An empty iPhone DCIM folder usually does not mean your photos have been erased. The usual causes are a missing Trust This Computer? approval, a cable or USB connection that does not transfer data, outdated Apple software, or photos whose full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud rather than on the iPhone. Work through the checks below in order—and copy and verify your files before deleting anything.
First, identify what Windows can see
- The iPhone does not appear in Windows: Start with the cable, USB port, device authorization, and Apple or Windows software.
- The iPhone appears, but Internal Storage is missing: Check that the phone is unlocked and trusted by this computer.
- Internal Storage appears, but DCIM is empty: Recheck trust and connection, then check whether iCloud Photos is keeping originals in the cloud.
- Only some photos appear: Some originals may be local while others are still downloading or stored in iCloud. A transfer may also have stopped partway through.
The iPhone Photos app can display an iCloud-backed library that is not all physically stored on the phone. Consequently, DCIM is not always a complete view of everything visible in Photos.
Try the quick fix: unlock, reconnect, and trust
- Disconnect the iPhone from the PC.
- Unlock it with its passcode and keep the screen awake while reconnecting.
- Connect it directly to the PC, without a hub or dock.
- If Trust This Computer? appears on the iPhone, tap Trust and enter the passcode if asked.
- In Windows, open File Explorer > This PC, select the iPhone (it may be labelled Apple iPhone, iPhone, or another device name), then open Internal Storage > DCIM. Wait a few seconds for folders to load.
Trust authorizes the computer to access device content such as photos and videos. If you previously chose Don’t Trust, reconnecting may not bring the prompt back until you reset the permission. Apple’s guide to trusting a computer explains the alert and the reset.

Reset the iPhone’s Location & Privacy permissions, then reconnect and approve the trust alert:

- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Location & Privacy.
- Reconnect the iPhone while it is unlocked and tap Trust when prompted.
This resets trusted-computer permissions; it does not erase your photos or reset the whole phone. You may need to approve the computer and other privacy prompts again. If the alert still does not appear, disconnect and reconnect, restart both the iPhone and PC, and check for Apple software and Windows updates. Apple lists resetting network settings as a later troubleshooting option; do not try it casually, because it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords along with other network settings.
Check the cable and USB connection
A cable can charge an iPhone without reliably transferring data. Use one known to support both charging and data; an Apple-branded cable is not inherently required. Then:

- Connect directly to a USB port on the PC, avoiding hubs, docks, and monitor ports for this test.
- Try another USB port and, if available, another known data-capable cable.
- Check the iPhone’s charging port for debris. Do not force an object into it.
- Try another computer if you can. If the iPhone fails with multiple known-good data cables and computers, a port or device fault becomes more plausible.

Update Apple software, Windows, and drivers
On Windows 10 and later, Apple directs users to the Microsoft Store for current Apple apps. Update Apple Devices if it is installed, along with other Apple software you use, then restart Windows and reconnect the unlocked iPhone. Apple’s Windows software update guidance has the current distribution details; Apple Devices in the Microsoft Store is the official listing.

Apple Devices helps manage and recognize Apple devices, but it is not a guaranteed DCIM repair or a photo-import substitute. File Explorer or the Windows Photos app handles the transfer. Also install available Windows updates. If the iPhone has an error icon in Device Manager, right-click Start, open Device Manager, and inspect Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and related categories. Use Windows’ driver update or reinstall options for the affected entry, then restart and reconnect. The relevant entry and driver can vary by Windows and Apple software setup, so avoid installing a manual driver package based on a guessed name.
Check iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage
If you can see photos on the iPhone but not in DCIM, check whether they are stored locally. Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and check whether Sync this iPhone is enabled and whether Optimize iPhone Storage is selected. Labels can differ on older iOS versions.

With Optimize Storage enabled, the iPhone can keep space-saving versions while full-resolution originals remain in iCloud. That makes cloud storage a plausible reason some items do not show up as ordinary files over USB; it is not proof that the photos are missing. Apple explains the options in its iCloud Photos guide.

Use iCloud for Windows or sign in to iCloud.com with the Apple Account used on the iPhone. Allow syncing to complete and check that the account has enough iCloud storage.
- Want to transfer by USB? If available, select Download and Keep Originals in the Photos settings and allow originals to download before relying on DCIM. A large library can take time and requires enough free iPhone storage; keep the phone on power and connected to reliable Wi-Fi during the download.
Do not turn off iCloud Photos or delete photos as a quick experiment. With iCloud Photos on, deleting an item on one synced device deletes it on the others too. Apple says deleted items can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days, but that is not a substitute for a verified backup. iCloud Photos synchronizes a library; it is not an independent archival backup.

Try importing with the Windows Photos app
If File Explorer’s folder view remains empty or unreliable, use Windows Photos as an alternative interface:
- Connect and unlock the iPhone, then tap Trust if prompted.
- Open the Windows Photos app and choose Import.
- Select the connected device or USB device, choose the items and destination, and start the import.
- Open sample photos and play sample videos at the destination before deleting anything from the phone.
This may help when File Explorer’s view is the problem, but it still requires a working data connection and authorization, and it cannot be assumed to fetch every cloud-only original through USB.
If only some photos appear or an import stalls
Some items may be local while others are cloud-only or still downloading. Windows may also show several DCIM subfolders, and a long copy can fail if the connection is interrupted or the iPhone locks. Try this safer approach:

- Copy a smaller batch at a time, using a direct connection and keeping the iPhone unlocked during the operation.
- If a transfer stops, try another cable or port, or import through Windows Photos. For cloud-only items, use iCloud instead of repeatedly retrying USB.
- Check available space on the PC and, if downloading originals to the iPhone, on the iPhone too.
- Open a selection of copied photos and videos and compare the destination with the iPhone library before removing anything.
Some content in Photos—such as shared or computer-synced items—may not behave like ordinary camera-roll files in DCIM. Do not assume every Photos category will appear there.
When to suspect a hardware problem
If the iPhone does not respond to connection, the trust prompt never appears after resetting Location & Privacy, or data access fails across multiple known-good cables and computers, the cable, USB port, or iPhone may need service. Charging alone does not prove the cable or port can transfer data. If another computer works, focus on the original PC’s software and drivers; if none work, contact Apple or an authorized service provider.
