This message usually indicates a failed VPN connection, not a Remote Desktop problem. In many cases it is associated with VPN error 720, but the text is generic and can also accompany errors such as 619, 691, 812, or 809. Before changing protocols or reinstalling adapters, find the underlying RasClient error code and determine whether the problem is on your PC, network, VPN profile, or server.
First, confirm whether this is a VPN or Remote Desktop error
If the message appears under Settings > Network & Internet > VPN, follow the VPN troubleshooting steps below. The wording “remote computer” does not necessarily refer to Remote Desktop.
If it appears in mstsc.exe, the Remote Desktop Connection client, use separate RDP troubleshooting. Microsoft covers RDP services, ports, authentication, and Network Level Authentication in its Remote Desktop troubleshooting documentation.
Find the real error code first
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Find an event from RasClient, commonly Event ID 20227.
- Record the error number shown in the event details.
Microsoft documents this message in connection with VPN error 720, but do not assume that every instance is error 720. Microsoft’s VPN and dial-up error-code reference provides additional context.

The generic message alone does not prove that your password is wrong, the VPN server is offline, or that your network adapter is defective.
Try these low-risk checks first
1. Confirm ordinary internet access
Open a normal website. If the computer cannot reach the internet, repair the Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection before troubleshooting the VPN.
Optional checks in Command Prompt:
ipconfig /all
ping 1.1.1.1
nslookup vpn.example.comReplace the hostname in the last command with the actual VPN server address. A successful ping does not prove that the VPN will work because many VPN servers block ICMP while accepting VPN traffic.

Connect the computer to a phone hotspot or another trusted network and retry the VPN.

- Works on the hotspot: the original router, firewall, NAT, ISP, public Wi-Fi, or captive portal may be interfering.
- Fails on every network: investigate the profile, Windows network components, credentials, or VPN server.
- Other users also fail: suspect the server, address pool, certificate, authentication service, or server firewall.
On hotel, airport, or guest Wi-Fi, open a browser and complete the network’s sign-in page before starting the VPN.
3. Confirm the server address and account
Check with the VPN administrator that the server name has not changed and that your account is active, permitted for remote access, and not locked or expired.
Verify the Windows 10 VPN profile
- Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > VPN.
- Select the affected connection and choose Advanced options or Edit, depending on the Windows 10 build.
- Check the server name, VPN type, sign-in method, username format, and certificate or smart-card requirements.
When creating a native profile, Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > Network & Internet > VPN > Add a VPN connection, with Windows (built-in) selected as the VPN provider. See Microsoft’s Windows VPN setup instructions.
Do not choose Automatic, PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, SSTP, or IKEv2 at random. The VPN type and authentication method must match the remote server. Changing to PPTP may make a profile incompatible and can weaken security; it is not a universal fix.

Remove and recreate a damaged VPN profile
A stale profile can retain an incorrect server, protocol, authentication method, or certificate setting.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > VPN.
- Select the affected connection and choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Recreate the profile using the current settings supplied by your administrator or VPN provider.
Do not recreate a managed connection from memory if it requires a certificate, pre-shared key, domain username format, custom DNS suffix, split tunneling, or special routes.
Repair WAN Miniport components for error 720
Damaged or incorrectly installed WAN Miniport components are one possible cause of error 720. They are not the explanation for every instance of this message.

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Select View > Show hidden devices.
- Look for warning icons or missing WAN Miniport entries.
- If appropriate for your device and support process, uninstall the affected WAN Miniport device.
- Select the computer name at the top of Device Manager, then choose Action > Scan for hardware changes.
Windows should rediscover the component. Microsoft community troubleshooting and other technical reports describe this as a possible repair for native VPN failures, but it is not a guaranteed Microsoft fix. Record adapter names first and avoid uninstalling every network adapter indiscriminately; removing a physical Wi-Fi adapter can leave you disconnected until its driver is restored.

Use Network reset only as a last resort
Network reset can repair damaged Windows network configuration, but it removes installed network adapters and their settings.
- Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- Select Network reset.
- Choose Reset now and restart the PC.
- Recreate the VPN profile and reinstall or repair VPN software if necessary.
Microsoft describes Network reset as a last step. It may require Wi-Fi passwords again and can disrupt third-party VPN clients, Hyper-V virtual switches, Docker networking, custom routes, and other virtual adapters. See Microsoft’s Network reset guidance.

If several users or computers fail, client-side adapter repairs are unlikely to solve the underlying issue. The VPN administrator should check:
- Whether the VPN service is running and reachable.
- Whether the VPN address pool has available addresses.
- Whether the selected protocol and authentication method are enabled.
- Remote-access permissions, account status, time restrictions, and lockouts.
- NPS or RADIUS policies and authentication logs.
- Firewall, NAT, and VPN-port rules.
- Certificate validity and trust, where certificates are used.
- DNS servers and routes assigned after connection.
A connection that fails before credential validation points more toward reachability, protocol, adapter, or negotiation problems. A rejected username points toward authentication or account policy. If the VPN reports “connected” but internal websites or file shares remain inaccessible, investigate DNS, routes, split tunneling, and internal firewall rules instead.

After connecting, an administrator can inspect the assigned configuration with:
ipconfig /all
route print
nslookup internal-hostname.example.comWhat not to do
- Do not force PPTP unless the VPN administrator confirms that the server requires it. Do not weaken encryption or authentication simply to test a connection.
- Do not disable Windows Firewall or other security controls broadly. Any authorized test should be temporary and immediately reversed.
- Do not delete every network adapter without recording the configuration and ensuring that drivers are available.
- Do not install a consumer VPN to solve a corporate VPN problem. A subscription VPN does not provide access to company gateways, private DNS, file shares, or internal applications.
- Do not routinely disable IPv6, change registry values, or alter adapter bindings without administrator guidance.
Windows 10 support status
Standard Windows 10 Home and Pro support ended on October 14, 2025, and version 22H2 was the final general-release version for those editions. LTSC editions follow separate lifecycle dates. Troubleshooting may still restore the connection, but upgrading to a supported Windows release is preferable where possible. When to contact IT or the VPN provider
Escalate the issue when multiple users fail, the server or address pool may be unavailable, certificate or NPS errors appear, you lack administrator access, or the VPN connects but internal resources do not work. Provide the RasClient event number, the network on which the failure occurred, whether another user can connect, and whether the problem changes on a hotspot. That information is much more useful than repeatedly reinstalling adapters.
