On a computer, open Chrome’s Downloads page, select the file’s menu, then choose Show in folder (Windows, Linux, or Chromebook) or Show in Finder (Mac). You can go straight to the page by entering chrome://downloads/ in Chrome’s address bar. On a phone or tablet, open Chrome’s More → Downloads; use the device’s Files app to find saved files.
Find downloads on a computer
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot More menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Downloads. You can also enter
chrome://downloads/in the address bar, or press Ctrl + J on Windows or Linux. - Select a file to open it. To reveal its location, open the file’s options and select Show in folder or Show in Finder, depending on your computer.
Chrome’s download indicator near the address bar may appear for a recent or active download, but it is not always visible. The More → Downloads route works when the indicator is absent. On a Mac, use that menu route rather than relying on a keyboard shortcut, which can vary with version and keyboard configuration. Google’s Chrome download instructions describe the menu and file-location action.
Find downloads on Android
- Open Chrome and tap More → Downloads.
- Tap a file to open it. For file actions, use the menu beside the item; available actions include sharing, renaming, or deleting.
- To browse files stored on the device, open the Files app.
If Chrome’s address bar is at the bottom of the screen, swipe up on it to reach the menu. The exact storage location can vary by device and storage setup, so the Files app is a more reliable guide than assuming one universal folder. Find downloads on iPhone or iPad
- Open Chrome and tap More → Downloads.
- Touch and hold a file name to copy, share, or remove it.
- To browse a file you saved, open Apple’s Files app and check the location you selected, such as On My iPhone, On My iPad, or iCloud Drive.
When saving a new file, choose Save… → Files and pick a location. Merely opening a file in another app is not the same as saving it to Files; a temporarily opened file may not remain available after the Chrome window closes. See Google’s iPhone and iPad download instructions.

Where Chrome saves downloads by default
These are typical desktop defaults if you have not changed Chrome’s setting. They are not guaranteed locations: you may have selected another folder or chosen a destination for an individual download.

Check or change Chrome’s download location
- In Chrome on a computer, select More → Settings → Downloads.
- Check the location shown. Select Change beside it to choose a different folder.
- To choose a destination separately for each file, turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading.
- Fixed folder: Simple when you always check the same place.
- Ask each time: Useful for organizing files into different folders, but you will need to remember the location chosen for each download.
On phones and tablets, use Chrome’s Downloads page and the device’s Files app; the desktop Settings path and folder picker do not apply in the same way. Google’s download settings guidance explains desktop location controls.
If a download appears in Chrome but you cannot find the file
- Open Chrome’s Downloads page and locate the entry. On a computer, use Show in folder or Show in Finder.
- If that action does not locate it, check More → Settings → Downloads for the current folder.
- Search the device for the exact file name. If you do not know it, search by file type or extension and approximate date.
- Check likely alternate destinations, including Desktop, Documents, OneDrive, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, and any connected external drive.
- Look at the entry’s status in Chrome. A failed, paused, canceled, or blocked item may not be a complete saved file.
- If the original file was moved or deleted, Chrome’s history entry may remain even though the file is no longer at that location. Download it again from the original site if it is still available.
Also check that you are using the Chrome profile that started the download. A viewed PDF or image may have opened in Chrome without being saved as a download. On iPhone or iPad, check the selected Files location rather than expecting every opened item to be in a permanent Downloads folder.

If the download did not finish
Chrome may label an item Failed, Paused, Canceled, or Blocked, or report a network, permission, or storage problem. For a paused item, resume it if Chrome offers that option. For a network failure, check the connection and try again; if only one website’s downloads fail, the site may need to resolve the problem. If the destination is full, unavailable, read-only, or restricted, free space or choose a folder you can write to. Google’s download troubleshooting guidance covers failed and blocked downloads.
Do not bypass a warning automatically. Chrome can block files it considers dangerous or unwanted. Keep a blocked file only if you trust both the source and the file; be especially cautious with executable files such as .exe, .dll, or .bat. If you do not trust it, discard it. When opening a file is not downloading it
A PDF or image displayed in a browser tab may only be open for viewing, not saved in your download location. For an open PDF, use the viewer’s Download button. On desktop, you can also right-click a PDF link and choose Save link as. On Android, open the PDF menu and select Download where available; on iPhone or iPad, use Save… → Files. For Android PDF steps, see Google’s PDF instructions. Some websites or content owners do not offer a download action for particular media.

Other cases to check
- Incognito: Files you downloaded remain on the device after the Incognito session ends. Delete the files yourself if you do not want them left there. Google’s Incognito guidance explains what remains.
- Files opening automatically: Chrome can automatically open some file types after download. From the recent-download menu, turn off Always open files of this type if you do not want that behavior. Google’s download instructions describe this option.
- Managed computer: If the folder is locked or keeps reverting, ask your work or school administrator whether a download-directory policy is in effect.
