What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Try Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B first. Windows will reset the graphics driver; the screen may flicker or beep, then return. Save your work and restart if it does. If the monitor still says “No signal,” or the black screen appears before Windows starts, begin with cables, inputs and hardware—not the NVIDIA app.
NVIDIA has replaced GeForce Experience with the NVIDIA App. The older program is now legacy terminology, so apply these steps to the NVIDIA App unless a step specifically names an old GeForce Experience menu. NVIDIA urges remaining users to upgrade because legacy web services may be discontinued (NVIDIA’s upgrade notice).
Identify which black screen you have
| Symptom | Start here |
|---|---|
| No manufacturer logo, BIOS/UEFI image or signal | Check monitor input, cable, GPU port, one-monitor setup and hardware. |
| Logo appears, then Windows goes black | Use Safe Mode, driver rollback, clean installation or a clean boot. |
| Only the NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience window is blank | Restart its processes, then repair, reset or reinstall the app. |
| Screen turns black when pressing Alt + Z | Disable NVIDIA and competing overlays and capture tools. |
| Only a GeForce NOW game is black | Use the separate GeForce NOW troubleshooting guidance. |
A black screen alone does not prove that the GPU has failed. The failing layer may be Windows, the display driver, an overlay, the monitor connection or another component.
1. Reset the graphics driver
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft documents this as a first-line blank-screen recovery shortcut (Microsoft’s blank-screen guide).

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
- Expected result: a brief flicker and sometimes a beep.
- If the picture returns, save work and restart Windows.
- If nothing happens, continue; this shortcut can recover the display without fixing the underlying fault.
Check whether Windows is still responsive with Ctrl + Alt + Delete, Ctrl + Shift + Esc, Caps Lock or Num Lock. Audio or an already-configured remote connection can also indicate that only video output has failed.
2. Check the monitor and signal path
If the monitor reports “No signal,” shut down if necessary and work through this list:
- Turn the monitor on and manually select the HDMI or DisplayPort input in its controls.
- Reseat the video cable at both ends and try another known-good cable.
- Try another output on the graphics card.
- Disconnect every monitor except one.
- Test another monitor or television if available.
- If supported by your CPU and motherboard, test the motherboard video output separately.
NVIDIA recommends checking both ends of the cable, trying another display connection and reducing the system to one monitor (NVIDIA’s black-screen guidance). A high-resolution DisplayPort handshake, monitor firmware issue or older GPU can sometimes work over HDMI while DisplayPort fails. Treat HDMI as a diagnostic test, not proof that DisplayPort is universally defective.
3. Restart Windows and stuck NVIDIA processes
If the desktop is visible, close the NVIDIA App or legacy GeForce Experience, save your work and restart from Start. Do not repeatedly force power-off while a driver installer may still be working; one forced shutdown is a last resort for a completely frozen computer.

For a blank or unresponsive app window:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End the clearly identified NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience user-interface process.
- End a stuck NVIDIA overlay process only if it is plainly associated with the frozen interface.
- Reopen the app.
Do not indiscriminately terminate every NVIDIA service. Driver, laptop and recording features may depend on them.
4. Disable overlays and capture utilities
If the desktop is normal but a game goes black when you press Alt + Z, test the overlay layer before wiping the driver. Disable the NVIDIA Overlay, then test with Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, OBS hooks, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, RGB tools and other monitoring or tuning utilities disabled. Change one item at a time.
If the game remains visible after Alt + Z is disabled, the display driver may be healthy and the conflict may be overlay-, capture- or game-specific. NVIDIA’s current app includes overlay, recording, filters and performance statistics (feature overview).
5. Repair or reinstall the NVIDIA App
Use this path when Windows and games display normally but only the app is damaged:

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select NVIDIA App and open its advanced options, if shown.
- Choose Repair.
- If Repair fails, choose Reset, restart Windows and test again.
- If it is still blank, uninstall it and reinstall from the official NVIDIA App page.
Windows 10, Windows 11 and different app releases may use slightly different labels. App Reset does not repair a damaged display driver. If you still use GeForce Experience, migrating to the NVIDIA App is preferable to spending extensive time repairing the legacy installation.
6. Clean-install the NVIDIA driver
Choose this route when the black screen follows a driver update, games also lose video, Device Manager reports an adapter problem or the NVIDIA installer repeatedly fails.
- Download the exact driver for your GPU and Windows edition from NVIDIA’s GeForce driver page or its manual search/archive.
- Close browsers, games, video players, monitoring tools, GPU-tuning utilities and other 3D applications.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Select Custom (Advanced).
- Enable Perform a clean installation.
- Finish the installation and restart Windows.
NVIDIA notes that background applications and Windows Update activity can interfere with installation; reboot and allow pending updates to complete before retrying (NVIDIA’s clean-install procedure). A clean install can reset NVIDIA settings and profiles; it does not delete your games.
Game Ready or Studio?
NVIDIA positions Game Ready Drivers for gamers and new-game launch support, and Studio Drivers for tested creative-application workflows. Either can run games; neither is universally more stable. If the issue began after changing branches, testing the previously working branch is reasonable.

7. Roll back a driver that just caused the problem
When the previous driver worked and the symptom began immediately after an update:
- Press Windows + R, enter
devmgmt.mscand press Enter. - Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA GPU and choose Properties → Driver.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available, then restart.
If rollback is unavailable, obtain a known-compatible earlier package through NVIDIA’s official archive rather than a third-party mirror. An older driver may lack newer fixes, security updates or game support. NVIDIA also documents reinstall and rollback functions in its app, although labels can change (NVIDIA App features).

Safe Mode is appropriate when the display works before Windows but turns black after sign-in, or a driver installation left the normal desktop unusable. Follow Microsoft’s current route for your Windows version (Start Windows in Safe Mode). From there you can roll back or remove the display driver, uninstall the app, disable recent startup utilities or use System Restore.
For a post-logo conflict, NVIDIA recommends a clean boot:

Never disable Microsoft services before selecting the hide option. The Services console (services.msc) is for advanced installer diagnosis; do not disable services indiscriminately (NVIDIA installer troubleshooting).
9. Check laptop, Windows and hardware causes
- Laptop hybrid graphics may require the laptop maker’s driver rather than NVIDIA’s generic desktop package.
- Test one monitor with standard refresh rate and HDR temporarily off; also test without G-SYNC or FreeSync.
- Check GPU power connectors, overheating, unstable overclocks and power-supply behavior.
- Consider a Windows Update, BIOS, motherboard, monitor or GPU change immediately preceding the failure.
- Microsoft lists stalled processes, output misconfiguration, incompatible drivers and incomplete updates among blank-screen causes (blank-screen troubleshooting).
- NVIDIA notes that CPU, memory, motherboard, storage or system-memory faults can resemble a graphics-card failure (hardware troubleshooting).
Stop software troubleshooting and contact the PC, GPU, laptop, motherboard or monitor manufacturer when there is no BIOS/UEFI image, multiple known-good displays and cables fail, artifacts or overheating appear, the system powers off under load, the GPU is not detected after a clean install, or the problem persists in Safe Mode or another operating system.
What not to do first
- Do not change TDR registry values as a routine fix; Microsoft describes the recovery mechanism, but extending its timeout can mask instability (TDR documentation).
- Do not assume the newest driver is the answer; choose normal update, rollback or clean installation based on when the failure began.
- Do not make Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) the default step. It is an advanced fallback with additional Safe Mode risk, not a requirement for ordinary driver problems.
- Do not buy software or hardware before isolating whether the fault is the app, overlay, signal path or computer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GeForce Experience discontinued?
NVIDIA has replaced it with the NVIDIA App and urges remaining users to upgrade. “Legacy” or “being replaced” is more accurate than claiming it is universally impossible to install.
Why does Alt + Z make the screen black?
The NVIDIA Overlay or a competing overlay/capture utility may conflict with the game, fullscreen mode, HDR or variable refresh. Disable overlays one at a time before reinstalling the driver.
Should I use DDU?
Only as an advanced fallback after normal rollback, clean installation and Safe Mode steps fail. It is not required for every NVIDIA driver problem.
Does a clean driver installation delete games?
No. It can reset NVIDIA graphics settings and custom profiles, but it does not remove installed games.
Can a black screen mean the GPU is dead?
Not by itself. A cable, monitor input, driver, power, memory, motherboard or software conflict can produce the same symptom.
