If your Lenovo touchpad has stopped responding, first press the touchpad-icon key on the keyboard (with or without Fn), then check the touchpad switch in Windows Settings. Lenovo’s shortcut varies by model, so don’t assume a particular F-key will work. If those quick checks fail, follow the steps below in order: they move from reversible settings changes to driver checks, then to hardware diagnosis.
These instructions are for Lenovo laptops running Windows 11 or Windows 10. A touchpad that moves the pointer but has lost gestures needs a different diagnosis from one that has vanished from Windows entirely.
First, identify the symptom
Notice what the touchpad does before changing anything. These clues help narrow the cause:
Recommended Free Tools
- No movement or clicking: The touchpad may be disabled, undetected, or affected by a driver or hardware problem.
- Pointer moves, but tapping, clicking, scrolling, or gestures do not: Check touchpad settings and the correct model-specific driver. A generic driver can restore pointer movement without restoring all gestures.
- It works at sign-in but stops after Windows loads: A Windows setting, driver, or startup issue is more likely than a completely failed touchpad.
- It works only when an external mouse is unplugged: Check whether Windows is set to turn off the touchpad when a mouse is connected.
- It disappeared from Settings or Device Manager: Check model-specific drivers and detection before concluding that the hardware has failed.
- The problem started after an update: Updating or rolling back the relevant driver may help.
- The cursor jumps or freezes intermittently: Disconnect accessories and check for driver, settings, or physical problems. Liquid, impact, or a raised touchpad calls for service rather than repeated software changes.
A USB mouse can be a useful temporary way to navigate Windows while you troubleshoot. If the touchpad is physically raised or the palm rest is bulging, stop pressing it and skip to when to contact Lenovo.

1. Check the Lenovo touchpad shortcut
Look across the keyboard’s top row for a key marked with a touchpad icon. Press it once, wait a few seconds, and test the touchpad. If that does nothing, try Fn + that key. If your laptop has FnLock, try the shortcut both with and without Fn.
The key assignment differs between Lenovo models and generations. Some models use a model-specific combination such as Fn + M, but that is not universal; don’t assume F6, F8, F10, or another function key is guaranteed to control the touchpad. Check the manual for your exact model if you cannot find the icon. Lenovo’s Yoga user guide is one example of model-specific guidance.
2. Turn on the touchpad in Windows 11
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Turn Touchpad on.
- Expand the touchpad options and look for a setting that keeps it on when a mouse is connected. Wording and placement vary; enable it if you want both devices active.
Lenovo documents this Windows 11 route for ThinkPad systems in its touchpad enable/disable guidance. Menu wording may vary across models and driver packages.
If the touchpad is unusable, a USB mouse is the simplest workaround. You can also navigate with Tab and the arrow keys, use Enter or Space to select controls, and press Windows + I to open Settings.
3. Turn on the touchpad in Windows 10
- Open Start and search for Touchpad settings.
- Open the result and set the touchpad to On.
- If available, open Additional settings and check the classic mouse-properties panel for a disabled touchpad or a device-specific enable control.
If the option is missing or greyed out, the correct touchpad or mouse driver may not be installed. Lenovo’s Windows touchpad instructions note that driver availability can affect these controls.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 may continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides normal free support and security updates for it. See Microsoft’s Windows support information for details.
4. Disconnect accessories and restart
Unplug any external mouse, USB receiver, dock, or other accessory temporarily, then test the touchpad. If it starts working, revisit the touchpad setting for mouse-connected behavior.
If it still fails, save your work and restart Windows. If a normal restart does not help, try this basic power reset:
- Shut down Windows completely.
- Disconnect the charger and USB devices.
- Hold the power button for about 15–20 seconds.
- Reconnect power, start the laptop, and test the touchpad before reconnecting accessories.
This can clear a temporary input or firmware state; it cannot fix a damaged touchpad or disconnected cable.
5. Install Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- If shown, open Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates and review relevant driver updates.
- Restart and test the touchpad.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the preferred route for touchpad driver updates. It may not provide every Lenovo-specific package, so continue to the model-specific steps if the issue remains. See Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting guide.

6. Enable, update, or reinstall the device in Device Manager
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices.
- Look for a likely touchpad entry. Names vary and may include HID-compliant touch pad, Precision Touchpad, ELAN, Synaptics, HID-compliant mouse, or I2C HID Device.
- If Enable device appears when you right-click the likely touchpad entry, select it.
- Otherwise, choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If updating does not help, right-click the likely touchpad device and select Uninstall device, then restart. Windows may attempt to reinstall it; the result depends on Windows Update and driver availability.
Microsoft identifies those two Device Manager categories and recommends updating or reinstalling touchpad drivers. If you cannot see a touchpad entry, select View > Show hidden devices and check for greyed-out entries.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not uninstall every HID device: keyboards, mice, touchscreens, and other components can appear in the same category. A warning icon on an I2C HID Device can point to a chipset or Serial IO driver issue on some models, not just a touchpad-package problem. Treat it as a clue, not a universal diagnosis.
7. Roll back a driver if the problem began after an update
If the touchpad worked immediately before a Windows or driver update, check whether Windows retained a previous driver:
- In Device Manager, open the touchpad device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if available, then restart.
If the button is unavailable, Windows has no previous driver available through that interface. Do not download an old driver from an unofficial site.
8. Install the correct Lenovo drivers
Before installing drivers, identify the exact Lenovo model or serial number and the Windows edition and architecture installed. A driver intended for a similar-looking model may be wrong. A touchpad package may be listed under Synaptics, ELAN, HID, or another vendor, or touchpad support may be included in a broader input, chipset, or Serial IO package.

- Go to Lenovo Support and identify the laptop by serial number, product name, or machine type.
- Open Drivers & Software and select the installed Windows edition and architecture.
- Review the touchpad, chipset, Serial IO, and relevant input drivers offered for that exact model. Install applicable packages and restart.
Alternatively, use Lenovo Vantage or Lenovo System Update for supported systems. These tools can simplify model-specific updates; Lenovo states that System Update requires .NET Framework 4.0 or later. If you want to control each package, use the Lenovo Support page instead. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities, and do not install x64 packages blindly on an ARM-based system.
9. Check firmware and run Lenovo diagnostics
If the touchpad is missing from Windows or remains unresponsive after the correct drivers, check your exact model’s manual for a touchpad or internal pointing-device setting in BIOS/UEFI. The menu name and location are model-specific. If unsure, do not change unrelated firmware settings.
Lenovo offers diagnostic tools for Windows and other environments through its diagnostics page. Use the current download listed for your model and operating system; tool versions change. Diagnostics can help assess a hardware problem, but they cannot repair physical damage or a loose connection.
A BIOS/UEFI update is not a routine first fix. Consider one only if Lenovo provides it for your exact model and it is relevant to the issue. Verify the model carefully, back up important files, connect reliable power, and follow Lenovo’s instructions; interrupting a firmware update can cause serious problems.

What the BIOS and device checks can tell you
- Works in BIOS/UEFI or pre-boot diagnostics, but not Windows: This points more toward Windows settings, drivers, or software, but does not prove the hardware is fault-free.
- Visible in firmware but missing in Windows: Windows or driver detection is a likely place to investigate.
- Missing from Windows and firmware diagnostics: Hardware, firmware, cable, or motherboard trouble becomes more plausible. A Windows setting alone is less likely to explain it.
- Pointer moves but physical click fails: A mechanical or chassis issue may be involved; reinstalling a driver is unlikely to fix a damaged button.
- External mouse works but touchpad does not: Windows remains usable, but this does not establish whether the internal touchpad has a software or hardware fault.
These checks narrow the possibilities; none is a definitive diagnosis on its own.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Lenovo
Arrange service if the touchpad is not detected after the correct model-specific drivers are installed, fails in firmware or pre-boot diagnostics, or the laptop has suffered liquid or impact damage. Repeatedly reinstalling drivers is unlikely to help if the device is absent everywhere.
If the touchpad or palm rest is raised or bulging, stop using and pressing the area. A swollen battery is a possible safety issue; seek inspection rather than trying more software fixes.
If the laptop is under warranty, check coverage before opening it or attempting a repair. Lenovo’s support site provides warranty and repair resources, and its authorized service-provider information notes that out-of-scope work may incur a charge. Contact a provider about costs before arranging service.
When contacting support, have the serial number and exact model, Windows version, recent update history, any Device Manager error code, and the result of the BIOS or pre-boot test ready.
