If your MacBook Pro trackpad won’t work, connect the Mac to power, restart it, and test pointer movement with one finger. Then check Trackpad settings and disconnect accessories. If it still fails—or the trackpad is raised, stiff, or damaged—run Apple Diagnostics or arrange professional service. First identify whether the issue is pointer movement, clicking, tapping, gestures, or haptic feedback; the right fix depends on the symptom.

Identify what is failing

  • Pointer does not move: Check power, whether macOS is responsive, and your finger technique before assuming the trackpad has failed.
  • Pointer moves, but pressing does not click: Test tap-to-click and click pressure separately.
  • Pressing works, but tapping does not: Check whether Tap to click is enabled.
  • Clicks work, but gestures do not: Review the relevant gesture settings; this does not necessarily mean the whole trackpad is broken.
  • Force Click or vibration is missing: Check power and haptic settings. This is distinct from ordinary pointer movement and clicking.
  • Trackpad is raised, unusually stiff, or difficult to press: Stop pressing it and seek professional inspection. Physical deformation can indicate an internal problem, including possible battery swelling.
  • The whole Mac is unresponsive: Treat it as a frozen computer, not just a trackpad problem.

Try these quick checks first

  1. Connect the MacBook Pro to its charger. A low-battery warning may not be visible, and power-related behavior can make input appear to have stopped. Apple specifically recommends connecting power when a pointer will not move. Apple’s pointer troubleshooting guide
  2. Use one finger to move the pointer. Apple’s guidance distinguishes this from two-finger scrolling. If you were using two fingers to move the pointer, try again with one.
  3. Check whether the Mac is awake and responding. Look for screen activity, try pressing Caps Lock, or use another key. If the keyboard responds but the pointer does not, the issue may be limited to pointer input.
  4. Disconnect accessories temporarily. Unplug hubs, docks, external displays, USB input devices, and recently connected accessories. If you use a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad, switch it off for this test. The goal is to see whether the built-in trackpad behaves differently in a minimal setup, not to assume an accessory is at fault.
  5. Restart normally if possible. Choose Apple menu  > Restart. Save work first if you can.
  6. Force-shut down only if the Mac is frozen or you cannot restart it normally. Press and hold the power button—or Touch ID button on a Mac laptop—for up to 10 seconds, until it turns off. Wait briefly, then turn it on again. A forced shutdown can lose unsaved work, so it is a recovery step rather than a routine first fix. Apple Diagnostics and preparation guidance

Check Trackpad settings

If you can use a mouse, keyboard navigation, or another input method, open Apple menu  > System Settings > Trackpad. Older macOS versions may call the app System Preferences. Settings and labels vary with macOS version and trackpad model. Apple’s Trackpad settings guide

  • Tap to click: Turn this on if a light tap should register as a click.
  • Click: Adjust the required click pressure. Compare a tap with a physical press to narrow down which action is failing.
  • Force Click and haptic feedback: Check this setting if Force Click or its feedback is missing on a supported trackpad.
  • Secondary click: Review this if right-click is the only click action that does not work.
  • Tracking speed: Adjust this if the pointer moves but seems too slow or fast.
  • Gestures: Review the options under Scroll & Zoom and More Gestures if movement and ordinary clicks work but gestures do not.

On a Force Touch trackpad, the click sensation and feedback are produced by the system; the trackpad does not provide its usual click or haptic feedback when the Mac is turned off. A missing Force Click sensation alone does not prove that the whole trackpad has failed. Apple’s Force Click guidance

Use a mouse or keyboard while you troubleshoot

A wired USB mouse is a straightforward temporary way to open settings and reach your files; a previously paired Bluetooth mouse may also work. An external mouse is a workaround, not a repair, and its success does not establish that the built-in trackpad is healthy.

Keyboard navigation can help if you do not have a mouse. Use Tab, the arrow keys, Return, and the Space bar to move through and activate many controls. Command-Space opens Spotlight, and Command-Option-Escape opens the Force Quit window if an app is frozen. Navigation varies by screen and macOS version.

Run Apple Diagnostics

Apple Diagnostics can help identify a hardware issue and provide a reference code to share with a service provider. It may not catch every intermittent or mechanical fault. On macOS Tahoe 26 and later, a trackpad-specific test may be offered; on earlier versions, the diagnostic process is more automatic. Apple Diagnostics: how to use it

Before testing, install available macOS updates if possible, disconnect unnecessary external devices, keep AC power connected, and place the Mac on a hard, flat, stable surface with ventilation. Apple advises leaving only the connections needed for the test, such as power and any input, display, or network connection requested. Connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet if Diagnostics asks for internet access.

Apple-silicon MacBook Pro

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button or Touch ID button until startup options appear and Options is visible.
  3. Press and hold Command-D.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions. If a trackpad-specific diagnostic is offered, select it.

Intel MacBook Pro

  1. Shut down or restart the Mac.
  2. Immediately press and hold D as it starts.
  3. If that does not start Diagnostics, try Option-D.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions.

Write down any reference code and give it to Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or another repair provider. A code is not necessarily a repair instruction, but it can help with diagnosis.

When software isolation may help

If the trackpad works during startup but stops after you sign in, or the problem began after installing input software or a system utility, Safe Mode can be a useful isolation test. Apple’s startup instructions differ between Apple-silicon and Intel Macs, so follow the procedure for your processor rather than trying an Intel keyboard shortcut on an Apple-silicon model. Safe Mode can help narrow down a software cause; it cannot repair a damaged trackpad, cable, battery, or logic board. Apple’s startup options and key combinations

A macOS update may be sensible when one is available, but do not assume it will fix a persistent hardware fault. Avoid random Terminal commands, deleting preference files, or applying a generic “SMC reset” recipe as a universal solution; procedures depend on whether the Mac is Apple silicon or Intel, and such steps are not a substitute for basic checks and diagnosis.

Stop and arrange service if you see warning signs

Seek professional inspection if the trackpad stays unresponsive after charging and restarting, Diagnostics reports a relevant code, or the cursor jumps, clicks by itself, or works only intermittently. Service is also appropriate after liquid exposure or impact, if the problem persists in more than one startup environment, or if it began after a repair.

If the trackpad is raised, the case is bulging, or the trackpad is stiff or difficult to press, stop pressing it. Do not bend or squeeze the case, puncture anything, or open the Mac to investigate a possible battery problem. Disconnect power if it is safe to do so and arrange professional inspection promptly. A raised trackpad is a warning sign, not a remote diagnosis of the cause.

Choose a repair route

  • Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider: A suitable route if the Mac is covered by warranty or AppleCare, or if you prefer Apple-backed service. Out-of-warranty estimates depend on model, inspection, coverage, location, and damage; there is no reliable single trackpad repair price for all MacBook Pro models. Apple says service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer. Check Apple’s Mac laptop repair options.
  • Independent Repair Provider: Apple says these providers may have access to genuine parts, tools, training, service guides, and diagnostics. Their repairs are not covered by Apple’s warranty or AppleCare, although a provider may offer its own repair warranty. Ask for a written diagnosis, parts source, warranty terms, and confirmation that the provider will inspect for battery swelling or cable damage. Apple’s provider and Diagnostics information
  • Self Service Repair: This is limited to certain regions and specific Mac models, generally models introduced in 2020 or later; it is not a default recommendation for every owner. Avoid self-repair if the battery may be swollen, or if you lack the experience and tools for precision electronics. On eligible Apple-silicon Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Repair Assistant may be needed to complete calibration after certain repairs. Apple Repair Assistant

For supported Apple-silicon Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, macOS may show detected repair information under System Settings > General > About > Parts & Service. Apple parts and service history

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my MacBook Pro trackpad move the cursor but not click?

Check System Settings > Trackpad for Click pressure and Tap to click. If tapping works but pressing does not—or neither method registers after settings checks—the click mechanism or related hardware may need inspection.

Why does the trackpad work only when the Mac is plugged in?

A low battery or power-related behavior is one possibility. Connect power and check whether the Mac is charging and responsive. If the symptom continues, do not assume the battery is the cause; have the Mac assessed.

How do I right-click without a working trackpad?

Use an external mouse temporarily. If the trackpad otherwise works, review the Secondary click option in System Settings > Trackpad.

Is there an SMC reset for an Apple-silicon MacBook Pro?

Do not apply an Intel-era SMC-reset key combination to an Apple-silicon Mac. Start with power, restart, settings, and diagnostics steps appropriate to the Mac’s processor.

Can a swollen battery make the trackpad stop clicking?

Battery swelling can put pressure on internal components and may be associated with a raised or stiff trackpad, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Stop pressing a deformed trackpad and arrange professional inspection.

Will a macOS update fix a dead trackpad?

An update may help with some software issues, but it cannot repair physical damage, a disconnected cable, battery pressure, or liquid damage. Persistent failure needs diagnosis.
