If Ctrl + Alt + Delete does nothing, don’t assume Windows has completely crashed: the problem could be one app, the display driver, or the keyboard. First try Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, then Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If neither works and the computer remains unresponsive, a forced shutdown may be necessary—but it can erase unsaved work or interrupt an update.
Work through the least-destructive steps first. A moving mouse, continuing audio, or a responsive Task Manager can mean that only one part of Windows has stalled. A black or frozen display can also be a graphics problem even when the computer is still running.
Try these steps before forcing a shutdown
- Wait briefly. If Windows is installing an update, loading a large file, or visibly working, give it a few minutes. Avoid rapidly pressing keys or cycling power while data may be getting written.
- Press Esc once, then try Alt + Tab to switch to another open app.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or brief screen flicker may indicate that Windows received the command. This can help with a blank, flickering, or frozen display; it is not a general fix for every system lockup. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide documents the shortcut.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager directly. If it opens, use the steps below to close a stuck app or restart the desktop shell. Microsoft lists this as a direct Task Manager shortcut in its Windows system configuration tools guide.
- Try Ctrl + Alt + Delete again. If the screen remains wholly unresponsive, move to a forced shutdown as a last resort.
Close the frozen app in Task Manager
If Task Manager opens, select More details if you see its compact view. On the Processes tab, look for the application marked Not responding. Select it and choose End task. This can discard unsaved work in that application, but it avoids restarting the whole computer if Windows itself is still working.

If the desktop or taskbar has stopped responding
In Task Manager, find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and select Restart. The taskbar or desktop may disappear briefly and then return. If Windows Explorer is not listed, select Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter. Microsoft includes these Explorer recovery steps in its blank-screen guidance.
If the screen is black, frozen, or flickering
First try the graphics-driver reset shortcut above. Then check that the monitor is powered on and that its HDMI, DisplayPort, or other video cable is firmly connected. If practical, disconnect external monitors and unnecessary docks or accessories to see whether the built-in display works.
If you suspect Windows is responding but sending video to the wrong display, press Windows + P, then press P again and Enter to cycle display modes. If the issue began after a graphics-driver or application change, use Safe Mode to investigate that change rather than repeatedly forcing the computer off.
Check whether the keyboard or connection is the problem
A failed keyboard, USB port, or wireless receiver can make Windows shortcuts appear broken. If the computer may still be running, test the keyboard’s indicator lights, try a different USB port or a wired keyboard, and reconnect a wireless receiver. On a laptop, try the built-in keyboard if you were using an external one. If neither mouse nor keyboard responds and the screen does not update, a complete system hang is more likely—but the failed shortcut alone does not prove it.

Force-shut down only when nothing else works
If the computer is completely unresponsive, use its physical power button. Hold it until the computer switches off; Microsoft guidance commonly describes about 10 seconds, while a particular blank-screen scenario may call for up to 20 seconds. The exact behavior varies by device, so follow its manual if it specifies otherwise.
- If the computer briefly responds, save open work first.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, printers, and docks if you can do so safely.
- Hold the power button until the computer turns off, wait several seconds, then turn it on again.
A forced shutdown can lose unsaved work and interrupt updates or disk writes. Don’t repeatedly power off a computer that is successfully booting or installing an update. If the machine restarts, let it finish rather than interrupting it again without a clear reason.
If the freeze returns: enter Recovery and try Safe Mode
If Windows still opens, you can reach recovery options without interrupting startup:

- Windows 10: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery, then choose the restart option under Advanced startup.
- Alternatively, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
If Windows will not start normally, Microsoft documents an alternative: turn on the computer, and when the Windows or manufacturer logo appears, hold the power button to turn it off. Repeat once, then start it a third time. Windows should enter Automatic Repair or the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE); select Advanced options. From WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. After the restart, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking, or 6 or F6 for Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If the freeze stops there, a startup app, service, or ordinary driver becomes more likely, but Safe Mode does not identify the cause or rule out hardware trouble. An encrypted computer may ask for its BitLocker recovery key when you use recovery tools. Locate the key before proceeding with advanced recovery, reset, or reinstall options. On a work or school computer, recovery choices and driver changes may be managed by an administrator.
Find out why the computer froze
Before changing several things at once, note what happened just before the freeze: a Windows update, a graphics or storage-driver change, a new application or game, a USB device or dock, or a change to BIOS, power, antivirus, or overclocking settings. Disconnect recently added accessories and undo a recent change where appropriate. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

Isolate a startup app or service
If Safe Mode works but normal Windows keeps freezing, a clean boot can help isolate a software conflict. It starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs. Follow Microsoft’s steps carefully and restore normal startup settings after testing; disabling services or startup items can affect how apps work.

Repair Windows system files
If Windows is stable enough to run commands, open Command Prompt as administrator. Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthAfter DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannowLeave the Command Prompt open until SFC reaches 100 percent. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because it can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses. “No integrity violations” means SFC found no corrupted protected system files; “found and repaired” means restart and test again. If SFC cannot run or cannot repair some files, try Safe Mode or consult Microsoft’s system-file repair instructions. The SFC command reference documents its syntax and administrator requirement.
Check storage and memory carefully
For suspected file-system errors, an administrator can run chkdsk /f C:. Because the system drive is in use, Windows may ask to schedule the check at the next restart. It can take time and is not a universal cure. If freezes come with clicking noises, disappearing files, boot errors, or repeated disk faults, back up important files immediately if possible and seek storage diagnosis rather than relying on CHKDSK to fix a potentially failing drive.

To test memory, search Start for Windows Memory Diagnostic and run it. After the test, review Event Viewer’s System log for a MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry. For recurring freezes, you can also inspect the System log around the incident for disk or storage, display-driver, WHEA hardware, service, or bug-check events. An “unexpected shutdown” entry may only record the forced power-off; it does not necessarily explain what caused the original freeze.

Check heat, free space, and recent hardware
Freezing under heavy use, unusually loud fans, or a very hot case can point to a cooling or ventilation problem. Check that vents are unobstructed and stop using the machine if it smells burnt, has suffered liquid damage, or becomes dangerously hot. Low free space, a failing drive, unstable memory, a graphics problem, or power trouble are other possibilities; a single freeze cannot identify which component is at fault. Microsoft’s guidance on unexpected restarts and blue-screen errors covers common areas such as drivers, software, hardware, and memory.

- Recent app or settings change: Consider System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Freeze began after a Windows update: Consider uninstalling the update through recovery options.
- Windows will not start: Try Startup Repair from WinRE.
- Windows remains unstable after diagnosis: Consider Reset this PC or a reinstall only after backing up important files if possible.
Reset this PC can offer Keep my files, but this does not keep installed applications or settings; back up first. Cloud download obtains a fresh Windows copy, while Local reinstall uses files already on the computer. A reset may keep the screen black for an extended time and restart more than once—do not interrupt it solely because it appears to pause. Microsoft explains the choices in its Windows recovery options and Reset this PC guidance.
When to stop troubleshooting and get help
Back up immediately and arrange qualified repair or data-recovery advice if the computer repeatedly freezes alongside drive clicking, disappearing files, or disk errors; overheats or shuts down under load; shows hardware error messages; or cannot boot even into recovery. Stop using it if there is a burning smell or liquid damage. Repeated forced shutdowns can increase the risk of data loss, and replacing a drive or memory without diagnostic evidence may not solve the problem.
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though menu labels differ. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; it no longer receives free security fixes or technical support through Windows Update. See Microsoft’s Startup Settings information.
