Start with the IC manufacturer’s own list of authorized distributors, then confirm that the seller is authorized for the specific product line and your region. Authorized-channel sourcing is usually the safest default for genuine parts, traceability, warranty, and recourse. If that channel cannot meet your need, an independent distributor may be appropriate—but only after you verify provenance and apply inspection controls suited to the part’s risk and intended use.
What makes an IC distributor reliable?
Reliability is more than a familiar name or a stock figure on a product page. It means the seller can supply the exact part you specified, substantiate where it came from, state who backs the warranty, and meet your delivery and documentation requirements.
- Manufacturer-authorized or franchised distributor: Has a formal distribution agreement with the component manufacturer. “Franchised” is commonly used for authorized distribution.
- Independent distributor or broker: Buys and resells parts outside the manufacturer’s ordinary authorized distribution agreement. Independent sellers are not automatically selling counterfeit parts, but provenance, handling history, warranty, and authenticity generally require more scrutiny.
- Gray-market supplier: Offers parts outside the manufacturer-authorized channel. A part may be genuine, but its source, storage, warranty, or handling may be harder to establish.
- Marketplace listing: May be operated by a third-party seller rather than the marketplace itself. Qualify the actual seller and fulfillment source, not just the platform.
Authorization is the strongest starting filter, not a guarantee that every order detail is correct. Check the full part number, suffix, quantity, packaging, date or lot information, and terms.
Why begin with authorized distribution?
Manufacturer-authorized distribution generally provides stronger authenticity assurance, traceability, manufacturer documentation, and warranty coverage than open-market sourcing. It can also make it easier to obtain product-change notifications, lifecycle information, compliance documents, and support if a shipment is nonconforming. Texas Instruments says buying through its authorized semiconductor distributors is the way to obtain genuine parts, full warranty coverage, and after-sales support (TI’s authorized-distributor guidance). DigiKey describes authorized purchases as providing manufacturer-authorized product and factory warranty (DigiKey’s explanation).

These benefits matter especially for production, safety-related designs, and regulated or audited programs. The seller’s general reputation is not proof of authorization for a particular manufacturer, product line, geography, or sales channel. Verify that relationship for the IC you need.
How to verify authorization
- Identify the manufacturer. Use the datasheet, approved-part record, bill of materials, or component marking to confirm who makes the IC.
- Open the manufacturer’s official distributor page. Look for labels such as “Where to buy,” “Authorized distributors,” “Sales network,” or “Channel partners.” Examples include Micron’s authorized-distributor page, Infineon’s Where to buy page, onsemi’s Americas distributor network, Diodes Incorporated’s U.S. distributor listings, and KYOCERA AVX’s authorized-distributor list.
- Check the scope, not just the company name. Confirm the manufacturer, product family, country or region, and whether the authorization covers the seller’s online channel. Check whether the stock is current production, obsolete inventory, or excess inventory; these categories may have different warranty arrangements.
- Ask the manufacturer when anything is unclear. Send the manufacturer’s sales or channel team the seller’s legal name, website, product family, and your country. Ask: “Is [distributor legal name and website] authorized for [manufacturer] and the [product family] in [country]?” A seller-provided certificate alone is not enough; ERAI has documented false authorization claims and fake distribution letters (ERAI’s report).
- Match the seller’s identity across documents. The quotation, invoice, website, payment beneficiary, physical address, returns address, and customer-service details should identify a consistent legal business. Investigate newly created domains, mismatched payment recipients, refusal to issue a formal quotation, or pressure to use an irreversible payment method.
Which type of distributor fits the purchase?

Commonly used authorized sources include DigiKey, Mouser, Arrow Electronics, Avnet, Newark/Farnell/element14, RS, and Future Electronics. This is not a universal endorsement or a substitute for checking the manufacturer’s current list in your region.
Catalog and engineering purchases
DigiKey and Mouser are examples of catalog-first options for prototypes, samples, repairs, and smaller orders. Mouser says it is an authorized distributor for more than 1,200 manufacturer brands, receives products directly from factories, serves businesses and consumers, and has no minimum order for products normally stocked in its warehouse; these are Mouser’s own statements, not independent audit findings (Mouser company information; Mouser new-customer information). For complex or larger programs, an account-based distributor may be better suited to allocation, BOM support, and supply planning.
Production and design-in support
Arrow provides a manufacturer directory to identify supported lines (Arrow’s manufacturer directory). Avnet and other large distributors may fit production sourcing and supply planning, while manufacturer-direct contact can make sense for strategic programs. Confirm the relationship for the particular part family rather than inferring it from a distributor’s size.

Legacy and discontinued parts
Rochester Electronics is a specialist to consider for certain obsolete or discontinued devices. Authorization and warranty depend on the manufacturer and product line. Infineon, for example, lists Rochester as fully authorized for certain overstock and discontinued products, while stating that Rochester—not Infineon—provides the reliability warranty for those products (Infineon’s Where to buy page). Confirm who warrants the exact part being quoted.
What to compare besides price
Exact part and technical fit
Compare the complete manufacturer part number, including every suffix and package code. Check temperature grade, qualification status, speed or memory density, packing format (tape-and-reel, tray, tube, or cut tape), moisture-sensitivity requirements, and applicable compliance needs. A near-equivalent is not interchangeable without engineering approval. Confirm the required revision, approved alternates, and any environmental, export-control, or documentation requirements before quoting.
Availability and continuity
Ask what the stock label means. “In stock” may mean physically held by the distributor, while other listings may represent factory stock, an estimate, allocation, supplier-confirmed inventory, backorder, or marketplace stock. Get the quantity physically available, its location, and a delivery date with its status—confirmed, guaranteed, or estimated. For production, also compare minimum order quantity, order multiples, forecast requirements, allocation exposure, last-time-buy risk, product-change notices, end-of-life support, and warehouse region.
Landed cost and terms
Prices change with quantity, region, currency, tax, shipping, and supply conditions. Compare quotations for the same part condition, quantity, delivery date, shipping method, and tax treatment. Include freight, duties, currency conversion, payment terms, minimum order value, cancellation rights, restocking fees, return conditions, warranty, and liability limits. A low unit price may not be the lowest-cost choice once inspection, failure risk, rework, delay, returns, or a production stoppage are considered.

Technical and account support
For a complex design or recurring program, ask whether the distributor offers field application engineering, design-in assistance, samples, BOM support, lifecycle information, supply agreements, forecast programs, or local account management. A catalog page may be enough for an isolated repair; a production program may need a named contact and a continuity plan.
Qualify the requirement before requesting quotes
Create a sourcing record so suppliers quote the same requirement. Include:
- Manufacturer and exact part number, including suffix
- Quantity, intended use (prototype, pilot, production, or repair), and required delivery date
- Acceptable date-code range, if any
- Package and packing format
- Environmental, regulatory, and compliance requirements
- Required certificates and traceability level
- Whether alternate parts are permitted and who can approve them
- Consequence of failure and required incoming-inspection level
Questions to ask before placing an order
Send the supplier a written questionnaire and retain the response with the quote and purchase order:

- What is the exact manufacturer part number and suffix, and is any substitution proposed?
- Are the parts new and unused, refurbished, reclaimed, or otherwise processed?
- Where is the inventory physically located, and how many pieces are physically available?
- What are the date code, lot code, and country of origin, if available or required?
- What is the inventory’s original source, and what traceability can you provide?
- Can you supply a certificate of conformance, and who issues it?
- What warranty applies, and who provides it?
- What are the return, cancellation, and failure-analysis terms?
- What inspection or testing has been performed? If a laboratory tested the parts, which laboratory did the work?
- What counterfeit-control procedures and quality certifications do you maintain?
- Can you provide relevant references, and what happens if the shipment fails our incoming inspection?
- Is the delivery date confirmed or estimated? Are duties, freight, and taxes included?
A quote that says only “equivalent IC available” does not establish that the specified component will be delivered. Require the exact manufacturer part number and all approved substitutions in writing.

How to qualify an independent distributor
Use an independent source only when authorized supply cannot meet the requirement or a documented business case justifies the added risk. ECIA’s distributor audit checklist emphasizes written distribution agreements, authorization verification, supplier registers, traceability to the manufacturer or an authorized distributor, and retention of certificates of conformance where applicable (ECIA distributor audit checklist). Ask the seller for evidence appropriate to your use:
- Quality-management certification and written counterfeit-part control plan
- Supplier-approval and receiving-inspection procedures
- Traceability records and certificate-of-conformance details
- Testing capability, laboratory qualifications, and any part-specific inspection or test report
- Warranty terms, product-liability insurance, and nonconformance/return process
- References for comparable components or industries and a record-retention policy
- Storage and handling history, including relevant moisture-sensitive-device controls
Screen the seller and part using manufacturer confirmation, internal approved-vendor records, previous nonconformance history, customer references, and trade or sanctions checks where required. ERAI offers part-risk, company-screening, alert, and reporting tools (ERAI; ERAI risk-mitigation tools; ERAI reporting and alerts). ERAI advertises a one-time free report; broader database or alert services may require membership or subscription. An absence of an alert is not proof that a supplier or part is genuine, and a membership, audit, or standards-based process cannot authenticate every individual component. Authorized-channel receipts
Match the delivery against the purchase order and packing list. Check part number, quantity, manufacturer labels, packaging, date and lot information, moisture-sensitivity and handling labels, visible damage, and the promised certificate or warranty documents. Record the result in the receiving or approved-vendor system.

Set an inspection and test plan before purchase, not after a questionable shipment arrives. Depending on risk, controls may include high-resolution marking review, package and dimensional comparison, date- and lot-code analysis, X-ray, decapsulation, solderability testing, electrical testing, curve tracing, die inspection, or examination for solvent resistance and remarking. Use an appropriately qualified laboratory for work beyond internal capability.

Visual inspection can identify anomalies but cannot prove die authenticity, electrical compliance, or storage history. Match testing to the application: a visual check may be proportionate for a low-cost hobby repair, but it is not an adequate control by itself for safety-critical production.
Red flags that should stop or escalate a purchase
- The seller claims authorization that cannot be confirmed with the manufacturer.
- The seller will not identify the actual seller, inventory source, or part condition.
- Required lot or date-code information, traceability, or storage history is unavailable.
- The price is implausibly low without a verifiable explanation, or the seller pressures you to bypass normal controls.
- Photos, labels, legal names, or documents conflict with one another.
- Payment must go to an unrelated entity, or a formal quotation is refused.
- The seller refuses inspection or independent testing for a high-risk part.
- Terms provide no meaningful remedy for a high-risk component.
- A different suffix, package, or part is substituted without engineering approval.
A markedly lower price is a reason to investigate, not proof of counterfeiting. It may reflect old date codes, excess stock, a different region or currency, opened packaging, a different packing quantity, reclaimed material, or excluded freight and tax. Require evidence that resolves the discrepancy before approval.
What to do when authorized stock is unavailable
- Ask the manufacturer about allocation, an authorized alternate source, or an approved alternate part.
- Check other authorized distributors in the relevant region and ask whether the displayed quantity is physically verified.
- Review engineering options such as redesign, a last-time buy, or a form-fit-function alternative; obtain the required approval before substitution.
- If an independent source is still necessary, document the reason, verify provenance and warranty, and define inspection and test acceptance criteria before issuing the purchase order.
- For a legacy requirement, ask whether inventory is manufacturer-authorized legacy stock, newly manufactured under license, refurbished, reclaimed, or tested aftermarket stock; identify the warranty issuer and approve a sample before production release where appropriate.
Do not assume that an “available” listing represents unconstrained, physically verified stock. For long-lived products, compare validated inventory against expected demand and the cost of redesign or emulation.
A practical supplier scorecard

These weights are a starting model, not a certification or industry standard. For regulated, safety-critical, or long-life products, give more weight to traceability, counterfeit controls, quality records, warranty, and continuity. Do not let a low price offset failed authorization or missing provenance.
Keep supplier controls in the buying process
For production purchasing, connect distributor qualification to the approved-vendor list, purchase-order requirements, receiving inspection, nonconformance handling, traceability records, change control, and supplier requalification. Retain the authorization evidence, quote, part and lot records, inspection results, and warranty terms with the procurement record. Recheck authorization when the manufacturer, product line, region, channel, or supplier relationship changes.
