Mac screenshots normally save to the Desktop. If yours is missing, press Shift-Command-5, open Options, and check the selected save destination. If you held Control while taking it, the image may have gone to the Clipboard instead of becoming a file.
Where screenshots are saved on a Mac
When you take a screenshot with a keyboard shortcut, macOS saves it to the Desktop by default. The destination can be changed in Screenshot’s Options menu, so the Desktop is the first place to look, not a guarantee that every capture is there.
Screenshot files generally have a name beginning with “Screenshot” or “Screen Shot” and include the date and time. Apple describes the usual screenshot format as PNG. On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot options can also offer HDR (HEIF), so a search limited to PNG files may miss a capture saved in HEIF.
Find a missing screenshot step by step
- Look on the Desktop. Check for files named “Screenshot” or “Screen Shot,” then sort or scan by date and time to find the one that matches when you captured it. If you normally keep the Desktop clear, check its contents in Finder as well as on the screen; files can be obscured by open windows or Desktop settings.
- Check the selected save destination. Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot controls, then select Options. Look at the selected location. If it is a folder other than Desktop, open that folder and look for the file there. The same controls let you change the destination for future captures.
- Search by name and date. In Finder, search this Mac for “Screenshot” and inspect results around the time you took the image. If you remember the capture date, use Finder’s available search filters to narrow the results by date or kind. Include HEIF as well as PNG if you selected HDR on a supported macOS Tahoe 26-or-later Mac.
- Check whether the image was copied instead of saved. If you held Control with a screenshot shortcut, macOS puts the capture on the Clipboard rather than saving a file to the normal destination. Open an app or document where an image can be pasted and press Command-V. If the image appears, save it from that app to a folder of your choice.
- Check the capture thumbnail. When the floating thumbnail appears in a screen corner, click it to open or edit the capture. You can also drag it directly into a folder or document. If you are still interacting with the thumbnail, finish that action and allow the configured save operation to complete before deciding that the file is missing.
Shortcut reference: what each capture does

The shortcut determines what part of the screen is captured; the selected destination determines where a saved file goes. Adding Control changes the workflow to Clipboard instead of an ordinary saved file.

Change where future screenshots are saved
- Press Shift-Command-5. If the shortcut is unavailable, open Applications > Utilities and launch Screenshot.
- Choose Options in the Screenshot controls.
- Select the save destination you want from the available choices. Choose a folder you can find again, particularly if you are troubleshooting missing captures.
- Take a test screenshot and check that destination. This confirms where future captures are going; it does not move screenshots saved earlier to another location.
You can also use the Options menu to control whether the floating thumbnail is shown. The thumbnail is a temporary way to open, edit, drag, or otherwise handle a fresh capture; it is distinct from the save destination. If you drag the thumbnail into a document or folder, look in that destination rather than assuming the image was placed on the Desktop.
Why a screenshot may not appear as a PNG file
It went to the Clipboard
A screenshot made while holding Control is copied rather than saved to the usual destination. Paste it promptly into an image-capable app or document and save it as a file. The Clipboard is not a durable folder: if you have copied something else since the capture, the old image may no longer be available there.

It was saved as HEIF
On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, the Screenshot options can offer SDR (PNG) or HDR (HEIF). If you searched only for files ending in .png, widen the search to include HEIF images and check the chosen destination. This option is not established for every Mac or macOS version, so use the formats actually shown in your Screenshot controls.

A recording is a video, not a screenshot image. Apple identifies screen recordings by the “Screen Recording” filename prefix and the .mov file extension. Search for that name if you used Screenshot’s recording controls rather than one of the still-image shortcuts.

The app prevented capture
Some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows. If no image was created, changing the save location will not solve the problem. Try capturing a different window or an unobstructed part of the screen to distinguish an app restriction from a destination issue.
Troubleshooting by symptom
