A failed screenshot shortcut does not necessarily mean screenshots are broken. First identify the device and operating system, then test its built-in capture interface. If the interface works, the problem is usually the key or button combination, an app-specific restriction, or a file saved somewhere unexpected.
Use the section for your platform below. The instructions cover Windows 10/11, macOS, iPhone, Android, and ChromeOS. Linux, managed work or school devices, and manufacturer-specific Android interfaces may require different support.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
- Identify the platform and version. Note whether you are using Windows 10 or 11, macOS, iOS, Android, or ChromeOS. On a phone, record the model because button layouts differ.
- Classify what failed. Did a keyboard shortcut or physical buttons do nothing, did the capture interface open but not save, or can you not find the resulting image?
- Check whether the failure is system-wide. Try the desktop, a browser page, and another ordinary app. If only one protected window fails, the operating system may be working normally.
- Use the built-in capture tool. This separates a bad shortcut from a broader capture or storage problem.
Do not assume that the Print Screen key, a phone-button combination, or a third-party capture app works the same way on every device.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Test Snipping Tool instead of the shortcut
- Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it.
- Choose a mode: freeform, rectangular, window, or full-screen.
- Select New, make the selection, and use Snipping Tool’s save, copy, or share controls.
If this works, Windows capture is functioning and the original Print Screen shortcut, keyboard layout, or keyboard hardware is the likely issue. Try the shortcut again with the correct key labelled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen; on some laptop keyboards you must hold Fn.

Find a capture that was saved automatically
Current Snipping Tool guidance says captured snips are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder. Open File Explorer and check Pictures > Screenshots. In Snipping Tool, open its settings to review automatic saving and the default folder. You can also choose Save As after a capture and select a known location and filename.
Check Windows privacy permissions only when an app is affected
If a particular app cannot access or save to your image libraries, open Settings > Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Settings > Privacy on Windows 10. Review access under Pictures, Documents, or Videos for the affected app. Microsoft says denying library access can stop an app working as expected; this does not establish that library permissions explain every failure of built-in screenshots.
Mac
Open the Screenshot interface
- Press Shift-Command-5, or open Applications > Utilities > Screenshot.
- Choose full screen, a window, or a selected portion.
- Open Options to check the timer and save destination, then capture.

Check where macOS put the file
By default, screenshots normally appear on the desktop. In Screenshot’s Options menu, verify or change the destination. To put an image on the clipboard instead of saving a file, hold Control with the screenshot key combination, or use the thumbnail’s sharing and copy controls.
When one app refuses capture
Apple states: “Some apps, such as the Apple TV app, may not let you take screenshots of their windows.” A failure limited to a protected window is therefore not evidence of a system-wide Mac fault.
iPhone
Use the button combination for your model
- Face ID models: press the Side button and Volume Up together, then release.
- Side button and Home button: press both together, then release.
- Top button and Home button: press both together, then release.
See Apple’s model-specific guidance in Take a screenshot on iPhone. Press simultaneously rather than holding the buttons long enough to trigger shutdown or Emergency SOS.
Locate and edit the screenshot
Open Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. On iOS 26, quick tools appear after capture; on iOS 18 and earlier, a temporary thumbnail appears. Tap it before it disappears to crop, mark up, share, or delete the image.

Android
Try both documented methods
- Open the screen you want and press Power and Volume Down together.
- If that does not work, press and hold Power, then tap Screenshot in the power menu.
Google notes a Pixel-specific behavior for Android 11 and later, while other manufacturers may change menus or gestures. If neither method works, Google says: “If neither of these work, go to your phone manufacturer’s support site for help.” The complete instructions are in Take a screenshot or record your screen on your Android device.
Check Google Photos or Gallery
In Google Photos, open Collections > On this device > Screenshots. On older Android versions without Photos, open Gallery and look for its Screenshots folder. If the image is present there, the button worked and the issue was finding or sharing the file.
Chromebook and ChromeOS
Use the Screenshot key or Screen Capture
- Press the dedicated Screenshot key if your Chromebook keyboard has one.
- Otherwise open Quick Settings and select Screen Capture.
- You can also press Shift-Ctrl-Show windows. On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google specifies Ctrl-Shift-F5.
Choose full-screen, partial, or window capture in the Screen Capture controls. Google’s guide is Take a screenshot or record your screen.
Check Downloads and the capture destination
Chromebook screenshots default to Downloads. In Screen Capture settings, select another folder if you need a different destination. Open the Files app and search by the capture date if you are unsure where it went.

Why a screenshot works in one place but not another
Protected or special-purpose windows
Streaming, payment, secure-workspace, and other protected apps can block window capture. Test an ordinary desktop or browser page. If every other screen works, follow that app’s support guidance rather than changing system settings blindly.
Keyboard and button differences
External keyboards may map Show windows, Print Screen, or Function keys differently. Laptop firmware can require Fn. Phone cases, worn switches, or a changed button layout can prevent simultaneous presses. Use the platform’s menu-based capture method to distinguish a shortcut problem from a hardware problem.
Capture succeeded but saving failed
Check the documented folder, the tool’s destination setting, available storage, and whether the app has permission to access the relevant library. Save a test image with an explicit filename to a folder you can open immediately.

- Restart the device, then test the built-in capture tool before reinstalling anything.
- Try a different screen to determine whether the problem is app-specific.
- Use an on-screen menu instead of keys or physical buttons.
- Check free storage and the destination folder.
- On Windows, review Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting and relevant library permissions.
- On Mac, verify Screenshot’s Options destination and remember that some apps block capture.
- On phones, remove a case temporarily and confirm the exact model’s button combination.
- On managed work or school hardware, ask the administrator whether capture is restricted.
When contacting support, include the device model, operating-system version, exact shortcut or buttons, whether a capture interface appears, where you looked for the file, and whether all apps or only one are affected. For Android, use the phone manufacturer’s support site when Google’s listed methods fail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a website tell that I took a screenshot?
A local operating-system screenshot normally does not notify a website, but individual apps can restrict capture or implement their own detection. Test the platform tool and check that app’s policy.
