For most unresponsive iPhones, start with a force restart: quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. On iPhone 7, hold Side and Volume Down; on iPhone 6s and earlier, hold Home and Side or Top. A force restart normally does not erase data. If that fails, work through the checks below before using recovery mode—and choose Update before Restore.
First, identify what is frozen
A lit screen that ignores taps is different from a black screen, a stalled startup, or an iPhone showing a computer-and-cable recovery screen. The symptom helps determine whether to restart, charge, wait, or connect to a computer.
- One app is frozen: If buttons or gestures still work elsewhere, close and reopen the app if possible.
- The whole interface is unresponsive: Touch and normal power-off controls do not work; try a force restart.
- The screen is black: The iPhone may be off, out of charge, or unable to display an image.
- Apple logo or progress bar: Startup or an update may still be in progress. If a progress bar is moving, wait.
- Connect to computer screen: The iPhone is in recovery mode and needs computer-assisted troubleshooting.
- Repeated restarts: A boot loop can involve software, battery, overheating, or hardware problems.
Do not keep tapping a dead screen or try random button combinations. If the phone is swollen, unusually hot, cracked, or recently exposed to liquid, stop troubleshooting and seek service.
Five ways to fix a frozen iPhone screen
1. Force restart the iPhone
A force restart is the best first step when the entire iPhone is stuck. It is not a factory reset and does not intentionally erase your data. The button sequence depends on the model; Apple’s instructions are available for iPhone 8 and later and for iPhone 7 and earlier.

iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button.
- Release the Side button when the Apple logo appears.
Make the two volume-button presses quick. Holding them instead of pressing and releasing can bring up other controls rather than restart the phone.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down at the same time.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation)
- Press and hold the Home button and the Side or Top button at the same time.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.
If no logo appears, move on to the charging checks. If a button is stuck or does not work, do not improvise with tools or excessive pressure; the button may need service.

2. Check charging and accessories
A black screen may simply mean the battery is depleted, but charging will not repair a damaged display or corrupted software. Disconnect nonessential accessories, then try a known-good wall outlet, cable, and adapter. Check the cable and charging port for visible damage or debris; do not insert anything into the port. Let the iPhone charge for a while, then repeat the model-specific force-restart steps.
If the phone became unusually hot, unplug it and let it cool before trying again. A damaged port, liquid exposure, swelling, or persistent heat is a reason to stop and seek service, not to apply heat or keep testing chargers.

3. Remove touch-screen obstructions
If the display lights up but touch input is unreliable, remove a tight or damaged case and any cracked or poorly fitted screen protector. Dry the screen and your hands, and disconnect accessories that may interfere with input. Then try the screen again.
If physical buttons work but touch remains completely unresponsive, the display or its touch sensor may be damaged. Removing an obstruction cannot fix a failed display component.

4. Use recovery mode and choose Update
Use recovery mode if the iPhone will not start normally, remains stuck on the Apple logo, or displays the recovery screen. You need a Mac or Windows PC, a USB cable that supports data transfer, and current computer software. On a Mac, use Finder; on Windows, use the Apple Devices app. Apple’s full recovery instructions are at support.apple.com/en-us/118106.

Restore erases the iPhone and its local data and settings. Do not choose Restore unless Update failed, you need to erase the phone, or Apple instructs you to. A backup may help restore data after erasure, but do not assume a current backup exists.

Enter recovery mode
- Connect the iPhone to the computer and open Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows.
- iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later: Quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down. Hold the Side button until the Connect to computer screen appears.
- iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: Hold the Side (or Top) button and Volume Down together until the recovery screen appears.
- iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Hold Home and the Side (or Top) button together until the recovery screen appears.
- When the computer offers the choice, select Update. Keep the iPhone connected while the process runs.
If the software download takes more than 15 minutes, the iPhone may leave the recovery screen. Let the computer finish downloading, then repeat the recovery-mode steps and select Update again. If Update fails or the phone returns to recovery mode repeatedly, contact Apple or an authorized service provider. If you do not have access to a computer, Apple advises getting help at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider: support.apple.com/en-us/118430.
5. Arrange service if the problem persists
Seek a service assessment if force restart and charging do not help, recovery Update fails, buttons are broken, or the problem returns repeatedly. Stop troubleshooting sooner if the phone was dropped or exposed to liquid, the display is cracked or lifting, the battery appears swollen, or the device stays unusually hot. Do not open the iPhone or attempt a battery replacement without appropriate training and equipment.
Apple offers in-person and mail-in service options. Repair estimates depend on model, condition, coverage, location, and inspection; Apple Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees. Check the details with the provider before authorizing work using Apple’s iPhone repair page.

When an Apple-logo pause is not necessarily a freeze
An iPhone can show an Apple logo while an update, restore, migration, or transfer is running. A moving progress bar is a reason to wait, not to interrupt the process. Apple recommends recovery-mode troubleshooting when the progress bar has not moved for at least one hour; choose Update first. See Apple’s guidance for an iPhone stuck on the Apple logo.
