If your Android keyboard types the wrong letters, first check when the error happens. If a different character appears as soon as you tap a key, check the language, keyboard position, and touchscreen. If the letters look right but the finished word changes, check autocorrect. If the problem happens only in one app or with a physical keyboard, troubleshoot that separately.
Try the quick checks below before resetting anything: they can identify the cause without erasing learned words or keyboard settings. Android menu names vary by phone, Android version, and keyboard app, so the paths here are typical rather than universal.
Identify what “wrong letters” means

Run a quick test first
- Open a simple text field, such as a new note or text message. Type
asdf jklslowly and watch whether an incorrect character appears immediately. - Repeat in a second app. If only one app is affected, update and reopen that app before resetting the keyboard.
- If a physical keyboard is connected, disconnect it and test the on-screen keyboard.
- Restart the phone. Wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth, and temporarily remove gloves or anything touching the display.
If the same wrong key appears across apps, the cause is more likely keyboard settings, the keyboard app, or touch input. If the completed word changes after the letters are entered, focus on autocorrect. If the problem disappears when you disconnect an external keyboard, check that keyboard’s layout.

Gboard
With Gboard open, touch and hold the spacebar and choose the intended language. To manage languages, open Gboard Settings > Languages. A typical Android route is Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Languages; labels vary by device. Select the intended layout too—for example, QWERTY—because a language can offer more than one arrangement. Google notes that changing Gboard’s language does not change the phone’s display language. If you keep switching languages accidentally, remove languages you do not use or enable Gboard’s language-switch key under Gboard Settings > Preferences > Show language switch key. If you prefer the spacebar control, avoid swiping across it while typing.
Samsung Keyboard
On a Galaxy phone, go to Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Languages and types > Manage input languages. Enable the language you want, downloading it if prompted. With the keyboard open, use its language or globe control to switch. Samsung’s keyboard support guide covers language management and other controls. Samsung settings can differ by model, carrier, and software version.
If the active keyboard seems to change on its own, check whether more than one keyboard is enabled. On Samsung, the typical default-keyboard route is Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard. For other Android phones, search Settings for keyboard or on-screen keyboard; there is no single menu path that applies to every manufacturer.

Stop autocorrect from replacing the right word
Autocorrect is a likely cause only when the typed characters appear correctly and the keyboard then changes the word. Turn it off briefly to confirm the diagnosis; disabling it can also remove useful spelling help.

Gboard
Open Gboard Settings using the keyboard’s gear icon. If it is not visible, touch and hold the comma key and drag to the settings icon. Review Text correction > Auto-correction, then test typing again. If Gboard has learned a bad spelling, go to Gboard Settings > Dictionary > Delete learned words. Google says learned words are stored on the device and can be permanently deleted with this control; deleting them may also remove useful names, slang, or specialist terms. Samsung Keyboard
Go to Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings and review options such as Predictive text, Auto replace, and Suggest text corrections. Samsung describes Auto replace as entering a suggested word when you tap the spacebar or Enter. You can also remove learned prediction data using Erase personalized predictions. If you want to keep autocorrect, add a correct but unfamiliar word to the keyboard’s personal dictionary or choose the intended spelling from the suggestions. Confirm the keyboard language matches the language you are typing before deleting learned words.
If a tap produces a nearby or incorrect letter
A wrong character that appears immediately after a tap is not usually fixed by turning off autocorrect. Check touch input and keyboard placement instead:

- Clean and dry the display. Turn off the screen before wiping it. Remove moisture and debris; avoid typing with wet gloves.
- Test without the screen protector. A thick, damaged, poorly fitted, or lifting protector can contribute to inaccurate taps, but it is only one possible cause. Temporarily remove it to compare rather than assuming it is responsible.
- Check keyboard size and position. A small, shifted, or one-handed keyboard can make adjacent keys easy to hit. On Samsung, look under Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Size and transparency to resize or reposition it. The reset control restores the original layout. For Gboard, check Gboard Settings > Preferences for available height and layout controls; labels vary by version.
- Test portrait and landscape. If mistaps occur in only one orientation, keyboard placement or a particular screen area may be involved. If the same strip of screen fails in both, hardware becomes more plausible.
Android does not have one universal touchscreen-calibration menu. Avoid treating third-party “calibration” apps as an official fix; use your phone maker’s diagnostics or support instructions if touch input appears faulty.
Restart, update, and clear cache—in that order
If letters lag, repeat, or appear inconsistently, begin with a restart. Then install available keyboard and system updates. For Gboard, search for Gboard in Google Play and update it if an update is available. Google recommends updating, restarting, and clearing cache as part of its troubleshooting sequence. On a Galaxy device, check Settings > Software update and the device’s app-update system, such as Galaxy Store. Update availability and paths vary by device.
Next, clear the keyboard’s cache—temporary files—before considering a data reset:
- Gboard: typically Settings > Apps > Gboard > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Older Android versions may use labels such as Apps and notifications or Storage.
- Samsung Keyboard: open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Reset to default settings to find available reset controls, including clearing cache on supported versions.
On Gboard, you can also try Settings > Apps > Gboard > Force stop, then open a text field again. This can help when the keyboard is frozen or delayed; it will not fix a mismatched language or damaged screen.

Reset keyboard settings only after simpler fixes
Clearing cache is different from clearing storage or data. Clearing Gboard storage/data returns the app to its default state and may remove learned words, personal dictionary entries, layout choices, and other preferences. Try Clear cache first. If you do use Clear storage or Clear data, expect to set the keyboard up again. Google lists both cache clearing and a storage reset in its Gboard troubleshooting guide.
Samsung Keyboard offers more specific controls under Reset to default settings, including reset settings, erase personalized predictions, erase personalized touch-recognition data, and clear cache, depending on the device. Samsung says resetting keyboard settings does not remove downloaded languages; erasing personalized predictions does remove learned prediction data. Read the option description before confirming so you choose only the reset you intend.

Downloaded apps—including overlays, screen filters, clipboard managers, accessibility tools, alternative keyboards, and game overlays—can interfere with input. Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps, making it useful as a test. It is not a permanent fix or conclusive proof of a specific app.

On supported Galaxy devices, open the power menu, touch and hold Power off, then select Safe mode. Samsung documents a button-based method for some models as well; follow its current Safe Mode instructions for your device. Other manufacturers use different steps, so consult the maker’s support instructions.

- The keyboard works normally in Safe Mode: a downloaded app is a likely cause. Restart normally, then remove or disable recently installed or updated apps one at a time, testing after each.
- The problem remains in Safe Mode: an app conflict is less likely. Check keyboard settings and software; if taps still fail in the same screen area, investigate touch hardware.
Switch keyboards as a diagnostic test
If your phone has another trusted keyboard available, try it. If Gboard misbehaves but Samsung Keyboard works, the issue is more likely Gboard’s settings or app state. If two on-screen keyboards produce the same incorrect letters at the same location, suspect touch input or a system-level problem. Switching keyboards is a diagnostic step, not a way to repair a damaged digitizer.
On Samsung, choose the active keyboard at Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard. On other phones, search Settings for default keyboard. Before uninstalling or disabling a keyboard, make sure another keyboard is installed and enabled; Google warns users not to remove Gboard if it is their only input method.
Check a Bluetooth, USB, or tablet keyboard
If the problem occurs with an external keyboard, disconnect it and test the on-screen keyboard first. If the on-screen keyboard is correct, check the physical keyboard’s language and layout. Common differences include QWERTY versus QWERTZ or AZERTY, as well as other regional layouts. A shortcut may also switch the active layout.

A physical keyboard’s layout is separate from the on-screen keyboard’s language settings.
If it happens only in one app
Test in a note or message field before changing keyboard settings. If only one app is affected, update it, force-stop and reopen it, and consider clearing that app’s cache if the option is available. Some password, search, address, or numeric fields deliberately use different input behavior; some apps also use custom text editors or disable autocorrection. Check for an overlay, autofill service, or accessibility tool that affects that app before resetting the whole keyboard.
When to suspect a touchscreen fault
Contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider if the same screen area misregisters taps across apps and keyboards, especially after a drop, liquid exposure, or screen replacement. Other warning signs include ghost touches, duplicate taps, or touch failures outside the keyboard. If the problem persists after a restart and a Safe Mode test—or if other screen controls also fail—continued keyboard tweaking is unlikely to fix a damaged digitizer.
Back up important data, remove accessories for one more test, and use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or support app if available. Then seek support from the manufacturer, carrier, or an authorized repair provider. A factory reset is disruptive, cannot repair physical touch damage, and should not be the first response to mistyped letters.
