macOS saves screenshots to the current user’s Desktop by default. In Python, build that location without hard-coding a username:
from pathlib import Path
screenshot_dir = Path.home() / "Desktop"
print(screenshot_dir)
This is the default candidate folder, not proof that Screenshot is still configured to use it. The Screenshot app can save to another location, copy captures to the clipboard, or leave a capture in its floating thumbnail workflow.
Get the default screenshot folder in Python
Path.home() resolves the home directory of the account running Python. Appending Desktop produces the conventional macOS Desktop path, such as /Users/your-name/Desktop, without embedding a machine-specific username.
from pathlib import Path
screenshot_dir = Path.home() / "Desktop"
print(f"Default screenshot folder: {screenshot_dir}")
The expression is portable Python: pathlib.Path represents filesystem paths using the conventions of the operating system. It does not ask the Screenshot app which destination is selected; it simply constructs the location macOS uses by default.

Check that the folder is available
from pathlib import Path
screenshot_dir = Path.home() / "Desktop"
if screenshot_dir.is_dir():
print(f"Scanning {screenshot_dir}")
else:
print(f"Not a directory: {screenshot_dir}")
is_dir() avoids attempting to enumerate a missing or non-directory path. A script can also use exists() when it needs to distinguish a missing path from another filesystem object.
Find likely screenshot files
Apple’s documented default filename resembles “Screen Shot [date] at [time]”. Do not depend on that text alone: filenames can be renamed, language and formatting can differ, and users may save captures through other workflows. Filtering by common image suffixes is a safer starting point.
from pathlib import Path
screenshot_dir = Path.home() / "Desktop"
image_suffixes = {".png", ".heic", ".jpg", ".jpeg", ".webp"}
if not screenshot_dir.is_dir():
raise FileNotFoundError(f"Desktop folder not found: {screenshot_dir}")
for path in sorted(screenshot_dir.iterdir()):
if path.is_file() and path.suffix.lower() in image_suffixes:
print(path)
The suffix set is illustrative rather than exhaustive. On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot can use PNG for SDR or HEIF for HDR, depending on the selected capture option. Other capture and save tools may produce different formats.

Match Apple’s usual name as an additional clue
from pathlib import Path
screenshot_dir = Path.home() / "Desktop"
for path in screenshot_dir.iterdir():
if path.is_file() and path.name.startswith("Screen Shot"):
print(path)
Use a name check only as a secondary filter. Combining it with suffix and modification-time checks can help in a controlled workflow, but none of those tests proves that a file came from Screenshot.
Confirm whether macOS still uses Desktop
Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot, choose Options, and inspect the Save to destination. Apple’s interface lets you select another folder. If a different folder is selected, Path.home() / "Desktop" remains a valid default path but is the wrong place to search for new captures.
Rank #2
macOS does not provide a documented, supported Python standard-library call that reads Screenshot’s current “Save to” choice. Your program therefore has two honest options:
- Ask the user to confirm the destination in Screenshot’s Options menu and pass that folder to the script.
- Search the default Desktop only when the user has confirmed that the default setting is active.
A user-selected path can be supplied explicitly:
from pathlib import Path
folder_text = input("Screenshot folder: ").strip()
screenshot_dir = Path(folder_text).expanduser()
if not screenshot_dir.is_dir():
raise NotADirectoryError(screenshot_dir)
for path in screenshot_dir.iterdir():
if path.is_file():
print(path)
expanduser() allows an input such as ~/Pictures/Screenshots. This approach records the user’s actual setting without pretending that Python discovered it automatically.

Know which captures will not appear in the folder
| Capture situation | What your Desktop scan finds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Default file save to Desktop | Likely image file, if it has not been moved or renamed | Enumerate Desktop and filter files |
| Save destination changed in Options | Nothing new in Desktop | Check Shift-Command-5 → Options → Save to |
| Copy to Clipboard | No file | Read the clipboard through an appropriate macOS automation or paste workflow |
| Floating thumbnail still visible | File may not yet be in the expected folder | Open or drag the thumbnail, then scan the chosen destination |
| File dragged or manually moved | Original location no longer contains it | Search the destination where it was moved |
A filesystem search cannot find every screenshot because some captures are copied to the clipboard instead of saved as files. Likewise, a floating thumbnail can be acted on before a permanent file is placed where your script expects.
Build a reusable finder
This function checks the default candidate, accepts common image formats, and returns newest files first. It does not claim to identify screenshots with certainty.
from pathlib import Path
from typing import Iterable
IMAGE_SUFFIXES = {".png", ".heic", ".jpg", ".jpeg", ".webp"}
def screenshot_candidates(folder: Path | None = None) -> Iterable[Path]:
directory = folder or (Path.home() / "Desktop")
if not directory.is_dir():
return []
files = (
path for path in directory.iterdir()
if path.is_file() and path.suffix.lower() in IMAGE_SUFFIXES
)
return sorted(files, key=lambda path: path.stat().st_mtime, reverse=True)
for file_path in screenshot_candidates():
print(file_path)
On Python versions before the union-type syntax used above, replace Path | None with Optional[Path] and import Optional from typing. Directory iteration and metadata access can raise permission or transient filesystem errors, so production code should catch the specific exceptions it can recover from.
Limit results to recent captures
from datetime import datetime, timedelta
from pathlib import Path
folder = Path.home() / "Desktop"
cutoff = datetime.now().timestamp() - timedelta(minutes=10).total_seconds()
for path in folder.iterdir():
if path.is_file() and path.suffix.lower() in {".png", ".heic"}:
if path.stat().st_mtime >= cutoff:
print(path)
Modification time is useful for a “what was just created?” workflow, but it is not a capture timestamp: copying or editing a file can change it.

The script prints Desktop, but the screenshot is elsewhere
Open Screenshot with Shift-Command-5 and inspect Options → Save to. The setting may have been customized. Update the script’s folder argument or ask the user to restore Desktop.
The directory exists but no images are listed
Check whether the capture went to the clipboard, remains in the floating thumbnail, was dragged away, or uses a suffix outside your filter. Temporarily print every file in the directory, then broaden the suffix set.
FileNotFoundError or NotADirectoryError
The constructed path is not a usable directory for this account. Verify Path.home(), confirm the Desktop exists, and test the user-supplied destination with is_dir() before iterating.
Permission errors occur
macOS privacy controls can restrict access to user data. Run the script as the intended logged-in user and grant your terminal or Python host the required Files and Folders or Full Disk Access permission through System Settings when macOS requests it. Do not silently ignore permission exceptions; report the path and the denied operation.
The filename does not start with “Screen Shot”
That prefix describes Apple’s usual default naming, not a guaranteed identifier. Prefer suffix, directory, and recency checks, and allow renamed files.
Performance and reliability considerations
For a normal Desktop, one iterdir() pass is inexpensive and avoids recursively scanning the entire home directory. If a folder can contain thousands of files, filter as you iterate and call stat() only for candidates. Avoid assuming that the newest file is always the newest screenshot; another application may have written it.
For automation, capture a baseline list before triggering Screenshot, then compare it with a later list. This reduces false positives from older images:
from pathlib import Path
folder = Path.home() / "Desktop"
before = set(folder.iterdir())
# Trigger or wait for the capture outside this example.
after = set(folder.iterdir())
new_paths = sorted(after - before)
for path in new_paths:
print(path)
There is still a race if the file is being written. Check the file size twice with a short delay before opening it, and handle a file that disappears because the user moved it.
