On Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. The value beside Edition is the installed edition, such as Windows 11 Home or Windows 10 Pro. That same section lists the Windows version and OS build.
Find the edition in Settings
- Open Settings by pressing Windows + I, or right-click Start and select Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Scroll to Windows specifications and read the value beside Edition.
You may see a label such as Windows 11 Home, Windows 11 Pro, Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro, or Windows 11 Home Single Language. Microsoft documents this About-page route for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s guide to Windows device information
Use the edition currently displayed in Windows rather than relying on a laptop sticker, box, wallpaper, or original purchase record. A PC may have been upgraded, reinstalled, or restored since it was sold.
Use winver for a quick version and build check
- Press Windows + R to open Run.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Read the About Windows dialog for the Windows release, version, and build information.
You can also search for winver from Start or the taskbar. It is a quick fallback when Settings is inconvenient or unavailable, but use the About page when you need the clearest explicit Edition field. Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant instructions

Use System Information for a fuller diagnostic report
- Open Start or taskbar search and type
msinfo32. - Open System Information and review System Summary.
System Information gathers details about hardware, system components, and the software environment, including manufacturer and model, processor, firmware, memory, system type, Windows directory, and boot device. It is useful when a technician needs more than the edition; it is not the simplest way to answer the edition question. Know which Windows details you are reading
Windows uses several labels that answer different questions. On the About page, Windows specifications and Device specifications cover different kinds of information.
- Edition: The product tier or feature set, such as Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education.
- Version: The Windows release or feature-update designation.
- OS build: A more precise identifier for the installed Windows build.
- System type: Whether the installed operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit, and related platform information such as ARM-based Windows. Check Device specifications on the About page.
- Activation status: Whether Windows is activated; it does not identify or change the installed edition.
- S mode: A restricted mode associated with an edition, not simply another edition name.
For example, “Windows 11” alone does not tell a support technician whether the PC has Home or Pro, nor does it identify the build or system type. For software compatibility, check more than the edition. Microsoft’s guide to Windows device information

Open Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Activation. The About page tells you what edition is installed; Activation tells you whether it is activated.
A mismatch between the installed edition and the edition covered by a product key or digital license can cause activation errors. Repeatedly entering the same key may not solve an edition mismatch; check the installed edition and follow Microsoft’s activation guidance or use the Activation troubleshooter. Recognize special editions and configurations
Home Single Language
If the Edition field says Home Single Language, include the full name when reporting your edition. This edition supports one display language and restricts installing additional language packs. Microsoft’s Windows language-support guidance

Home in S mode
S mode may be described as Windows 11 Home in S mode. Microsoft says Windows 11 in S mode is available only with Home; it restricts app installation primarily to Microsoft Store apps and requires Microsoft Edge for browsing. Enterprise, Education, and managed PCs
An Enterprise or Education edition may be managed by a workplace or school. If activation or licensing is in question, contact the organization’s IT administrator before changing edition or activation settings. If the About page shows an edition different from your receipt or license, first treat the displayed edition as the one currently installed. A previous upgrade, reinstall, recovery process, product key, or license stored in device firmware can affect which edition Setup installs. Check the edition and activation status separately; if a product key or license appears to correspond to a different edition, use Microsoft’s installation and upgrade guidance rather than guessing which key to enter. If Windows will not boot, Settings and winver may not be available. The installed edition can require an offline system inspection or help from a technician; purchase records and manufacturer recovery information may help, but a device label does not prove which edition is currently installed.
What to send a support technician
When someone is troubleshooting compatibility, drivers, or activation, provide the relevant fields together. Find edition, version, build, and system type in Settings; add activation status only if licensing is part of the problem.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. The operating system can continue to run, but identifying its edition does not establish whether the PC is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11; check compatibility separately. Microsoft’s Windows device information page
