“Ubisoft Game Launcher” is the older name still seen in some errors and folder paths; the current desktop client is Ubisoft Connect. There is no single fix for every launcher error. First identify whether the failure is with Ubisoft Connect, the game files, your account, the network, or anti-cheat software. For most Windows PC problems, close the launchers, rename Ubisoft Connect’s cache, and then verify the game files before considering a clean reinstall. Ubisoft Connect is Ubisoft’s current PC client.
Identify which kind of error you have
Use the exact message to choose a starting point. Do not run every fix indiscriminately: repairing the launcher will not correct a wrong account, and clearing its cache will not repair corrupted game files.
- “Ubisoft Connect has detected an unrecoverable error and must shut down”: Start with a full client shutdown and cache reset. If it continues, check permissions and security software, then clean-reinstall Ubisoft Connect.
- “A Ubisoft service is currently unavailable” or another connection error: Check for service interruptions or maintenance first, then test the network, VPN or proxy, firewall rules, and cache.
- “Unable to find the game” or “Ownership authentication failed”: Check that you are signed in to the Ubisoft account that owns or is linked to the game. A client reinstall cannot fix an account mismatch.
- Ubisoft Connect opens, but the game will not: Start the game from the store where you installed or bought it, verify its files there, and check overlays and anti-cheat messages.
- BattlEye or another anti-cheat error: Follow the anti-cheat checks below; it is not simply a launcher-cache problem.
- The client is stuck updating or downloading: Check available disk space, permissions, security software, and network restrictions before reinstalling the client.
These Windows folder and client steps do not apply to PlayStation, Xbox, or cloud-gaming sessions. Legacy Ubisoft games can also have title-specific requirements.

If several Ubisoft games fail at once, a service interruption or client issue is more plausible than simultaneous damage to each game. Check Ubisoft’s official support notices; local repairs will not restore a server-side service. - Exit Ubisoft Connect using its system-tray icon.
- Close Steam or Epic Games if you use either to start the game.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. End any remaining Ubisoft Connect, Ubisoft Game Launcher, Steam, Epic Games, or affected game processes.
- Restart Windows before retrying.
Close the client before renaming or removing its files. Ubisoft Support instructions likewise call for fully closing related launchers before cleanup (cache and security troubleshooting; launcher shutdown guidance).
Rename the Ubisoft Connect cache
A cache reset makes the client rebuild temporary data and launcher metadata. It may sign you out, so make sure you know which Ubisoft account to use. The common install location is C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchercache, but the client may be on another drive or in a custom folder. Search Windows for Ubisoft Game Launcher if that path is absent.
- With Ubisoft Connect fully closed, open the Ubisoft Game Launcher folder.
- Rename the
cachefolder tocache_backup. Renaming leaves a fallback copy rather than immediately deleting it. - Open Ubisoft Connect, sign in if prompted, and try the game.
If the error persists, close the client again. In the launcher folder, rename or remove crash, logs, shareplay, or version.txt only if present. Folder contents vary by client version; do not delete the game’s installation folder. Ubisoft Support has advised clearing cache data, with the possibility that signing in again will be necessary (cache location and cleanup; additional launcher data).

Verify the game files if the client opens
File verification checks the game installation for missing or damaged files and can repair them without downloading the entire game again. Use the store that owns or installed the game:
- Steam: Open the game’s Properties and choose the installed-files verification option.
- Epic Games Store: Open the game’s Manage menu and choose Verify.
- Ubisoft Connect: Open the game’s properties or management menu and choose the available file verification or repair option.
Menu wording can change. Verification repairs game files; it is different from clearing the Ubisoft Connect cache, which resets client data. Ubisoft’s BattlEye FAQ also recommends verifying PC game files and updating the relevant launcher in its troubleshooting guidance. Reinstall the game only if verification fails or the game-specific issue remains.
Test permissions without changing everything permanently
If Connect cannot update or write to its folders, test elevated permissions for the client:

- Right-click the Ubisoft Connect shortcut and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab and select Run this program as an administrator.
- Apply the change, open the client, and test once.
If you start through Steam or Epic, test the launcher and game with consistent permissions. Elevating only one component can complicate access or overlays, so treat this as a diagnostic test rather than a blanket permanent setting. Ubisoft Support has included administrator permissions in launcher troubleshooting (Ubisoft Support guidance reproduced in the Steam forum).
Check firewall, antivirus, and Windows protection
Security tools can block the launcher, game, or anti-cheat service. Check quarantine and blocked-app history for the Ubisoft Connect executable, the game executable, Steam or Epic, and the game’s anti-cheat files. Only allow files from legitimate installations; do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled.
- In Windows Security, review Protection history for blocked Ubisoft processes.
- If the client cannot update or save files, review Ransomware protection and Controlled folder access.
- If a third-party firewall or antivirus is installed, add a narrow exception for the legitimate blocked program only when appropriate. Its settings vary by vendor and Windows edition.
Ubisoft Support has recommended checking antivirus and firewall allowances when startup or connection problems continue (support troubleshooting).

Isolate overlays and background software
Temporarily close or disable one item at a time, then retry. Test Steam, Discord, or Ubisoft overlays; Xbox Game Bar; MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner; RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities; VPNs or proxies; and third-party game optimizers or traffic filters. If one change resolves the problem, update that software or configure a targeted exception instead of leaving unrelated tools disabled. These are possible conflict checks, not a claim that any one application universally causes Ubisoft errors.
Troubleshoot service, login, and connection errors
- Restart the modem or router, then retry Connect.
- Temporarily disconnect from a VPN or proxy.
- Try a different network, such as a mobile hotspot, as a diagnostic test. If the client works there, investigate the home network or ISP rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
- Set Windows date and time to automatic and check firewall permissions.
- As an optional Windows network diagnostic, open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /flushdns.
A DNS flush is a general Windows troubleshooting step, not a Ubisoft-specific cure. Avoid copying fixed Ubisoft IP addresses or making random changes to the Windows hosts file: older regional workarounds may be temporary or change over time (Ubisoft notice on older network workarounds).
Fix ownership and account-linking errors
- Confirm that Ubisoft Connect is signed in to the Ubisoft account that owns the game or was linked when the game was first activated.
- If you launch through Steam or Epic, confirm that the correct platform account is connected to that Ubisoft account.
- Sign out of Ubisoft Connect and sign back in. Clear the cache if the account appears correct but ownership still will not load.
- Use offline mode only if that specific game supports it; some games or features require an account connection or persistent internet access.
A launcher repair cannot transfer ownership between accounts. Avoid repeatedly unlinking and relinking platform accounts, which can complicate entitlement access. Ubisoft’s terms describe account, connection, and online requirements as varying by game and feature (Terms of Use).

Treat BattlEye and other anti-cheat failures separately
If the error names BattlEye, begin with game-file verification and confirm that Windows and the game’s launcher are updated. Check whether security software quarantined anti-cheat files or blocked its service. Ubisoft’s BattlEye guidance also covers service-start failures, permissions, firewall interference, test-signing mode, and corrupted installs: BattlEye FAQ.
Do not permanently disable Windows security protections or remove anti-cheat as a routine fix. If the FAQ’s checks do not address the exact service error, use Ubisoft or BattlEye support for that specific failure.
Clean-reinstall Ubisoft Connect if the client still crashes
Do this before reinstalling a large game when the launcher itself remains broken after cache cleanup. It resets client state; it is not a guarantee about local saves or game detection.

- Uninstall Ubisoft Connect through Windows, then restart the PC.
- Check for residual launcher data and rename or remove it if present:
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalUbisoft Game LauncherandC:ProgramDataUbisoftUbisoft Game Launcher. - Before deleting unfamiliar folders, back up local saves. Save locations and cloud-save behavior vary by game; do not assume launcher cleanup handles every title’s saves the same way.
- Download and install the current client from Ubisoft’s official download page. Prefer the default installation location unless Ubisoft Support directs otherwise.
- Sign in to the correct account, reconnect the relevant Steam or Epic account if needed, and start the game from the platform where it was installed.
The game files may remain in place after a launcher reinstall, though the client may need to locate or repair the installation. Ubisoft Support guidance recommends removing residual launcher folders and installing the latest client from Ubisoft (reinstall guidance).
What not to do
- Do not reinstall a large game before trying file verification and a launcher-cache reset.
- Do not delete the game installation folder while trying to repair Ubisoft Connect.
- Do not download replacement Ubisoft DLLs or modified launcher files from unofficial sites.
- Do not leave antivirus, firewall, or Windows security features disabled.
- Do not apply old fixed-IP or hosts-file instructions as if they were permanent fixes.
- Do not repeatedly unlink and relink Steam or Epic accounts before confirming which Ubisoft account owns the game.
When to contact Ubisoft Support
Contact support if the client still fails after cache cleanup or reinstall, ownership cannot be verified for the correct linked accounts, or a service/anti-cheat error persists after its specific checks. Include enough information to distinguish a client problem from a game or account problem:
- Exact error wording and code, plus a screenshot if available.
- Game title and whether you launch through Ubisoft Connect, Steam, or Epic.
- Windows version and Ubisoft Connect version, if visible.
- Whether other Ubisoft games work and whether a different network changes the result.
- Which Ubisoft and platform accounts are linked, without sharing passwords.
- Recent game, launcher, Windows, driver, or security-software updates.
- DxDiag or launcher logs if support requests them; do not post private account data publicly.
