The fix depends on where the joystick stops working. If it works in Armoury Crate or another game but not in Steam, the problem is usually the Ally’s control mode, Steam Input, a game profile, or another connected controller—not a broken stick. First test the joystick in Armoury Crate, Steam Big Picture Mode, Windows, and a second game.
First, identify where the joystick fails
Use these tests before changing drivers or resetting Windows:
- Armoury Crate: Check whether the sticks navigate menus or respond in the calibration/input tools.
- Steam Big Picture Mode: Open Steam’s controller-oriented interface and test both sticks.
- Windows: Press
Win+R, enterjoy.cpl, open the detected controller’s properties, and test both axes. Windows labels can vary by Windows 11 build; you can also search for Set up USB game controllers. - Another game: Test a game known to support controllers.
Also note the symptom: total non-response, cursor movement instead of character movement, drift, delayed movement, incorrect direction, or small movements being ignored. That detail identifies the likely cause.

1. Select the correct ROG Ally control mode
Press the Command Center button and find Control Mode. Select Gamepad Mode for games that expect controller or XInput-style input. Select Desktop Mode for navigating Windows, where the sticks can emulate mouse controls.

- Set the Ally to Gamepad Mode.
- If the game is already running, close and relaunch it.
- If you launch the game through Armoury Crate, open its individual profile and confirm that it also uses Gamepad Mode.
Armoury Crate SE supports per-game control profiles, but labels and layouts can differ between the original ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, and newer Ally-family models. Look for Control Mode, Gamepad Mode, or the equivalent profile setting. ASUS documents Armoury Crate SE control modes and game profiles.
2. Do not confuse Steam desktop with Big Picture Mode
If the joysticks do not navigate the ordinary Steam desktop window, that alone does not mean they are defective. ASUS says the ROG Ally’s joysticks and buttons work in Steam Big Picture Mode, while the normal Steam desktop interface requires Desktop Mode for mapped controller controls.
- Open Steam.
- Enter Big Picture Mode.
- Test both sticks in the menus.
If they work in Big Picture Mode, the hardware is responding and the issue is probably the Ally’s desktop/game control mapping. Steam describes Big Picture as a controller-oriented interface in its official support documentation.
3. Test Steam Input for the affected game
Steam Input is not universally better enabled or disabled. It can translate the Ally’s controls for games that need a custom layout, but it can also create duplicate or incorrect mappings when a game already supports the controller natively.

- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Open Controller.
- Test the game’s default or recommended Steam Input setting first.
- If that fails, test the alternative Steam Input option.
- Temporarily replace a custom layout with the official or default gamepad layout.
- Restart the game after changing the setting.
Confirm that the game supports gamepad controls. A keyboard-and-mouse-only game will not respond to gamepad joystick commands. Steam notes that unsupported input styles and incorrect configurations can prevent controller commands from working; see its controller configuration guidance.
4. Disconnect other controllers and competing software
Temporarily simplify the setup:
- Disconnect USB, Bluetooth, and wireless controllers.
- Unplug unusual USB input devices.
- Close controller remappers and third-party handheld utilities.
- Temporarily close overlays, monitoring tools, and peripheral software.
- Disable external launcher overlays while testing.
Steam lists XInput emulators, Razer Synapse, MSI Afterburner, screen-capture software, and ASUS AI Suite as examples of software that may conflict with controller input. This does not mean every listed application causes problems on every Ally.
Also open Command Center and check whether the Embedded Controller has been disabled. ASUS documents that this option can be changed when an external controller is connected. After disconnecting other devices, restart the Ally, select Gamepad Mode, and launch only Steam and the affected game. Steam’s recommended conflict checks are described here.

5. Check Steam’s controller detection and calibration
- Open Steam Big Picture Mode.
- Open the settings icon.
- Go to Controller and Controller Settings.
- Check whether a controller appears under detected controllers.
- Use the available input test or calibration option.
Steam’s support pages may use older “Steam Controller” wording, so current labels can differ. Use the equivalent controller-test or calibration option shown in your client. Steam provides related calibration guidance and input-test guidance.

- Not detected: Check Embedded Controller, Armoury Crate, drivers, Windows, and hardware.
- Detected but one stick fails: Check calibration, dead zones, firmware, and possible hardware damage.
- Both sticks work in Steam but not a game: Check Gamepad Mode, Steam Input, the game’s support, and overlays.
- Large movement is required: Check dead-zone settings.
6. Calibrate the sticks and adjust dead zones
In Armoury Crate SE, open the controller or joystick Calibration area. Depending on the model and software version, you may also find response curves, dead-zone, anti-deadzone, and per-game joystick controls.
Calibration is useful when the stick has an incorrect center, reaches only part of its range, or responds unevenly. Adjust the dead zone only when small movements are being ignored:
- A higher dead zone can hide minor noise or drift but reduces precision.
- A lower dead zone feels more immediate but can expose or worsen drift.
- Anti-deadzone can overcome an overly conservative game dead zone, but may amplify unwanted movement.
There is no universal dead-zone number that fixes every Ally. Calibration cannot repair a worn, contaminated, loose, or physically damaged analog module. ASUS explains these Armoury Crate controls in its Armoury Crate SE documentation.

Install updates in this order:
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Open Armoury Crate SE and check Update Center.
- Install updates appropriate to your exact model, including Armoury Crate SE, firmware, chipset, controller, and graphics packages where offered.
- Restart the Ally and test again in Gamepad Mode.
Use the support page for the exact original ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, or newer model. Do not assume that a package for one generation applies to another. ASUS provides model-specific downloads through its ROG Ally support hub.

If the issue began after a Windows reset, clean installation, Armoury Crate removal, or major driver update, reinstall the official ASUS software and drivers before considering a full system reset. ASUS also documents Armoury Crate SE reinstallation when the application is missing or corrupted.
8. Use Windows to separate software from hardware
Run joy.cpl and test both analog axes in the controller properties window. Compare the result with Armoury Crate and Steam:
- Works in Windows but not Steam: Investigate Steam Input, control mode, overlays, and controller conflicts.
- Works in Steam but not a game: Investigate the game profile, native controller support, Steam Input, and any external launcher.
- Fails in Windows and Armoury Crate: Investigate drivers, firmware, Embedded Controller status, Armoury Crate, and hardware.
- One axis is stuck, noisy, or has a severely reduced range: Calibration or physical failure is more likely.
9. Use BIOS only as a later boundary check
BIOS is not a normal joystick calibration environment and cannot be treated as a repair tool. If the problem began after a BIOS update, Windows reinstall, or firmware change, restore the official ASUS software and driver stack first.

ASUS documents entering BIOS by powering on and pressing or holding the volume-down button, or by using Windows Advanced Startup. Follow the instructions for your exact model in the ASUS ROG Ally FAQ. Avoid registry edits, driver deletion, firmware experimentation, or device disassembly as routine fixes.
When the joystick is probably defective
Contact ASUS support or warranty service if:
- The stick fails in Armoury Crate, Steam Big Picture Mode, and Windows controller testing.
- Calibration cannot detect it or the axis never reaches its full range.
- Persistent drift remains after reasonable dead-zone settings.
- Only one physical stick consistently fails across all software tests.
- The problem followed an impact, liquid exposure, or a loose-feeling thumbstick.
- Official drivers and Armoury Crate have been restored without fixing detection.
Check regional ASUS warranty and service policies before opening the Ally. Do not assume that calibration or a software reset can repair physical damage.
