If the WordPress toolbar is missing while you view the public site, first check the account setting: while signed in, open Users > Your Profile, enable Show Toolbar when viewing site, save, and reload a front-end page. If it still does not appear, check that you are signed into the correct site, then investigate the active theme’s wp_footer() call and plugins or custom code that disable the toolbar.
First, confirm where the toolbar is missing
WordPress shows the admin bar to authenticated users browsing the front end. Logged-out visitors normally will not see it. Make sure the browser is signed into the intended WordPress installation rather than a similarly named staging or production domain.

The front-end preference is separate from the dashboard. WordPress no longer allows the profile option to hide the toolbar on administration screens, so a missing bar on the public site and a missing bar in the dashboard require different checks.

- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard with the account that should see the bar.
- Go to Users > Your Profile.
- Under the toolbar preference, turn on Show Toolbar when viewing site.
- Click Update Profile (or the equivalent save button).
- Open a front-end page in the same browser, confirm that you are still signed in, and refresh.
This checkbox applies to the individual user while viewing the site. Changing it does not control whether other users see the toolbar, and it does not hide or show the dashboard toolbar.

Use the symptoms to choose the next check
| What you observe | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Only one logged-in user is affected | Recheck that user’s profile preference and login session. |
| Several logged-in users are affected on every front-end page | Inspect the active theme’s footer hook, then isolate plugins and custom code. |
| The bar is absent only on one page or template | Compare that template with a page where the bar appears; look for missing footer output or page-specific code. |
| The dashboard bar appears, but the public-site bar does not | Focus on the front-end preference, theme output, and front-end filters. |
| The bar is missing for logged-out visitors | This is expected behavior; log in to test the toolbar. |
Check the active theme for wp_footer()
WordPress documentation identifies a theme that fails to call wp_footer() from its footer.php template as a possible reason the front-end toolbar does not render.
How to inspect safely
- Back up the site and, preferably, work on staging.
- Identify the active theme and inspect its footer template for a call to
wp_footer()immediately before the closing</body>tag. - If the call is absent, have the theme maintainer correct the template or implement the change through a properly maintained child theme. Avoid editing a parent theme that will be overwritten by updates.
- Clear any page, object, or server cache, then test again while signed in.
Do not assume a missing hook is the cause merely because the toolbar is absent; use the isolation steps below to confirm whether the theme is involved.
Look for plugins or custom code that suppress the bar
A plugin or site-specific code can disable the toolbar even when the profile checkbox is enabled. WordPress core exposes both the show_admin_bar() function and the show_admin_bar filter for controlling front-end visibility.
What to search for
show_admin_bar( false )add_filter( 'show_admin_bar', ... )- Callbacks attached to
show_admin_barthat returnfalse - Conditional logic targeting particular roles, templates, URLs, or users
Search your theme, child theme, mu-plugins, and custom-code snippets. Treat the private core helper _get_admin_bar_pref() as implementation detail; themes and plugins should use supported behavior rather than calling it directly.

Isolate a theme or plugin conflict
Run this diagnostic on a staging copy whenever possible. Make one reversible change at a time and test while logged in.
- Record the current theme, active plugins, and the pages on which the bar is missing.
- Temporarily switch to a current default WordPress theme.
- Reload the same front-end page. If the bar returns, the original theme or its templates are implicated.
- If it remains absent, restore the intended theme and deactivate plugins temporarily.
- Reactivate plugins individually, testing after each activation, until the behavior changes.
- Inspect the identified plugin or custom snippet for the toolbar controls above, then update, configure, replace, or remove the conflicting code.
- Restore the intended theme and all non-conflicting plugins, clear caches, and retest on several front-end pages.
This process identifies a conflict; it does not prove that any particular plugin is generally responsible for missing toolbars.

When the toolbar still does not appear
Collect details before contacting the theme or plugin maintainer or a WordPress support professional:
- Whether the bar is missing on every front-end page or only selected templates
- The active theme and any recent theme, plugin, or custom-code changes
- Whether other logged-in users are affected
- Whether the dashboard toolbar is visible
- Whether the profile preference is enabled for the affected account
- Whether the problem changes after switching to a default theme or isolating plugins
These details distinguish an account-specific preference from a site-wide rendering or code conflict and give support a reproducible starting point.
