If MBCloudEA.exe.config is corrupt, do not uninstall Malwarebytes immediately. The Malwarebytes Endpoint Agent includes a documented recovery utility that can test the current configuration and restore the newest valid backup. Run it from an elevated Command Prompt, then verify that the agent starts and checks back into Nebula.
What the error means
MBCloudEA.exe is the Windows Malwarebytes Endpoint Agent executable. In a typical installation, it and its configuration file are located here:
C:Program FilesMalwarebytes Endpoint AgentMBCloudEA.exe
C:Program FilesMalwarebytes Endpoint AgentMBCloudEA.exe.configThe .config file controls how the agent operates and communicates with the managed Malwarebytes console. It is not the agent itself, and a damaged configuration file should not automatically be treated as malware. Verify the path, executable signature and installation before taking action.

Malwarebytes’ administrator guide documents that configuration corruption can prevent the Endpoint Agent service from starting, including after an unexpected power loss while the file was being written. The guide also describes backups and ConfigurationRecoveryTool.exe for restoring them (administrator guide).

Symptoms of configuration corruption
- The Malwarebytes Endpoint Agent service fails to start.
MBCloudEA.exeexits or repeatedly restarts.- Windows reports an invalid application configuration.
- Logs mention malformed XML, parsing failure or an inability to load application configuration.
- The endpoint stops checking in or disappears from Nebula after an abrupt shutdown, disk problem or interrupted software change.
These symptoms are not conclusive by themselves. A running agent that cannot reach Nebula may instead have a certificate, DNS, proxy, firewall, system-time or TLS-inspection problem.
Before repairing the file
- Record the endpoint name, group, assigned policy and last check-in time.
- Obtain local administrator rights.
- Back up the entire Endpoint Agent directory if the machine is business-critical.
- Do not delete, rename or overwrite the current configuration or its backups.
- If the endpoint is a server, schedule the work and any required reboot through change control.
Confirm the diagnosis
Check the installation path
Confirm that both files are beside each other in the expected Malwarebytes directory. If they are in a user-writable location or another unexpected directory, do not assume they are legitimate.
Check logs and Windows events
Review the Endpoint Agent log:
%ProgramData%Malwarebytes Endpoint AgentLogsEndpointAgent.txtAlso check Event Viewer for Application and Service Control Manager errors. Record the full path, file size, modification time and the digital-signature status of MBCloudEA.exe.

You may copy the configuration file to a protected location and inspect the copy with a text or XML-aware editor. Do not edit the original while the service is running, and do not disclose tokens, proxy credentials, identifiers or policy data.
Rule out certificate failure
An endpoint missing from Nebula is not necessarily suffering from configuration corruption. If the log contains:
System.Security.SecurityException: Issue with Authenticode signature Error:2148098053the issue points to outdated certificate trust. Malwarebytes recommends installing current Windows updates first, then redeploying or restarting the agent. See the official certificate troubleshooting guide.

Find the configuration backups
According to the Malwarebytes administrator guide, the agent creates up to five configuration backups in the same directory as the configuration file. The newest backup has the lowest numeric suffix. The exact filename pattern can vary by packaging or agent generation, so inspect the files on the affected endpoint rather than relying on a guessed filename.

Do not delete or rename the backups before attempting recovery. If the backups are stored elsewhere, the recovery tool can receive that directory as an optional second argument.
Run ConfigurationRecoveryTool.exe
The detailed recovery procedure comes from an older Malwarebytes administrator guide hosted as a PDF mirror. It is a documented managed-agent procedure, but administrators should first confirm that the utility exists in the installed agent version.
- Open Command Prompt by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Change to the actual Endpoint Agent installation directory.
- Run the recovery command.

The tool first tests the current configuration.
- The current configuration loads: the tool makes no replacement.
- The current configuration is corrupt and a valid backup exists: the tool replaces it with a valid backup, starting with the newest and trying older backups if necessary.
- No valid backup exists: restore a known-good copy from another approved location or proceed to a controlled reinstall.
Do not manually construct a new configuration file. It may omit required values, credentials or product-specific settings.
Restart the agent and verify Nebula
After recovery, start or restart the Endpoint Agent through Services or the appropriate managed procedure. If the installed version supports it, the current ThreatDown certificate guidance documents this elevated command:

"C:Program FilesMalwarebytes Endpoint AgentMBCloudEA.exe" -restartThis command is documented for certificate-related recovery, not as a replacement for ConfigurationRecoveryTool.exe when the configuration is corrupt.
Then:
- Confirm the Endpoint Agent service remains running.
- Allow time for the endpoint to check into Nebula.
- Confirm that its last-seen time, policy and protection status update.
- Review
EndpointAgent.txtfor new errors.
If the recovery tool is missing or fails
Search the actual installation directory first. The utility may be absent because the installed agent generation no longer includes it, the installation is incomplete, the endpoint uses a nondefault path, or security software removed or blocked it.
If no utility or valid backup is available, preserve the files and logs before cleanup. Contact ThreatDown/Malwarebytes support when the endpoint is a server, tamper protection is enabled, multiple endpoints are affected, or preserving identity and policy state is important.

Use the current Business Support Tool for Nebula and OneView only when recovery fails, the installation is broadly damaged or official support directs you to remove and redeploy the agent. It removes business products, files, settings and license information, so it is not the first-line fix for a recoverable configuration file.
Malwarebytes recommends first deleting or uninstalling the endpoint from Nebula or OneView when possible. Save work before running the tool; it may require two reboots.

Interference from another antivirus or endpoint-security product is possible, but it is not proof of the cause in a particular incident. Review quarantine and audit logs, then follow your security vendor’s allow-list process. Malwarebytes provides guidance for adding its folders and drivers to another product’s allow list (allow-list guidance).
Do not deploy broad exclusions globally. Confirm that the paths belong to the legitimate installation, use centrally managed rules and test on one endpoint first.
Separate local startup problems from connectivity problems

Firewall and application allow-list requirements are described in Malwarebytes’ firewall guidance. A repaired configuration file cannot fix blocked network traffic or an untrusted certificate.

Restore the configuration before reinstalling: back up the Endpoint Agent directory, run ConfigurationRecoveryTool.exe MBCloudEA.exe from an elevated prompt, and verify the service and Nebula check-in. Reserve the Business Support Tool for missing backups, failed recovery or a genuinely damaged installation.
