If your laptop’s touchscreen has stopped responding, first confirm that the model has a touch display. Then restart Windows, clean and dry the screen, remove any protector, and check Device Manager > Human Interface Devices for HID-compliant touch screen. A device that works outside Windows likely has a software or configuration problem; one that fails in preboot diagnostics, has a dead section, or was damaged is more likely to need repair.

Identify what is failing

Touchscreen troubleshooting is different from fixing a touchpad, display, or stylus. A normal picture with no finger response points toward touch hardware or its software; a black screen, flicker, or lines may be a display problem instead. If only a pen fails while fingers work, investigate the pen, its battery or pairing, and its device-specific software.

Symptom What it may indicate Start here
No touch anywhere Touch is disabled, a driver or firmware issue, a non-touch display, or hardware failure Verify the model, restart, check Device Manager
Only a strip or corner fails Digitizer or panel damage is more likely than a calibration issue Run manufacturer diagnostics; arrange service if it persists
Touch lands in the wrong place Calibration, display selection, resolution, or panel compatibility Disconnect external displays and calibrate the correct screen
Unprompted or “ghost” touches Moisture, protector, electrical interference, driver or firmware issue, or hardware damage Clean and dry, remove accessories, test on battery
Touch stopped after a screen replacement Incompatible non-touch panel, disconnected digitizer cable, or incorrect assembly Check the replacement against the exact model; seek repair if needed

Note whether a mouse or touchpad works, whether the image is normal, and whether the problem began after an update, impact, spill, screen replacement, or hinge movement. Those clues help distinguish a Windows issue from physical damage.

Try these safe checks first

  1. Restart: Choose Start > Power > Restart. A restart reloads Windows device drivers; simply closing the lid may not. If the laptop is frozen, disconnect accessories and use the power button to force shutdown only as a last resort.
  2. Clean and dry the display: Turn the laptop off if practical and wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not spray liquid directly on the panel or let liquid run into its edges. Test with clean, dry fingers; moisture, grease, gloves, or an unsuitable stylus tip can interfere with touch.
  3. Remove the screen protector temporarily: A protector that is incompatible with capacitive touch or has bubbles can interfere with input. Dell lists screen guards and bubbles among possible causes of touch problems (Dell touchscreen troubleshooting).
  4. Disconnect accessories: Temporarily unplug docks, USB hubs, external monitors, USB touch devices, and third-party chargers. Turn off or move nearby electronic accessories if ghost touches are occurring. Test once with the charger disconnected and the laptop running on battery.

Confirm that your laptop has a touchscreen

Check the exact model number against the manufacturer’s specifications or support page. Two configurations of the same laptop line may have different displays, and a replacement LCD can show a normal picture without having touch capability. Windows may report “No pen or touch input is available for this display.” That can be normal for a non-touch model.

You can also look in Device Manager > Human Interface Devices for HID-compliant touch screen. Its absence is a clue, not proof: the device could be disabled, its driver could be missing, or the hardware could have failed. Lenovo distinguishes a non-touch LCD from a touchscreen whose driver is not functioning in its touch-input guidance.

Enable the touchscreen in Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Human Interface Devices.
  3. Find HID-compliant touch screen, right-click it, and choose Enable device if that option appears.
  4. If more than one touchscreen entry is listed, inspect each one. Restart and test again.

Do not mistake the touchscreen entry for HID-compliant pen, I2C HID Device, or a touchpad entry. Names vary by device; some Surface models also list an Intel Precise Touch Device or a Surface-specific component. See the official Windows touchscreen troubleshooting if the basic checks do not resolve the issue.

Install Windows and manufacturer updates

  1. Save your work and connect the charger.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart.
  3. Go to the laptop maker’s support app or driver-download page and select the exact model and Windows version.
  4. Install applicable model-specific BIOS/UEFI, chipset, Intel Serial IO or AMD chipset, touchscreen/digitizer firmware, and—if display mapping is involved—graphics updates.
  5. Restart and test.

Use the manufacturer’s official downloads, not generic driver sites or third-party “driver updater” utilities. The relevant diagnostic tools vary: Dell SupportAssist, HP display and touchscreen diagnostics, Lenovo support tools, ASUS MyASUS, and the Surface app or Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. Follow the maker’s instructions for your model. Official help includes HP display and touchscreen troubleshooting and ASUS touchscreen troubleshooting.

Reinstall the touchscreen device

Try this if touch used to work, the device appears in Device Manager, or it has a warning icon and enabling it did not help:

  1. In Device Manager > Human Interface Devices, right-click HID-compliant touch screen and choose Uninstall device.
  2. Confirm the uninstall. If there are two touchscreen entries, repeat for the second.
  3. In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes. If Windows does not restore the device automatically, restart.

Windows will normally redetect the hardware and reinstall the appropriate driver. This is not a universal, risk-free step: Microsoft specifically warns Surface Pro X users not to follow this driver-uninstall procedure because restoring drivers may require a full system reset. Check the instructions for your device before removing its driver. See Microsoft’s Surface touch guidance.

Calibrate only if touch is misaligned

Calibration is for touch that works but registers away from where you tap—for example, after a resolution change or screen replacement. It will not repair a dead corner, cracked panel, or persistent ghost touches, and a poor calibration can make mapping worse.

  • 5. Verify Compatibility: Please double-check your laptop model - Check the label on the bottom case of your device, and Check your original screen model – If unsure, carefully detach the LCD screen from your laptop (if possible) and find the model number on the back of the display panel. Providing these details will help ensure correct compatibility.
  1. Disconnect external monitors if you can, and restore the display’s recommended resolution.
  2. Search Start for Control Panel.
  3. Choose Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings, then select Calibrate under Display options.
  4. Select the touchscreen display, follow the targets carefully, and save. Labels and availability differ across Windows versions and manufacturers.

If you cannot accurately tap the calibration targets, stop rather than guessing; investigate drivers, display selection, or hardware. ASUS documents resetting calibration to default on supported systems in its touchscreen troubleshooting instructions.

Test outside Windows to narrow down the cause

A test in UEFI or manufacturer preboot diagnostics helps separate a Windows problem from a hardware fault. A failed preboot touch test makes a Windows driver an unlikely cause, though the maker should confirm the result. A successful test points toward Windows, drivers, firmware, or calibration—not a guarantee that every part of the touchscreen is healthy.

On a Microsoft Surface: Shut down. Press and hold Volume Up, press and release Power, and keep holding Volume Up until the Surface or Microsoft logo appears. Test touch in UEFI. This button sequence is Surface-specific, not a universal BIOS shortcut. For other brands, use the model’s manual or built-in preboot diagnostics, if available; Dell, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS provide model-specific diagnostic options.

Fix persistent ghost touches

Phantom input can make a laptop difficult to use and can resemble a failed touchscreen. Clean and dry the panel, remove the protector, disconnect docks and external monitors, and test on battery with other accessories moved away. Install the model’s official updates, then use preboot diagnostics if available. Microsoft also recommends checking for nearby electronic interference on Surface devices (Surface touch troubleshooting).

If ghost touches continue after those checks—especially after a drop, liquid exposure, crack, or failed preboot test—stop treating the problem as a likely Windows setting. The digitizer, cable, or screen assembly may need service.

If touch stopped after damage or screen replacement

After a replacement, confirm that the exact part number and display configuration include touch. A visually similar non-touch LCD can produce a picture but no finger input. A touch assembly may also fail if its digitizer cable is disconnected or damaged, or if a connector is not seated correctly. Internal inspection is best left to a technician if you do not have the skills and tools; bonded displays are easy to damage during removal.

After liquid exposure, power off, unplug, and do not repeatedly test the laptop; arrange professional inspection. If the display is cracked, avoid pressing hard on it. If the battery is swollen or the screen is being pushed away from the frame, stop using the device and do not press it back into place. Check warranty and accidental-damage coverage before opening the laptop. Warranty terms differ, but damage caused by unauthorized repair may be excluded; Microsoft explains the risks and limits of Surface self-repair.

Use a mouse while touch is unavailable

A laptop can still be used with its touchpad, a USB or Bluetooth mouse, and keyboard shortcuts. An external monitor may help if the built-in display is also damaged. If phantom touches make Windows unusable, disable the malfunctioning touchscreen temporarily:

  1. Open Device Manager > Human Interface Devices.
  2. Right-click HID-compliant touch screen and select Disable device.
  3. To restore touch later, return to the same menu and choose Enable device.

On Surface devices, disabling touch also disables related touch accessories such as Surface Pen, Surface Dial, and the Windows touch keyboard. A mouse is a workaround, not a touchscreen repair.

When to seek repair—and whether replacement is worthwhile

Arrange service if touch fails in preboot diagnostics, only a section responds, ghost touches persist, the laptop has been dropped or exposed to liquid, or the panel is cracked, lifting, or separating. Seek help before further troubleshooting if the internal connector may be damaged or the repair requires removing a bonded display. Back up data before service or a reset. For Surface service, Microsoft notes that a repair may involve a reset or replacement; see service and repair options.

Compare a repair quote with the laptop’s age, condition, and replacement value. Repair is more appealing when the computer is relatively new or valuable, the correct touch assembly is available, and the cost is well below replacing the device. Replacement may make more sense if the display is bonded and expensive, parts are unavailable, the laptop has other failing components, or the quote approaches the cost of a comparable replacement. There is no reliable universal repair price: model, panel, parts, labor, location, and warranty coverage all affect it. Do not buy a screen before diagnosis; a disabled device, protector, driver, cable, or non-touch configuration can make the wrong part an expensive mistake.
