If Windows has frozen, try to recover the session before forcing the PC off: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end only the app marked “Not responding.” If the desktop or taskbar is stuck, restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager. For a frozen or black display, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. Use the power button only if no keyboard shortcut works; a forced shutdown can lose unsaved work.
A single freeze may be temporary. If it happens again, note when it occurs and follow the matching troubleshooting path below. These steps cover Windows 10 and 11; Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives ordinary free Windows Update security fixes or technical support. Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance covers both versions.
First, work out what is frozen
“Frozen PC” can mean several different things, and the right first step depends on which one you have:
- One app is frozen: The program stops responding, but the cursor, taskbar, or shortcuts still work.
- The desktop is frozen: The taskbar, Start menu, desktop, or File Explorer is unresponsive.
- The display is frozen or black: The PC may still be running even though the screen has stopped updating.
- The whole PC is unresponsive: Shortcuts do nothing, the cursor does not move, and there is no visible response.
- Windows crashes: A blue or black screen shows a stop code, or the PC restarts or shuts down.
- Windows hangs during startup: It stops at the logo, spinning dots, sign-in screen, or just after login.
A frozen app usually calls for ending that app, not shutting down the whole computer. A startup freeze or repeated system crash needs diagnosis after you regain control.

Try these recovery steps before forcing a shutdown
If you are unsure whether the PC is frozen or just busy, stop clicking repeatedly and wait briefly. Windows may be processing an update, disk operation, or large task. If an app still responds, save your work. Do not interrupt an obvious file transfer or disk repair unless the computer is truly unresponsive.
1. Close only the unresponsive app
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If Task Manager opens in compact view, select More details.
- On the Processes tab, select the app labelled Not responding.
- Select End task, then reopen the app when Windows is responsive again.
Ending a task can discard unsaved changes in that app. Do not end random Windows processes simply because they use a lot of CPU or memory.
2. Restart Windows Explorer if the desktop or taskbar is stuck
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and select Restart.
- If it is not listed, open Task Manager’s File menu, select Run new task, type
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
The taskbar and desktop may briefly disappear while Explorer restarts. This refreshes the Windows shell; it will not fix a failing drive or other underlying system problem. See Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps.
3. Reset the graphics driver for a stuck or black screen
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. A beep or brief screen flicker may indicate that Windows has reset the display driver. If you use an external monitor, dock, or cable, check those connections as well. This shortcut may recover a display-driver hang, but it cannot fix defective graphics hardware.
If the screen is black with a movable cursor, you can also try Task Manager and restart explorer.exe as described above. Press Windows + P to check the display mode if you may have switched to another screen.
4. Use the security screen if Windows still responds
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen appears, open Task Manager, sign out, or select the power icon and restart normally.
5. Force a shutdown only if nothing responds
If no shortcut works and the PC is genuinely unresponsive, hold the physical power button until it turns off. Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance says to hold it for about 20 seconds. Wait several seconds, disconnect nonessential peripherals, then turn the PC on again.

A forced shutdown can lose unsaved data and may cause file-system problems if Windows was writing to disk. It is a last-resort recovery step—not a routine response to a slow PC. Avoid interrupting a Windows update or disk repair if the machine is still making progress.
After restart, look for a pattern
Before changing settings, note what was happening when the freeze occurred. Record any error message or stop code, and consider:
- Was only one app affected, or did the whole PC stop responding?
- Did it happen after waking from sleep, signing in, or installing an update, driver, app, or peripheral?
- Does it happen during games, video playback, large file transfers, or video calls?
- Does Windows freeze before sign-in, or only after the desktop loads?
- Is the system drive nearly full? Microsoft’s Windows 10 troubleshooting guidance suggests keeping roughly 10% to 15% free as a practical guideline, not a universal requirement.
- Are the fans unusually loud, is the PC very hot, or do you hear unusual drive noises?
Microsoft lists hardware devices, drivers, and software among possible causes of repeated stop-code failures. A freeze by itself does not identify which one is responsible.
Check updates, recent changes, and startup apps
Once Windows is stable enough to use, install pending updates if the problem did not begin immediately after an update:
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, then restart normally.
Updating is not an automatic cure. If freezing began just after a Windows update, app, driver, or new device, consider reversing that change first: uninstall the app or update, roll back the driver, or disconnect the new device. If a restore point is available, System Restore may also help.
If the PC freezes shortly after sign-in, check startup apps:
- Open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
- Disable nonessential third-party apps, especially ones added shortly before the issue began.
- Restart and test. Re-enable items one at a time if needed to identify a cause.
Avoid disabling security software or components you do not recognize. If the freeze occurs at a particular time, note what is scheduled or running then rather than disabling everything at once.

Use Safe Mode to narrow down the cause
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files, drivers, and services. If the PC stays stable there, a third-party driver, startup program, or nonessential service becomes more plausible, but Safe Mode does not prove the hardware is healthy.

If you can use Windows
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart from the Start menu’s power options.
- Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
- After the PC restarts, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
If Windows will not stay usable
Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) from the sign-in screen if available: hold Shift while selecting Restart, then follow the Startup Settings steps above. If Windows cannot reach that screen, startup interruption can trigger recovery after failed starts: hold the power button during boot to turn off the PC, and repeat until WinRE appears. This is for a failed boot, not a normal way to shut down a working computer. In WinRE, select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
In Safe Mode, remove a recently installed app, roll back a recently changed driver, disable suspicious startup items, or run a scan. If Windows freezes in Safe Mode too, hardware trouble, Windows corruption, or a low-level driver becomes more likely. Microsoft’s Startup Settings instructions explain the available startup modes.
Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
These built-in tools can repair some Windows component and protected-system-file problems. They cannot repair failing RAM, overheating, or defective storage. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker (SFC):
- Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to complete:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- Then run:
sfc /scannow- Leave the window open until verification reaches 100%, then restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC can use as a repair source; SFC checks protected system files. DISM normally uses Windows Update as its source, so a damaged update source may require a different repair source.

Common SFC results mean:
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” SFC found no protected system-file problems.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart and see whether the freeze returns.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” More recovery steps may be needed; the CBS log can contain details.
- “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.” Microsoft suggests trying SFC in Safe Mode and checking relevant Windows directories.

Check drivers, memory, storage, and heat
Drivers and connected devices
Open Device Manager and look for warning icons, especially on graphics, chipset, storage-controller, network, dock, and USB devices. If the problem began after a driver update, try Roll Back Driver first. If a driver is old and the problem is longstanding, use the PC or component manufacturer’s official driver. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.

Do not update BIOS/UEFI as a generic freeze fix. Consider it only for a documented compatibility or stability issue, and follow the manufacturer’s model-specific process; an interrupted or incorrect firmware update can leave a PC unusable.
Memory
- Search for Windows Memory Diagnostic.
- Select Restart now and check for problems, and let the test finish.
- Review its result after Windows restarts.
If the test reports errors, back up important files and treat the issue as possible hardware trouble. A repair shop or manufacturer can test the memory; only test individual modules yourself if the computer is designed to be serviced and you know how to do so safely. Microsoft includes Windows Memory Diagnostic among steps for investigating recurring stop-code problems.

Check whether the system drive is nearly full, Windows reports drive errors, or the drive disappears intermittently. Freezing during file transfers or application loading may be a clue, not a diagnosis. Unusual clicking from a mechanical hard drive, SMART warnings, repeated file corruption, or intermittent drive disconnections are reasons to prioritize a backup and seek help. Do not run aggressive repair operations on a suspected failing drive before securing important data.
If freezes occur during games or other heavy workloads, check ventilation, dust buildup, temperatures, graphics drivers, overlays, overclocking, and power stability. Heat or power problems need appropriate hardware diagnosis; a software repair cannot correct them.

Freezing alone is not evidence of malware. If you also see suspicious programs, unexpected security alerts, or unexplained resource use, start with Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection.
- Run a Quick scan. If concern remains, choose Scan options and run a Full scan.
For suspected persistent malware, save open work, then choose Scan options → Microsoft Defender Offline scan → Scan now. The PC restarts and scans outside the normal Windows session. Windows Security and Microsoft Defender are built in to Windows 10 and 11; installing another real-time antivirus may put Defender into a disabled mode while that product is active. Avoid running multiple real-time antivirus products together. See Microsoft’s guidance on virus and threat protection and Defender Offline.
Choose the recovery tool that matches the problem
If normal troubleshooting does not solve the issue, WinRE offers several tools. Reach it with Shift + Restart when Windows is usable, or through Automatic Repair after a failed startup. You can also use installation media or a recovery drive.

- Uninstall Updates: Use this if a recent update appears to have triggered the problem.
- System Restore: Try this when freezing began after a system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Startup Settings: Use this to enter Safe Mode.
- Command Prompt: For advanced repair steps.
- Reset this PC: Reserve this for persistent software problems after less destructive options.
System Restore reverts system files, drivers, installed apps, registry settings, and system settings to an earlier point. It is designed not normally to remove personal files, but it is not a backup, and restore points may be unavailable, disabled, or too old. Microsoft’s recovery-options guide maps tools to common problems; its System Protection guide explains restore points.
Reset or reinstall Windows only after backing up
Reset this PC is a major step, not a first-line freeze fix. Its options typically include:
- Keep my files: Retains personal files, but removes apps and resets settings. It is not a substitute for a backup.
- Remove everything: Removes personal files, apps, and settings.
Before resetting or reinstalling, back up documents, photos, browser data, game saves, encryption keys, and authentication codes. Confirm you can access your accounts and have app installers or licence details. Keep the PC on reliable power and disconnect unnecessary storage devices so you are less likely to select the wrong drive.

A clean Windows reinstall may help with severe operating-system corruption or persistent malware, but it will not fix defective RAM, a failing SSD, overheating, or a power or graphics fault. If you need installation media, Microsoft explains how to create it using another working PC and a USB drive. Do not start a reset or reinstall until you have verified your backup. When to stop troubleshooting and seek repair
Back up what you can and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional if you encounter any of these signs:
- Repeated memory-test errors, drive warnings, a clicking hard drive, or storage that disconnects or causes file corruption.
- Overheating, repeated thermal shutdowns, a burning smell, liquid damage, or physical damage.
- A swollen battery. Stop using or charging the device and seek professional service.
- Repeated freezes in Safe Mode, or freezes that continue after Windows has been reset or cleanly reinstalled.
- A business PC, important unbacked-up data, or recovery steps you are not comfortable performing.
Back up before hardware tests or repair where possible. If a drive may be failing, further attempts to repair it can put data at risk; professional advice may be the safer next step.

Reduce the chance of another freeze
- Keep regular backups, including files that are not part of cloud sync.
- Leave enough free space on the system drive for Windows and applications to work.
- Install Windows updates and manufacturer-approved drivers when the PC is stable; reverse a specific update if it clearly triggers a problem.
- Remove unnecessary startup apps and avoid questionable installers, registry cleaners, and “PC optimizer” utilities.
- Keep vents clear, provide airflow, and clean dust safely according to the device manufacturer’s instructions.
- Create restore points where appropriate and ensure System Protection is configured.
- If you still use Windows 10, plan a move to a supported operating system if your hardware is compatible. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025; check compatibility before upgrading.
