A blank Chrome screen can come from one page, an extension, low available memory, a graphics-acceleration problem, or the site or network itself. First test the scope: open another site and try the affected page in a different browser. Then use the least disruptive fixes—reload, close tabs, restart Chrome and restart the device—before changing data or reinstalling.
First determine what is actually blank
“Blank Chrome screen” can describe a white Chrome window, one empty tab, or a single website that never renders. The distinction determines the safe next step. Google’s official help covers crashes, startup failures, and connection or loading errors rather than a separate universal blank-screen diagnosis, so treat each cause below as a possibility, not a certainty.
Check the scope in two minutes
- Open a different website in a new tab. If it loads, Chrome is running and the problem may be limited to the original page.
- Open the affected address in another browser. If it is blank there too, investigate the website, DNS, Wi-Fi, mobile data, or an outage before changing Chrome.
- If every tab is blank only in Chrome, continue with the Chrome-specific steps below.
When a page also fails in another browser, Google recommends restarting the modem or router when appropriate and contacting the website owner if the failure continues. Do not assume that reinstalling Chrome can repair a website-side or network-side failure.
Try the reversible fixes first
Reload and reduce memory pressure
- Reload the tab. A transient connection or script failure can leave a page unpainted.
- Close unused Chrome tabs and other applications. Google notes that low available memory can prevent a page from loading while other apps are open.
- Quit Chrome completely, reopen it, and load the page again.
- Restart the computer or phone if Chrome still shows a blank window.
These steps do not alter bookmarks, passwords, extensions, or site data. If the issue returns immediately after a restart, continue rather than repeatedly refreshing.

Use Incognito to test extensions (desktop)
Desktop Incognito is a quick isolation test because many extensions are not active there by default. Open the same address in an Incognito window.
- It works in Incognito: an extension or a setting tied to your normal profile may be interfering. Return to a normal window, open Chrome’s Extensions page, disable extensions, and turn them on one at a time. Reload after each change; the extension that makes the blank page return is the likely trigger.
- It is blank in both modes: extensions are less likely to explain the symptom. Move to the graphics, data, network, or installation checks below.
Incognito is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that every blank screen is extension-caused. Some sites also behave differently when cookies or sign-in state are absent.
Turn off hardware acceleration on desktop
Google’s desktop crash guidance says that “There could be a problem with how your computer’s hardware works with Chrome.” If Chrome’s rendering is the issue, test the setting rather than changing drivers or hardware first:
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu (More).
- Select Settings.
- Open System.
- Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Restart Chrome and revisit the page.
This setting is a desktop troubleshooting step from Google’s crash guidance; it is not a confirmed cause for every blank-screen case. If turning it off changes nothing, you can restore it later and proceed to the next branch.

Clear browsing data only after the easy checks
Corrupt or incompatible cached files, cookies, or site data can prevent one site from rendering. Use Chrome’s Delete browsing data control as a later step, after testing another browser and Incognito. Start with the smallest time range and categories that address the problem; deleting everything signs you out of sites and removes cached resources you may need to download again.
If only one domain is affected, clear data for that site rather than wiping the entire profile when Chrome offers that choice. Reopen the page after clearing and sign in again if required.
Reset Chrome settings when the profile is misconfigured
Resetting is more disruptive than clearing a single site’s data. Google says a reset changes selected defaults, disables or removes extensions, and clears cookies and site data, while saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed. Record any custom search engine, startup-page, permission, proxy, or extension choices you need before using the reset option in Chrome Settings.
Use reset only when the page loads in another browser, the reversible checks failed, and extension or profile configuration remains suspect. After the reset, test the page before reinstalling extensions so you do not immediately reintroduce the problem.

Reinstall Chrome if the installation itself is damaged
If Chrome remains blank across sites and profiles after the earlier checks, uninstall and install a fresh copy from Google’s official download page. A reinstall is appropriate after a failed update or damaged program files, but it will not fix a site that is also broken in other browsers.
Compatibility requirements change. Google’s current installation guidance lists Windows 10 or later for Intel processors, Windows 11 or later for ARM processors, macOS 13 Ventura or later, and supported 64-bit Linux distributions including Ubuntu 18.04 or later, Debian 10 or later, openSUSE 15.5 or later, and Fedora 39 or later. Check the live Google requirements page for your operating system before installing because these requirements are version-sensitive.
Android: use the mobile troubleshooting path
Android Chrome does not provide the desktop hardware-acceleration menu described above. Follow the mobile sequence instead:
- Confirm that Wi-Fi or mobile data works by opening another app or website.
- Update Chrome through the device’s app store, then restart Chrome.
- Open the page in an Incognito tab. A different result points toward saved site data, sign-in state, or another profile-specific condition.
- Clear Chrome’s browsing data, beginning with the affected site or a limited time range when possible.
- Close unused tabs and other apps to free device memory, then try again.
- Reinstall Chrome if the problem persists after the update, restart, and data-clearing steps.
If the same address fails in another Android browser, stop treating it as a Chrome-only problem and check the connection or contact the site owner.

Common failure points and precise fixes
The page is blank only after signing in
Test the address in Incognito. If it works there, saved cookies, site data, or an extension may be involved. Clear data for that domain, sign in again, and test before clearing the entire browser profile.
The blank screen returns after enabling an extension
Leave that extension disabled, check whether it has an update, and contact its developer if the problem is reproducible. Do not re-enable every extension at once; one-at-a-time testing preserves the evidence about which change mattered.
Restarting helps for a few minutes only
Close background applications and excess tabs to reduce memory pressure. If the symptom returns across unrelated sites, test hardware acceleration on desktop or follow the Android update-and-reinstall path rather than relying on repeated restarts.
Only one computer has the problem
Compare the same URL on another device or browser on the same network. A working comparison points toward the affected Chrome profile, extensions, graphics path, or installation; a failure everywhere points toward the site or connection.

You cannot open Chrome’s settings
First quit Chrome and restart the device. If Chrome still will not open, use the operating system’s uninstall control and reinstall from Google’s official download page, checking the current compatibility requirements for your platform.

When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing Chrome when the affected page fails in multiple browsers, devices, or networks; that pattern belongs with the site owner or network provider. Escalate to Chrome reset or reinstall when the failure is isolated to Chrome and survives restarts, Incognito testing, extension isolation, data clearing, and the desktop graphics check. This order preserves your profile where possible and gives each test a clear meaning.
