“Connected but not charging” means your Pixel detects a cable or charging pad, but the battery is not receiving enough usable power—or charging has been deliberately slowed or paused. The cause may be a bad cable, adapter, outlet, case, heat, moisture, debris, wireless misalignment, software behavior, or hardware damage. Work through the controlled tests below before buying accessories or requesting a repair.
First, check whether charging is paused normally
Open Settings → Battery and check the battery level and status. A Pixel may slow or pause charging when it is hot or when battery-protection features are active. Adaptive Charging can hold the battery around 80% and finish closer to your usual wake-up time; that does not by itself indicate a failed battery. If the phone is warm, unplug it, remove the case, move it out of sunlight, and let it return to room temperature. Reconnect it with the screen off and avoid demanding apps while testing. Heat can substantially reduce or pause charging.

- USB-C fails but wireless works: suspect the cable, adapter, outlet, USB-C port, or wired charging circuit.
- Wireless fails but USB-C works: check model support, alignment, case or magnets, heat, and the charging pad.
- Both methods fail: software, thermal protection, battery, liquid damage, or another hardware fault becomes more likely.
- The percentage falls while connected: the phone may be consuming power faster than a weak source supplies it, especially with the screen on, poor cellular coverage, heat, or intensive apps.
Fast, safe fixes
- Remove obstructions. Take off thick or wallet cases, PopSockets, ring holders, magnetic mounts, MagSafe-style attachments, and metal plates. A case can prevent a USB-C plug from seating fully or stop wireless coils from aligning. Google documents these issues in its wireless-charging guidance.
- Use a wall outlet. Connect the charger directly to a known-good outlet, not a laptop, monitor, hub, vehicle USB port, or low-power battery pack. Test the outlet with another device or a lamp.
- Try a known-good charger and cable. Google recommends a 30W USB-C adapter or a compatible PPS adapter rated at 30W or more for the best experience. USB-PD adapters rated at 15W or more are also listed as compatible, although the speed depends on the Pixel model. A higher wattage number does not guarantee faster charging. - Test the parts separately. Keep the same adapter and substitute another USB-C cable; then keep the cable and substitute another adapter. If another cable fixes the problem, replace the original cable. If another adapter fixes it, the first adapter may be damaged, underpowered, or incompatible. USB-C-to-USB-C is generally the best test for a USB-PD wall charger; USB-A-to-USB-C can work but is slower with a USB-A adapter.
- Inspect the USB-C port. Disconnect the charger and use a bright light. Look for lint, dust, moisture, bent components, or a plug that no longer fits firmly. Never probe the port with a needle, pin, paper clip, knife, or other metal tool; do not force the connector or pour liquid into the port. If moisture is suspected, let both phone and cable dry completely before reconnecting. Google’s charging troubleshooting page and Pixel safety guidance warn against charging with moisture present.
- Give a nearly empty phone time. Connect a working setup and wait at least one minute for a battery indicator. Leave it connected for another 10 minutes before trying to power it on or changing accessories. A fully depleted Pixel may take several minutes before its screen responds.
- Restart the Pixel. Hold the Power button and choose Restart when offered, then reconnect the charger. If the phone is unresponsive, Google advises holding Power for approximately 5–7 seconds to turn it on; exact forced-restart behavior varies by generation.
If wired charging is the problem
Reconnect both ends firmly and check whether the cable’s connector or insulation is bent, frayed, loose, or hot. Try the cable and adapter with another device, but treat that only as an isolation test—not proof that the combination is ideal for your Pixel. If the Pixel shows “Check charging accessory”, stop using that combination and substitute a reputable, compatible cable and USB-PD/PPS adapter.

If the plug charges only when held at an angle, the port may be worn or damaged. Do not keep applying pressure; back up the phone while it still has power and arrange service.
If wireless charging is the problem
Wireless charging is not available on every Pixel. Google lists support from Pixel 3 onward with exceptions including Pixel 3a, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5a, and Pixel 6a. Confirm your exact model before treating a wireless pad as a test.
- Remove the case and all magnetic or metal accessories.
- Cool the phone and keep the screen off.
- Place it centrally on a compatible Qi charger; try another pad if available.
- Ensure the pad’s airflow is not blocked.
For the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Google recommends a Qi2-certified charger for the fastest wireless charging and says first- and second-generation Pixel Stand models are not compatible with those phones. See the current Pixel wireless-charging list.

When a falling percentage is not a dead charger
A Pixel can draw power while its percentage still drops if the screen, games, camera, hotspot, poor cellular coverage, or other workloads consume more than the charger supplies. Use a wall outlet, turn the screen off, stop demanding apps, and—when coverage is very poor—temporarily try Airplane Mode. If the phone remains hot or continues losing charge with a known-good 30W-class USB-PD/PPS setup, suspect a hardware or battery issue.
Stop troubleshooting and arrange repair if
- The phone or back panel is swollen, unusually hot, smoking, or emitting an abnormal odor.
- The phone or cable has significant liquid exposure, visible battery damage, or a damaged/frayed connector.
- The USB-C port is loose, visibly damaged, or works only at an angle.
- Several known-good cables, adapters, outlets, and charging methods all fail.
- A known-good accessory repeatedly triggers an accessory warning.
Do not open the Pixel or attempt a battery replacement yourself. Back up data while the phone works, record its IMEI, and follow Google’s repair-preparation instructions.

Use Google’s repair center or the Pixel repair instructions. Availability of mail-in and walk-in service depends on country, model, warranty status, parts, and location. The portal uses the IMEI or serial number to identify the phone and provide an estimate; damage outside warranty may incur a charge. Google Store describes some walk-in repairs as potentially same-day and mail-in service as typically 7–10 days overall, but actual timing varies.

Before shipping or handing over the phone, back up your data, remove SIM or eSIM information as appropriate, and expect that a repair or replacement may require a reset. Warranty coverage is determined after inspection; a charging-port, liquid, accidental, or debris-related fault is not automatically covered.

FAQ
Why does my Pixel say it is connected but not charging?
The phone has detected the accessory, but power may be insufficient, deliberately paused because of heat or battery protection, blocked by debris or moisture, or interrupted by a failed accessory or charging circuit.
Can I charge a Pixel from a laptop?
Usually, but a laptop, hub, vehicle port, or monitor may provide less or less-consistent power than a wall charger. Use a direct wall-outlet test when diagnosing a failure.
Should I buy only a Google-branded charger?
No. Google documents compatible USB-PD and PPS chargers from other manufacturers. Choose compatibility and cable condition rather than the largest wattage label.
Why is my Pixel stuck at 80%?
Adaptive Charging or another battery-protection behavior may be delaying the final portion, especially near your normal wake time. Check Battery settings and allow the phone to remain connected under cool, normal conditions.
Can I use wireless charging while a moisture warning is present?
Only if the phone and model support it and there is no broader liquid damage. Do not repeatedly reconnect a wet cable or attempt to override a moisture warning; dry the phone and cable completely first.
