If your Roku shows a solid purple screen with an “HDCP Error Detected” message, the first fix is to reset the HDMI connection: unplug the HDMI cable at both ends, power down the Roku, TV, and any connected audio or switching equipment, then reconnect and restart everything. Roku identifies a failed or unsupported HDMI/HDCP connection as a common cause of this error. Roku’s HDCP troubleshooting guide covers the official steps.

Not every purple picture is an HDCP error, though. A pink or purple tint without an error message may point to a different signal or display problem. Start by identifying which symptom you have, then use the tests below to isolate the Roku, cable, TV port, or equipment in between.

First, identify the purple-screen symptom

  • Solid purple screen with an HDCP message: Treat it as an HDMI/HDCP handshake or compatibility problem. HDCP is copy-protection technology used over HDMI, and the connection can involve the Roku, TV, receiver, soundbar, switch, or other equipment.
  • Purple or pink tint without an HDCP message: This is not confirmed as an HDCP error. It may involve the HDMI signal, display settings, TV processing, firmware, or hardware. Use the isolation tests below rather than assuming the cable is bad.
  • Only 4K or HDR content causes the problem: Check whether every device in the HDMI path supports the required 4K/HDR signal and HDCP 2.2. An older receiver, soundbar, switch, or TV input can be the limiting component.
  • Only one app or title is affected: Check the Roku home screen and another app first. A problem confined to one service or title is less consistent with a general HDMI handshake failure; the available Roku guidance does not establish a specific app-only purple-screen cause.
  • The Roku TV’s menus and every source look purple: That points away from an external Roku player as the sole cause. Check another source and the TV’s own menus; the TV or its picture processing may need attention.

Do a full HDMI and power reset

A quick Roku restart alone may not reset the connection between all devices. Follow this sequence to make them negotiate HDMI and HDCP again:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop playback and note which TV input the Roku uses.
  2. Unplug the HDMI cable from both the Roku and the TV or connected device.
  3. If the Roku runs through a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, splitter, or extender, turn that equipment off too.
  4. Unplug the Roku’s power cord, then unplug power from the TV and any intermediary equipment.
  5. Wait briefly. Reconnect the HDMI cable firmly at both ends.
  6. Restore power to the TV and intermediary equipment, then reconnect power to the Roku.
  7. Turn everything on, select the correct TV input, and check the Roku home screen and playback.

If the picture returns but the problem comes back, continue with the tests below. A successful power cycle shows that reconnecting the signal helped; it does not by itself prove which component caused the interruption.

Isolate the HDMI connection

Connect the Roku directly to the TV

Temporarily remove soundbars, receivers, switches, splitters, capture devices, adapters, and wall-mounted HDMI extenders from the signal path. Connect the Roku straight to a TV HDMI input. Roku notes that some HDMI switches do not support HDCP.

If the direct connection works, the bypassed equipment or its HDMI path is the leading suspect. Check its manual for the relevant HDCP and 4K/HDR support, try another compatible input, and check for a firmware update. Do not replace the Roku until you have tested it without the intermediary device.

Try a different HDMI input

Move the Roku to another HDMI port and select that exact input on the TV. If the new port works, the original port or its configuration may be the issue. For 4K/HDR, consult the TV manual: some models support those features only on particular HDMI ports or when a port mode is enabled.

Test with a known-good HDMI cable

Use a short cable if available—Roku suggests a cable shorter than 6 feet for troubleshooting—and make sure it is firmly seated. Test rather than buying an expensive cable on guesswork: a cable that works reliably for the required signal is what matters.

For 4K HDR, Roku recommends a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable or Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable when the included cable cannot be used. A new cable cannot fix an incompatible receiver, switch, TV port, or display, so retest the full setup after changing it.

Check Roku power

If you use a Streaming Stick powered from the TV’s USB port, connect it to the supplied Roku power adapter and a wall outlet where possible. Roku recommends the supplied adapter and direct wall power for low-power warnings or a flashing red light. This is a secondary check; it does not replace testing the HDMI path.

Change the Roku display type

If you can navigate the Roku menus, go to Home → Settings → Display type, choose an available mode, and follow the on-screen test. If the picture is visible, select Yes, I can see it. Roku says the picture may go black temporarily during the change and that the device should revert to the previous setting after about 20 seconds if the new mode is not confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic is suitable for most users. Trying a compatible lower resolution or other available mode can help identify a resolution, refresh-rate, HDR, or HDMI negotiation issue. If the Roku menus are not visible, skip this step and use the physical connection tests first. See Roku’s instructions for changing display type.

If the problem happens only with 4K or HDR

Check the entire path, not just the Roku. For 4K UHD and HDR, Roku says the relevant devices and connections must support HDCP 2.2. That may include the Roku, the particular TV HDMI input, an AV receiver or soundbar, a switch, and any cable or extender in between.

  • Try the Roku directly on a TV input that supports the format.
  • Check each device’s manual for HDCP 2.2 and the specific 4K/HDR capability you use.
  • Test a lower Roku display type. If that works while 4K/HDR does not, the high-resolution signal path is implicated, though this alone does not identify which component is incompatible.
  • Use a suitable known-good cable and remove extenders or switches during testing.

HDMI 2.1 is not a blanket requirement for this fix. Match the cable and every device to the signal you need; the label or price alone does not establish compatibility.

Separate a Roku player problem from a Roku TV problem

A Roku streaming player plugged into a Roku TV is an external HDMI device. If that player’s picture is purple, test another TV input, cable, and direct connection as described above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Roku TV’s built-in home screen does not travel through an external HDMI cable. If the built-in interface is purple, check whether the TV’s own menus and other connected sources are affected. If only an attached console, cable box, or external Roku is purple, troubleshoot that device’s HDMI connection instead. Avoid replacing an HDMI cable for a built-in Roku TV image.

Use another TV or monitor to narrow it down

Connect the Roku player to another HDCP-compatible display, using a known-good cable and a direct connection if possible. Interpret the result as evidence, not a guaranteed diagnosis:

Test result What it suggests Next step
The image returns after the HDMI power cycle A temporary connection or handshake interruption may have been cleared. Monitor it; if it recurs, test the path one component at a time.
Another TV HDMI port works The original port or its settings may be involved. Use the working port and check the TV’s HDMI mode settings.
A different cable works The original cable may be faulty or unsuitable for the signal. Keep the known-good cable and retest 4K/HDR if relevant.
Direct connection works, but routing through a receiver, soundbar, or switch does not The intermediary device or its configuration may not be passing the signal correctly. Check its supported standards, inputs, and firmware, or keep it bypassed while troubleshooting.
The Roku works on another display The original TV, port, intermediary equipment, or compatibility settings are implicated. Test the original TV with another HDMI device and consult its manufacturer if the fault follows the TV.
The Roku fails on multiple known-good displays and cables The Roku, its power supply, or its software/hardware may be responsible. Try the remaining display-setting and software steps, then contact Roku support.
Every TV input, menu, and source is purple A broader TV or display fault is more likely than a Roku-only HDMI error. Test another source and contact the TV manufacturer.

For additional no-picture checks, including correct input selection and connections, see Roku’s no-picture guide.

Restart before considering a factory reset

A factory reset is a last resort, not an HDMI repair. It erases settings and account linkage, removes installed apps and account information, and sends the device through Guided Setup again. Before proceeding, make sure you know your Roku account credentials and Wi-Fi details, can sign in to your streaming apps again, and have any parental-control PIN you need.

On a responsive Roku player, the menu path is Home → Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Factory reset. On a Roku TV, select Factory reset everything. Follow Roku’s model-specific reset instructions.

Reset only after you have reseated and power-cycled the connection, tried a direct connection, another HDMI port and cable, a display-type change, and—if possible—another display. A reset may address a software or configuration issue; it cannot repair a damaged port or cable, make an incompatible switch pass HDCP, or fix a failing TV panel.

If the remote cannot control the Roku, the mobile app is useful only if the phone and Roku are already on the same network. Do not start a reset unless you can complete setup afterward. Physical reset procedures vary by model; Roku describes Recovery Mode as a more invasive Roku TV procedure to use only after other methods fail.

When to contact support or replace hardware

Use the test results to decide where to seek help. If the problem follows one TV port or appears across all TV sources, contact the TV manufacturer. If bypassing a soundbar, receiver, or switch resolves it, contact that device’s manufacturer or use a compatible path. If the Roku fails on multiple known-good displays and cables, contact Roku support before replacing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A replacement cable is a reasonable low-cost test when a known-good cable resolves the fault. A new Roku, TV, receiver, or soundbar is justified only when testing consistently points to that component; replacing equipment before isolating the problem can leave the actual cause untouched.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Roku screen purple but the sound still works?

A solid purple screen with an HDCP message usually indicates a video connection or compatibility problem, even if audio continues. Reset and isolate the HDMI path first; a general purple tint without that message can have other causes.

Can an HDMI splitter or soundbar cause a Roku purple screen?

Yes. A switch, splitter, receiver, or soundbar may not pass HDCP or the required 4K/HDR signal. Connect the Roku directly to the TV to test.

Will a factory reset delete my Roku apps and settings?

Yes. A factory reset erases settings and account linkage and removes installed apps and account information, so you will need to set up the device and sign in again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the screen go black after I change Display type?

Roku says the screen can go black temporarily while the display mode changes. If you cannot confirm the new picture, the device should revert to its previous setting after about 20 seconds.
