There are two places to check: Steam’s Remote Storage page for cloud data associated with your account, and your Steam installation’s userdata folder for the local cloud cache. The game’s playable save may be somewhere else, such as Documents or AppData, because each game decides which files Steam Cloud synchronizes.
First, confirm that the game uses Steam Cloud
Open the game’s Steam store page and look for the Steam Cloud feature. You can also check the game’s Library entry: right-click the game, choose Properties → General, and look for its cloud-synchronization setting. In the Steam client, check the global setting under Steam → Settings → Cloud. Menu wording may vary by client version or language.
Cloud can be disabled globally or for an individual game. And support does not guarantee that every save slot or game setting is included: developers choose which files Steam Cloud manages. A game may use Steam Cloud for some data while keeping progress elsewhere. Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation describes the configured files as the ones synchronized between computers.

View your account’s cloud files online
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns or plays the game.
- Open Steam Remote Storage.
- Find the game and inspect the cloud data Steam lists for it.
This is the starting point for checking the server-side copy. The page’s available information and actions can vary, so do not assume every game presents its saves as conveniently downloadable files.

Find Steam’s local cloud cache
The local cache is normally inside userdata in the Steam client’s installation folder. Use the path for your operating system; if Steam was installed somewhere custom, look in that installation instead.
| Platform | Default folder | How to open it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
Open File Explorer and enter the path. You can also try %PROGRAMFILES(X86)%Steamuserdata if Steam is in its default location. |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder and enter the path. |
| Linux / SteamOS | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Open the path in your file manager. If it is absent, check where your Steam client is installed. |
These default locations are listed in Steam Support’s cloud troubleshooting guidance. The game itself may be installed on another drive or in another library; that does not necessarily change which Steam client installation owns userdata.

Choose the right account folder and game AppID
Inside userdata, the usual pattern is:
[Steam install folder]userdata[Steam account ID][Game AppID]
There may be several numeric account folders if different Steam accounts have used the computer. Check which account is signed in and compare folder modification dates, but do not edit or delete anything until you have identified the right account. The account ID is not the game’s AppID.
The AppID is the numeric identifier in a Steam store URL. For example, in https://store.steampowered.com/app/570/Dota_2/, the AppID is 570. Open that numbered folder under the correct account folder. It may contain a remote directory, remotecache.vdf, or other Steam Cloud files and metadata; its exact contents differ by game.

Find the game’s actual playable save
The userdata[account ID][AppID] folder is Steam’s local cloud-management area, not a guaranteed location for the file the game loads. Developers configure cloud file patterns and roots, so the active save can be outside Steam’s client directory. Valve lists roots that include the game installation directory and common user folders.
- Windows: check
%USERPROFILE%Documents,%USERPROFILE%Saved Games, and%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocal,LocalLow, orRoaming. - macOS: check
~/Documents,~/Library/Application Support, and the user’s home folder. - Linux: check the home folder and
$XDG_DATA_HOME. - Any platform: check the game’s own installation directory or a game-specific location described by its developer.
Search for the game title or publisher name, recently modified files, and common extensions such as .sav, .save, .dat, .bin, or .json. These are search clues, not a complete list: extensions vary, and some saves have none.

Use remotecache.vdf as a clue
If the AppID folder contains remotecache.vdf but no recognizable save, copy the file first, then inspect the copy with a text editor. It may show filenames or paths associated with cloud-managed files, but it is metadata—not necessarily the save itself—and should not be edited casually. Players have reported using it to identify paths when saves live in Documents or AppData; treat that as a diagnostic clue, not a guaranteed map. Community discussion of remotecache.vdf
Restore or transfer a save without overwriting the wrong version
For a normal move to another computer
- Confirm Steam Cloud is enabled globally and for the game, and sign in to the same Steam account on both devices.
- Connect the source device to the internet, close the game completely, and wait for Steam to finish syncing.
- Start Steam on the destination device and let synchronization finish before launching the game.
- Launch the game and check that the expected progress appears before removing any separate copies.
Steam generally synchronizes configured files before and after a game session. Cross-platform transfer is not automatic for every title: the developer’s cloud configuration may keep operating-system-specific files separate, and some games use their own account or servers for progress.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
For a manual restore
- Close the game and Steam.
- Copy both the game’s actual local save folder and the relevant
userdata[account ID][AppID]folder to a separate backup location. - Identify which file is the save the game actually reads; it may be in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, the game folder, or another location.
- Copy the intended save into that game-specific location, keeping the backup intact.
- Open Steam and handle any sync prompt by choosing the version that matches the save you deliberately restored. Then launch the game and verify the progress.
- Keep the backup until you have confirmed the restored save works.
Do not delete the whole userdata folder or remove remote or remotecache.vdf as a first fix. You could erase the only remaining copy or make it harder to tell which version is current.
Resolve a Steam Cloud conflict
A conflict means Steam sees different local and cloud versions; it does not know which one represents the progress you want. Offline play can delay synchronization until a device reconnects, which may leave conflicting versions. Steam Support warns about this possibility in its cloud troubleshooting guidance.
- Stop and avoid repeatedly launching the game.
- Copy the local save and the relevant AppID cache folder somewhere safe before choosing an option.
- Compare Steam’s timestamps with when you last played on each device. If you can, inspect the saves in-game or compare their file dates and contents.
- Choose the local or cloud version that corresponds to the progress you intend to keep; neither is always the right choice.
- Launch the game, verify the result, and retain your backup until the save is confirmed.
Diagnose a save that will not sync
- Confirm you are using the correct Steam account and that cloud sync is enabled globally and for the game.
- Check that the source device is online and that Steam has finished syncing after the game closes.
- Look at the Remote Storage page, then inspect the correct account and AppID folders in
userdata. - Search the game’s actual save locations; an empty-looking AppID folder does not prove that the game has no local save.
- Inspect Steam’s cloud log for sync activity or errors. The log locations are
[Steam install folder]logscloud_log.txton Windows,~/Library/Application Support/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txton macOS, and~/.local/share/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txton Linux. - If the game uses a publisher account or its own server-side saves, consult that game’s support information; Steam Cloud may not control that progress.
cloud_log.txt is diagnostic evidence about transfers and failures, not a readable inventory of every current save. Steam Cloud is synchronization rather than a dependable version-history backup: a bad or empty save can propagate. Keep periodic independent copies of important saves.
