The quickest way to identify a WordPress theme is to inspect the page source for /wp-content/themes/, note the theme folder in a loaded stylesheet URL, and then open that theme’s style.css to read its header. If you administer the site, confirm the answer in Appearance > Themes or Tools > Site Health > Info > Active theme. Public-source detection is useful, but it can be defeated by custom names, child themes, CDNs and stripped metadata.

Choose the method that matches your access

Method Access needed What it proves Main limitation
View Source or developer tools Any public page Finds a likely theme folder from loaded asset URLs The folder may be renamed, rewritten or unrelated to the marketed theme name
Read the theme’s style.css Public access to the file Shows WordPress header metadata such as Theme Name and Template Comments may be removed, and block themes may keep much of their design elsewhere
Appearance > Themes Administrator or equivalent dashboard access Shows the installed active theme directly Unavailable when you do not control the site
Tools > Site Health > Info > Active theme Administrator or equivalent dashboard access Reports name, version, author, author website and parent theme Only available inside that WordPress installation

Find a likely theme from public source code

  1. Open a page on the site in your browser.
  2. Choose View Source from the browser menu, or open developer tools and inspect the page’s HTML and Network requests.
  3. Use Find to search for /wp-content/themes/.
  4. Record the folder immediately after that path. For example, an asset such as /wp-content/themes/example-theme/assets/main.css points to example-theme.
  5. Check more than one stylesheet or script URL. A plugin, cached file or an old asset can leave a misleading path, while the active theme’s files may be loaded conditionally.

This folder name is a lead, not confirmation. It may be a developer’s internal name, a customized copy or a child theme rather than the parent theme shown in a marketplace.

Confirm the name in the theme’s style.css header

For a classic theme, open the theme-root stylesheet by changing the path to the folder’s style.css, if the server allows it. WordPress requires a root-level style.css for classic themes and reads its opening header comment to identify the theme.

A typical header contains fields such as:

/*
Theme Name: Example Theme
Version: 2.4.1
Author: Example Studio
Author URI: https://example.com
Template: example-parent
*/

Theme Name is the human-readable label. Version, Author and Author URI help verify that the file belongs to the expected theme. Template identifies the parent theme when the stylesheet belongs to a child theme.

Tell a child theme from its parent

A child theme is active when its own stylesheet supplies the front-end identity while its Template value points to a parent theme. Report both names rather than naming only the parent:

  • Active theme: the child stylesheet and its Theme Name.
  • Parent theme: the value in the child’s Template header.

WordPress’s theme functions use “stylesheet” for the current front-end theme and “template” for the parent reference. The same distinction appears in REST API theme data: stylesheet is the active theme identifier and template is the parent reference. A detector that reports only the parent is therefore incomplete.

Use the WordPress dashboard when you administer the site

Appearance > Themes

Sign in and open Appearance > Themes. The theme marked Active is the theme WordPress is using. Open its details to review the displayed name and version.

Tools > Site Health > Info > Active theme

For a more complete record, open Tools > Site Health > Info, expand Active theme, and read the reported name, version, author, author website and parent theme. Site Health also lists the locations of the WordPress, uploads, themes and plugins directories. Hosting layouts differ, but the themes directory is commonly under public_html/wp-content/themes/.

Recognize block themes

If the dashboard shows Appearance > Editor, the site usually uses a block theme. If it shows Appearance > Customize, it usually uses a classic theme. This is a practical interface clue, not a substitute for checking the active theme.

Block themes can place templates, styles and settings in theme.json and the Site Editor, so a visible stylesheet may not contain the design you see. Confirm the active theme in the dashboard or Site Health when possible; use public source inspection only as supporting evidence.

Why theme detectors disagree

Custom or renamed themes

Agencies often rename a theme folder, remove marketplace branding or build a private theme. A descriptive visual match or a detector label cannot establish the original product.

CDNs, caches and rewritten URLs

A cache or content-delivery network can rewrite asset URLs, serve files from another host or omit the original path. Compare several assets and look for WordPress metadata before drawing a conclusion.

Page builders and plugins

The theme supplies the site framework, but a page builder, block patterns and plugins may create most of the visible layout. Identifying the theme does not identify those components.

No public evidence

If source code contains no usable theme path and the stylesheet metadata is unavailable, say that the theme could not be confirmed. Do not guess from colors, typography or visual similarity.

A reliable reporting format

When you publish or document your finding, include the evidence level:

  • Confirmed from dashboard: name and version shown in Themes or Site Health.
  • Confirmed from metadata: Theme Name read from the accessible style.css header.
  • Probable from source: folder inferred from /wp-content/themes/, with no readable header.
  • Unconfirmed: no reliable public evidence.

For a child theme, write “Active theme: [child]; parent theme: [parent].” This prevents the common error of presenting the parent as the theme actually running on the site.
