi‑Fi. On iOS 18 and later, the network’s settings can offer Off, Fixed, or Rotating choices.
If joining fails or a network’s device-identity controls appear to be involved, first update iOS. Then, if appropriate, open Settings > Wi‑Fi, tap the network’s More Info button, and review Private Wi‑Fi Address. Test Fixed or Off only when troubleshooting evidence or the network administrator supports it. Turning it off makes the iPhone use its hardware MAC address on that network. Managed networks may need an administrator to authorize the device identity; ask them before changing the setting. See Apple’s explanation of Private Wi‑Fi Address.
Reset Network Settings as a last resort
If the less disruptive steps fail and the problem appears to be on the iPhone, you can reset its network settings:

- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- Authenticate if prompted and confirm.
This does not erase photos, messages, apps, or other general iPhone content. It does remove saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, VPN settings, and APN settings. Afterward, reconnect to Wi‑Fi, re-enter passwords, and reconfigure any required VPN or network access.
Resetting is more disruptive than restarting or forgetting one network. If the iPhone is managed by a school or employer, ask IT before proceeding; required settings may need to be restored. Do not choose Erase All Content and Settings for an ordinary Wi‑Fi problem. Apple details the effects of Reset Network Settings.
Know who to contact

If only one app or website fails, test other services and try the same service over cellular data. That points to an app, site, or service problem rather than necessarily a Wi‑Fi failure.
