To find your Windows computer name, open Settings > System > About and read Device name under Device specifications. For the quickest keyboard-based check, open Command Prompt and run hostname.
Find your computer name in Settings
The Settings route works in Windows 11 and Windows 10:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings. You can also right-click Start and choose Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Under Device specifications, find Device name. That is the name most people mean when they ask for your computer name.
The layout can look a little different between Windows versions, but the route is the same. Microsoft’s Windows device information guide identifies the Device name on this About page for both Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Faster search option: Press the Windows key, type About your PC or System, and open the matching Settings result. Then look for Device name. You can also press Windows + R, enter ms-settings:about, and press Enter; this optional Settings shortcut works on supported installations.

Use Command Prompt if Settings is unavailable
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Open it, type
hostname, and press Enter.
The output is the PC’s local host name, which generally corresponds to its Device name. Two other ways to display the Windows computer-name environment value are:
echo %COMPUTERNAME%To see the name alongside other system details, run systeminfo and look for Host Name. That command returns much more information than needed if you only want the name.

Use PowerShell or Windows Terminal
Open Start, search for PowerShell or Windows Terminal, and run:

$env:COMPUTERNAMEThis is a direct, simple option for PowerShell and scripts. The more technical alternative [System.Net.Dns]::GetHostName() also returns the local host name. On Windows 11 22H2 and later, Command Prompt and PowerShell may appear inside Windows Terminal; the console app hosting the shell does not change the commands. Check the name in System Properties
The classic System Properties window is useful if you also need to inspect a domain or workgroup:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
sysdm.cpland press Enter. - Open the Computer Name tab and read the Computer name or Full computer name field.
This is a legacy interface; Settings is the simpler current route for just looking up the device name. To see broader hardware and software details, run msinfo32 to open System Information, or use systeminfo from Command Prompt.

Computer name, username, model, and IP address are different
These labels identify different things. If someone asks for your “computer name,” they usually want the Device name shown in Settings or the local name returned by hostname.

A computer name is not an IP address, and providing one does not guarantee another device can find or connect to the PC. Name lookup depends on the network, DNS or other name-resolution setup, VPN, firewall, and permissions. Microsoft describes the computer name as a way to identify a computer on a network in its computer-name guidance.

If the name does not work on your network
First confirm the local value in Settings or with hostname. If it is correct but another device cannot reach the PC, the name and the network connection are separate issues. Check that both computers are connected to the intended network, the target PC is awake and online, and the person connecting has the required permissions. Network discovery, file sharing, firewall rules, guest Wi-Fi isolation, a VPN, or a work domain’s DNS and access policies can also affect whether the name resolves or a service is reachable.
If the computer was recently renamed, restart it if prompted and try again. On a work- or school-managed PC, ask IT about connection problems or domain settings rather than changing them yourself. Report the exact label and where you found it—for example, “Device name in Settings” or “Host Name from systeminfo”—if a support technician sees a different value.
Rename the PC only if you mean to change it
Finding the name does not require changing it. If you deliberately need a different name, open Settings > System > About, select Rename this PC, enter the new name, select Next, and choose Restart now or Restart later. Microsoft documents these steps for renaming a Windows device.

Simple letters, numbers, and hyphens are practical for compatibility across network and older systems. Follow your organization’s naming policy on a managed device; renaming or domain-related changes may require administrator approval. A device name is not a password, but it can reveal information about a person, department, organization, or inventory scheme.
Windows 10 still runs, but standard support ended on October 14, 2025. That date does not change the steps above; it means Windows 10 no longer receives standard free support, updates, or security fixes through Windows Update.
